Obesity and health-related quality of life among immigrant Meskhetian Turks in Turkey: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major determinant of health-related quality of life, affecting both physical and mental well-being. Meskhetian Turks, due to their migration history, face specific socioeconomic (low income, limited healthcare and education access) and cultural challenges (acculturation stress, dietary changes, social exclusion) that may increase obesity risk and adversely affect health-related quality of life. METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of obesity and health-related quality of life among immigrant Meskhetian Turks residing in Ahlat District,

Use of the Spanish English Neuropsychological Assessment Scale in older adult Latines and those at risk for autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The Spanish English Neuropsychological Assessment Scale (SENAS) is a cognitive battery with English and Spanish versions for use with persons for whom either language is predominant. Few studies have examined its utility outside the normative sample. The current study examined SENAS performance in samples of older adult Latines and Latines with or at risk for autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease (ADAD) mutations. METHOD: The SENAS was administered to 202 older adults from the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study (LALES) and 29 adults with (carriers) or without (non-carriers) mutations ca

The relationship between discrimination, alcohol use severity, and PTSD symptoms among Latinx heavy drinkers.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is linked to alcohol use severity among Latinx adults, who also show high prevalence rates of PTSD compared to non-Latinx adults. We know little about whether PTSD symptoms affects the relationship between discrimination and alcohol use severity. We hypothesized that the association between discrimination and alcohol use severity might differ by level of PTSD symptom severity. METHODS: This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis of data collected at baseline from a completed randomized clinical trial testing the relative efficacy of a culturally adapted motivatio

"It's a Complicated Web": An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Cameroonian and Nigerian Clergy Understanding of Intimate Partner Violence.

Clergy's understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) underpins the support they provide to Christian women affected by IPV. However, the understanding of intimate partner violence by Cameroonian and Nigerian clergy living in England is unknown. This article explores their understanding of intimate partner violence through remote nine semi-structured interviews. The results showed that clergy understood that the intersection of individual, Christian, and cultural beliefs around marriage and acculturation factors causes intimate partner violence. They acknowledged a lack of adequate knowled

Sleep paralysis in African Americans with panic disorder.

Studies have reported a wide range in lifetime prevalence of sleep paralysis (SP). This variation may stem from cultural factors, stressful life events and genetic differences in studied populations. We found that recurrent SP was more common among African-American participants, especially those with panic disorder. Recurrent SP was reported by 59% of African Americans with panic disorder, 7% of whites with panic disorder, 23% of African-American community volunteers and 6% of white community volunteers. Significantly more early life stressors were reported by African Americans than whites. Hi

Changes in first year medical students' attitudes and perceptions toward cultural diversity: a pilot study in Korea.

PURPOSE: Cultural diversity (CD) education in undergraduate medical training has gained increasing attention as patient populations become more diverse. This pilot study examined preliminary changes in first-year medical students' attitudes and perceptions toward CD following a single structured session informed by Dogra's (2005) perspective on CD education at a Korean medical school. METHODS: A single-group pre-post design was employed with 85 first-year medical students during the 2023-2024 academic year. A 14-item questionnaire, drawn from Panthi and his colleagues and reclassified by the

A Dynamic and Inclusive Approach.

After a year of transition to a new publisher, Creative Nursing 2024 will build on our legacy of nurturing novice authors with a Student Article of the Year initiative; presenting courageous discourse as reflected in our overarching theme for the year, The Impact of Social Forces on Nursing and Health; and publishing even more new knowledge in the form of research and discussion of nursing theories and models. This issue's theme, Activism, Advocacy, and Allyship, is exemplified by articles about paths to a nursing workforce that reflect the people we serve, and about concepts such as hygge, di

Do Hispanic Girls Develop Eating Disorders? A Critical Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders have become increasingly prevalent in North America. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder were previously thought to solely affect Caucasian women. However, contemporary research has studied the occurrence of this phenomenon in ethnic minority women, such as Latinas. METHODS: This article presents a critical review of 12 quantitative, prospective psychological research studies from the past 17 years. RESULTS: The authors in the reviewed literature identified bodily dissatisfaction, environmental influences, and acculturation as significa

Homicide victimization in California: an Asian and non-Asian comparison.

