Adaptation to Low Temperature Exposure Increases Metabolic Rates Independently of Growth Rates.

Metabolic cold adaptation is a pattern where ectotherms from cold, high-latitude, or -altitude habitats have higher metabolic rates than ectotherms from warmer habitats. When found, metabolic cold adaptation is often attributed to countergradient selection, wherein short, cool growing seasons select for a compensatory increase in growth rates and development times of ectotherms. Yet, ectotherms in high-latitude and -altitude environments face many challenges in addition to thermal and time constraints on lifecycles. In addition to short, cool growing seasons, high-latitude and - altitude envir

The change of attention network functions and physiological adaptation during high-altitude hypoxia and reoxygenation.

Previous studies have not reached a definitive conclusion regarding the effect of high-altitude hypoxia and reoxygenation on attention. To clarify the influence of altitude and exposure time on attention and the relations between physiological activity and attention, we conducted a longitudinal study to track attention network functions in 26 college students. The scores on the attention network test and physiological data, including heart rate, percutaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), blood pressure, and vital capacity in pulmonary function measurement, were collected at five time-poin

Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) physiological response to novel thermal and hypoxic conditions at high elevations.

Many species have not tracked their thermal niches upslope as predicted by climate change, potentially because higher elevations are associated with abiotic challenges beyond temperature. To better predict whether organisms can continue to move upslope with rising temperatures, we need to understand their physiological performance when subjected to novel high-elevation conditions. Here, we captured Anna's hummingbirds - a species expanding their elevational distribution in concordance with rising temperatures - from across their current elevational distribution and tested their physiological r

Glomerular filtration rate estimates decrease during high altitude expedition but increase with Lake Louise acute mountain sickness scores.

AIM: Acute mountain sickness (AMS) can result in pulmonary and cerebral oedema with overperfusion of microvascular beds, elevated hydrostatic capillary pressure, capillary leakage and consequent oedema as pathogenetic mechanisms. Data on changes in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at altitudes above 5000 m are very limited. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy mountaineers, who were randomized to two acclimatization protocols, undertook an expedition on Muztagh Ata Mountain (7549 m) in China. Tests were performed at five altitudes: Zurich pre-expedition (PE, 450 m), base camp (BC, 4497 m), Camp 1 (C1

Long-term modulation of inward currents in O2 chemoreceptors by chronic hypoxia and cyclic AMP in vitro.

In mammals, ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia is associated with an enhanced chemosensitivity of the O2-sensing carotid body, resulting in an increased respiratory drive. To test whether this sensitization involves long-term modulation of ion channel function in endogenous O2 chemoreceptors, i.e., type 1 cells, we exposed cultures of dissociated rat carotid body to chronic hypoxia (6% O2) for 1-2 weeks, before monitoring the electrophysiological properties of type 1 cells using whole-cell, perforated patch recording. Chronic hypoxia augmented voltage-dependent inward Na+ and Ca2+ currents

Acclimation to moderate hypoxia improves acute hypoxia tolerance of diploid and triploid brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis.

Triploid salmonids are used in aquaculture and stocking programs for recreational fishing because they are reproductively sterile and therefore cannot breed in the wild. However, they appear to be more sensitive than diploids to environmental stressors. The objective of this study was to develop a better understanding of the hypoxia tolerance of triploids. We compared the acute hypoxia tolerance of sibling diploid and triploid brook charr that were acclimated to either moderate hypoxia (65 % of air saturation) or normoxia (98 % air saturation). Fish then underwent acute hypoxia trials, by slow

Adaptation of coastal defence structure as a mechanism to alleviate coastal erosion in monsoon dominated coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The complexity of the coastal environment and the advent of climate change cause coastal erosion, which is incontrovertibly a significant concern worldwide, including Peninsular Malaysia, where, the coast is threatened by severe erosion linked to anthropogenic factors and monsoonal wind-driven waves. Consequently, the Malaysian government implemented a mitigation plan using several coastal defence systems to overcome the coastal erosion problem. This study assesses coastal erosion management strategies along a monsoon-dominated coasts by evaluating the efficacy of coastal protection structures

Assessing diagnostic certainty for scurvy and rickets in human skeletal remains.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying scurvy and rickets has important implications for understanding adaptations and variability among past communities, and bioarchaeologists now regularly evaluate these conditions. Due to the increased number of studies, cases with less clear-cut lesions and variable preservation are now frequently reported. Despite an improved understanding of the biological mechanisms for disease expression, there is a lack of consensus on the language used to express diagnostic certainty, limiting comparability. This article aims to address these issues and provide recommendations on m

The neurocircuitry of fasting-induced glucocorticoid release.

Activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) axis confers adaptations to homeostatic perturbations including food scarcity. A comprehensive new study by Douglass et al. disentangled how agouti-related peptide (AgRP)-expressing neurons of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) trigger rapid HPA-axis activation in response to fasting, which is mediated by repression of a tonic, inhibitory neuro circuit.

Limb bone strains during climbing in green iguanas (Iguana iguana): testing biomechanical release as a mechanism promoting morphological transitions in arboreal vertebrates.

Across vertebrate diversity, limb bone morphology is typically expected to reflect differences in the habitats and functional tasks that species utilize. Arboreal vertebrates are often recognized to have longer limbs than terrestrial relatives, a feature thought to help extend the reach of limbs across gaps between branches. Among terrestrial vertebrates, longer limbs can experience greater bending moments that might expose bones to a greater risk of failure. However, changes in habitat or behavior can impose changes in the forces that bones experience. If locomotion imposed lower loads in tre

Scaling the invisible wall: Molecular acclimation of a salinity-tolerant diatom to freshwater.

In aquatic ecosystems, marine and freshwater environments are separated by steep salinity gradients. The osmotic stress induced by this 'invisible wall' forms an insurmountable barrier for many aquatic lifeforms, including bacteria, algae and animals. Because the osmotic differences when transiting a salinity divide are so hard to overcome, most species have adapted exclusively to a marine or a freshwater lifestyle. A major consequence of this physiological specialization into marine and freshwater organisms is that transitions are relatively rare, impeding regular contact and colonization. Wh

Effectiveness of sanitization protocols in removing or reducing parasites from vegetables: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic contamination in vegetables is a reality in several countries and a challenge for food safety. The risk of consumption usually raw, associated with failures in good practices of production, transportation, and preparation further increase the possibility of ingesting contaminated food. Given this, a systematic review was carried out to scientifically demonstrate the effectiveness of sanitization protocols in the parasitic decontamination of plants. METHODS: This review was conducted following the guidelines of the Cochrane Manual, being registered in the PROSPERO protoco

The Brain at High Altitude: From Molecular Signaling to Cognitive Performance.

The brain requires over one-fifth of the total body oxygen demand for normal functioning. At high altitude (HA), the lower atmospheric oxygen pressure inevitably challenges the brain, affecting voluntary spatial attention, cognitive processing, and attention speed after short-term, long-term, or lifespan exposure. Molecular responses to HA are controlled mainly by hypoxia-inducible factors. This review aims to summarize the cellular, metabolic, and functional alterations in the brain at HA with a focus on the role of hypoxia-inducible factors in controlling the hypoxic ventilatory response, ne

Different patterns of chronic hypoxia lead to hierarchical adaptive mechanisms in goldfish metabolism.

Some hypoxia-tolerant species, such as goldfish, experience intermittent and severe hypoxia in their natural habitat, causing them to develop multiple physiological adaptations. However, in fish, the metabolic impact of regular hypoxic exposure on swimming performance in normoxia is less well understood. Therefore, we experimentally tested whether chronic exposure to constant (30 days at 10% air saturation) or intermittent hypoxia (3 h in normoxia and 21 h in hypoxia, 5 days a week) would result in similar metabolic and swimming performance benefits after reoxygenation. Moreover, half of the n

Revisiting geographic variation in melanism of monarch butterfly larvae in North America using iNaturalist photos.

Monarch butterflies in North America have an exceptionally large breeding distribution, occupying regions west of the Rocky Mountains and throughout the eastern seaboard. An experimental study conducted 17 years ago and published in this journal appeared to show that western monarch larvae tend to have smaller black stripes than those from eastern parents, which at the time was thought to be an adaptation to higher solar exposure in California. Here, we revisit this question by measuring melanism of eastern and western larvae from online photographs submitted to iNaturalist by members of the p
