The purpose of this study was to analyze the levels of white blood cells and profile of proinflammatory Th1, Th2, Th17, and T regulatory tissue cytokines in the tonsils of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and cervical adenitis (PFAPA) patients to contribute to the pathophysiological understanding of the PFAPA syndrome. A cohort of PFAPA patients who had tonsillectomy during 2010 and 2011 was included and compared to control patients who had tonsillectomy for tonsillar hypertrophy. White blood cell counts were measured during flares in PFAPA patients and before tonsillectomy in

Atlanto-axial fixed subluxation (Grisel's syndrome) is an uncommon complication of upper neck inflammatory processes and head and neck surgery. We present the case of a 6 year old patient who developed a Grisel's syndrome after an upper respiratory infection. X-rays and CT scans demonstrated a fixed C1 and C2 subluxation which was treated with reposition and application of a Halofixateur. We give a review of the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this rare syndrome.

Fifteen children with nontuberculous mycobacterial adenitis of the head and neck underwent surgical treatment between July 1991 and July 1994. Fine-needle aspiration for biopsy and culture allowed early diagnosis in nine children. Positive cultures grew Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex in 12 children and M. chelonei in one child. Total excision was performed in 10 cases with combinations of lymphadenectomy and salivary gland excision. Curettage was used to successfully treat five children. One patient required local flap coverage for primary wound repair. Two patients required more t

Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) is a lentivirus with genetic relatedness to the human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV-1 and HIV-2). It induces a fatal syndrome in rhesus monkeys that closely parallels the clinical course of AIDS in humans. The authors used double-labeling immunohistochemical procedures on rhesus lymph node and spleen taken during different time periods after SIV infection to localize the p27 gag protein to specific cellular immunophenotypes. In animals with follicular hyperplasia, viral protein was found associated predominantly with follicular dendritic cells. Many of these

Computed tomography of 31 patients with infections of the face and neck was reviewed and correlated with the clinical and surgical results. Computed tomography was found to be valuable for (a) distinguishing cellulitis from abscess, (b) defining the precise location and extent of complex infections, (c) demonstrating secondary complications, and (d) occasionally suggesting the etiology of infection. Based on this review, we concluded that CT provides important diagnostic information that aids clinical assessment and guides medical and surgical management of cervical infections. The anatomic re

Cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis, or scrofula, may be the first manifestation of previously undiagnosed advanced HIV, even when concurrent miliary pulmonary tuberculosis produces few or no respiratory symptoms. A 25-year-old male immigrant from Eastern Europe presented with one to two weeks of progressive right cervical and jaw swelling, fever, night sweats, fatigue, and anorexia, without cough, dyspnea, or chest pain. Neck and chest computed tomography demonstrated necrotic bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy, supraclavicular and paratracheal adenopathy, and diffuse miliary pulmonary nodular

BACKGROUND: The Sydney System for reporting lymph node cytopathology standardizes lymph node fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) reporting and improves risk-based clinical stratification. Validation data from tuberculosis (TB)-endemic regions remain limited.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational multicentric study analyzed 427 consecutive lymph node FNAC cases from two tertiary care centers in Eastern India during January-December 2025. Three independent pathologists, reviewing slides at separate time points, categorized aspirates according to the Sydney System (L1-L5), b

BACKGROUND: Despite tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL) being the most prevalent type of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, there are limitations in laboratory diagnosis of TBL due to high cost, inadequate diagnostic efficacy and feasibility. Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) assay is a design-locked, molecular diagnostic technique that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) genome and rifampicin resistance by targeting rpoB gene and mutations within the gene. Currently, there is limited evidence validating Xpert assay usage for diagnosing TBL in Bangladesh. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated diagnostic effic

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of innate lymphoid cell type 2 (ILC2s) on the function of regulatory T cells (Treg) and CD8+ T cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) through IL-9.
METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were collected from CLL patients (n = 52) and healthy controls (n = 30). ILC2 proportions and IL-9 levels were assessed using flow cytometry and ELISA. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to stain GATA3, CRTH2, and IL-9 in cervical lymph nodes from CLL patients (n = 10) and control subjects with reactive lymphadenitis (n = 10). Correlation analysis between I

Paratuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP infection of ruminants triggers progressive wasting disease characterized by granulomatous lymphadenitis, enteritis, and severe intestinal pathology that often requires early culling of the animal. The resulting economic burden is significant, and MAP exposure in the workplace constitutes a significant zoonotic risk. Although it has been established that the MAP propagates within resident immune cells, less is known about how it traverses the epithelium. It is currently

BACKGROUND: Protothecosis is a rare infectious disease caused by unicellular, achlorophyllous, microalgae of the genus Prototheca, ubiquitously distributed in nature. The algae are emerging pathogens, whose incidence is increasing in both human and animal populations and serious systemic infections related to this pathogen have been increasingly described in humans in recent years. After mastitis in dairy cows, canine protothecosis is the second most prevalent form of the protothecal disease in animals. Here, we report the first case of chronic cutaneous protothecosis due to P. wickerhamii in

Deficiency of adenosine deaminase 2 (DADA2) is a rare systemic autoinflammatory disease, typically with autosomal recessive inheritance, usually caused by biallelic loss of function mutations in the ADA2 gene. The phenotypic spectrum is broad, generally including fever, early-onset vasculitis, stroke, and hematologic dysfunction. Heterozygous carriers may show related signs and symptoms, usually milder and at an older age. Here we describe the case of two relatives, the proband and his mother, bearing an ADA2 homozygous pathogenic variant, and a heterozygous son. The proband was a 17-year-old

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, benign, self-limited syndrome characterized by tender lymphadenopathy and low-grade fever. It may also present with rash, arthritis, fatigue, and splenomegaly. Data on the disease is limited, and its etiology remains largely unknown. Here, we present the case of a 30-year-old female with a medical history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), previously treated with etanercept, type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM-1), and Hashimoto's hypothyroidism; she was brought in to an emergency department (ED) in Houston after a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and loss of consc