Previous literature has not specified the contextual differences that adequately explain Asian Americans' underinvolvement in homicide. This study examines the social contexts within which homicide takes place. Homicide data from 1991 to 1999 in California are analyzed, and the results show that, compared to other groups, Asian homicide victims are more likely to be killed by family members, to be female, and to be married. Results of a negative binomial regression analysis also show that an acculturation factor that weakens the institution of family tends to affect general homicide more for A

Similar and different precursors to drug use and delinquency among African Americans and Puerto Ricans.

Correlational and net regression techniques were used to examine the commonalities and differences in risks for later drug use and delinquency among African American and Puerto Rican adolescents. Eight-eight percent of the risks were significantly related to both problem behaviors. Within the personality, family, peer, ecology, and acculturation domains, many risks independently contributed to the prediction of each problem. Only three risks had a significantly stronger relationship to one of the problem behaviors than to the other. Finding so many common predictors supports a general dimensio

Agricultural injury in California Hispanic farm workers: MICASA follow-up survey.

The authors report here results from the first follow-up survey of the Mexican Immigration to California: Agricultural Safety and Acculturation (MICASA) cohort of community-dwelling immigrant Hispanic farm workers in California's Central Valley. Among 560 participants the authors observed cumulative 1-year injury incidence of 6.6% (all injuries) and 4.3% (agricultural injuries). Increased prospective injury risk was associated with males, US birth, years lived in the United States, family income, and poor self-rated health. Agricultural injuries were associated most frequently with being struc

Pathways to care for Alzheimer's disease among Korean Americans.

Little is known about how Korean Americans make decisions whether to seek help when, experiencing symptoms that might signal dementia. In Study 1, patient registry data for 60 Korean and 212 non-Korean Alzheimer's disease patients revealed that both groups waited 3-4 years before seeking help and sought help when memory decline was accompanied by other problems. Among Korean Americans, those living with family were more impaired than those living alone, suggesting greater, delay in seeking help. In Study 2, 109 Korean Americans ages 18-73 were surveyed concerning acculturation, knowledge, and

Mental health interventions for African refugees resettled in North America: A systematic review.

The number of African refugees migrating to North America (the United States and Canada) has increased significantly over the past decade. Notwithstanding, the prevalence of mental health disorders among African refugees signals an urgent need to address them. We reviewed mental health interventions tailored to African refugees in North America, identified existing gaps, and suggested mental health services improvement recommendations. Using PRISMA guidelines, we identified (n = 1,164), screened (n = 989), assessed (n = 79), and included (n = 7) peer-reviewed articles detailing interventions t

A salutogenic approach to aspects facilitating female immigrants' establishment in working life: an integrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that female immigrants tend to struggle to establish themselves in the working life in a new society. Since previous research has primarily focused on barriers to integration, there is a need for more studies that encompass aspects that make integration toward employment possible for women. PURPOSE: This integrative literature review aimed to explore peer-reviewed research on facilitating aspects for immigrant women in their process of integrating into working life. METHODS: An integrative literature review yielded 15 peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and

Stereotypes of smokers held by Hispanic and white non-Hispanic smokers.

A group of Hispanic and White non-Hispanic smokers were asked to report the stereotypes they hold of smokers in general. All respondents tended to think that smokers were Nervous, Friendly, and Sociable; although White non-Hispanics felt more certain than Hispanics that smokers were Friendly, Aggressive, Sociable, Attractive, and Feminine. Factor analyses of the responses showed three common (across ethnicity) factors: Sociability, Self-Presentation, and Nervousness. Only the Self-Presentation factor showed statistically significant differences between the two ethnic groups. The amount of ciga
