OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a deep learning sequence-adaptive liver multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) assessment with validation in different populations using total and segmental T1 and T2 relaxation time maps.
METHODS: A neural network was trained to label liver segmental parenchyma and its vessels on noncontrast T1-weighted gradient-echo Dixon in-phase acquisitions on 200 liver mpMRI examinations. Then, 120 unseen liver mpMRI examinations of patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis or healthy controls were assessed by coregistering the labels to noncontrast and contrast-enhanced T1 and T2 relaxa

Motor imagery based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) has been extensively researched for neurorehabilitation and motor assistance, while the performance of previous MI-BCI systems for online decoding motor intentions is still not satisfactory. Therefore, a game theory-based adaptive human-machine joint (AHMJ) learning method integrating subject learning and decoder updating was proposed for MI-BCI decoding, by which multi-class MI for unilateral upper limb can be successfully decoded online. On the one hand, a novel MI training method was proposed to facilitate subjects' learning to generate

BACKGROUND: Adaptive trials usually require simulations to determine values for design parameters, demonstrate error rates, and establish the sample size. We designed a Bayesian adaptive trial comparing ventilation strategies for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure using simulations. The complexity of the analysis would usually require computationally expensive Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods but this barrier to simulation was overcome using the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximations (INLA) algorithm to provide fast, approximate Bayesian inference.
METHODS: We simulated two-a

INTRODUCTION: The rapid expansion of algorithmic management in the gig economy has sparked widespread concerns over workers' behavioral resistance to algorithmic constraints, yet the underlying psychological mechanism between perceived algorithmic control and workers' anti-algorithm behavior remains underexplored. This study examines the mechanism linking perceived algorithmic control to workers' anti-algorithm behavior in the gig economy, with particular attention to the mediating role of perceived overqualification.
METHODS: A three-wave longitudinal design was adopted to collect valid data

BACKGROUND: Clinical end point classification (CEC) is the gold standard for cardiovascular end point measurement in clinical trials but adds time and cost. We developed and validated an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm (adaptive AI for CEC [ADAPT-CEC]) that adjudicates multiple cardiovascular end points and adapts to new definitions.
METHODS: ADAPT-CEC was derived from myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and heart failure from the ODYSSEY OUTCOMES (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) trial and externally validated on

Wheels play an important role in automobiles. However, wheel surface defects may have an impact on the safety of the vehicle. Therefore, there is a need to identify the wheel defects. Unlike other common defects, there is a wide variety of wheel surface defects, and the wheel surface contains curved surfaces, which present a challenge for detection. In response to these problems, this paper proposes a wheel surface defect detection algorithm based on an improved YOLOv5. The improved algorithm embeds the efficient channel attention mechanism (ECA) and the adaptive spatial feature fusion (ASFF)

Modern home automation systems include features that enhance security, such as cameras and radars. This paper proposes an innovative home security system that can detect burglars by analyzing acoustic signals and instantly notifying the authorized person(s). The system architecture incorporates the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), resulting in a network and a user-friendly system. The proposed system uses an adaptive detection algorithm, namely the "short-time-average through long-time-average" algorithm. The proposed algorithm is implemented by an IoT device (Arduino Duo) to detect pe

We have developed a novel, model-based active contour algorithm, termed "snakules", for the annotation of spicules on mammography. At each suspect spiculated mass location that has been identified by either a radiologist or a computer-aided detection (CADe) algorithm, we deploy snakules that are converging open-ended active contours also known as snakes. The set of convergent snakules have the ability to deform, grow and adapt to the true spicules in the image, by an attractive process of curve evolution and motion that optimizes the local matching energy. Starting from a natural set of automa

Electrolarynx (EL) speech provides a valuable means of verbal communication for the laryngectomees. Yet EL speech tends to be less intelligible speech due to the presence of background noise. This paper addresses the issue of EL speech enhancement. The proposed approach takes into account the frequency-domain masking properties of the human auditory system for a subtractive-type enhancement process. Subtractive-type algorithms can efficiently reduce the radiated noise of EL speech but not to reduce the additive noise from the environment due to the use of fixed subtraction parameters. Consider

Accurate preoperative grading of prostate cancer is crucial for assisted diagnosis. Multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a commonly used non-invasive approach, however, the interpretation of MRI images is still subject to significant subjectivity due to variations in physicians' expertise and experience. To achieve accurate, non-invasive, and efficient grading of prostate cancer, this paper proposes a deep learning method that adaptively fuses dual-view MRI images. Specifically, a dual-view adaptive fusion model is designed. The model employs encoders to extract embedded featur

This work presents an intention decoding algorithm that can be used to control a 4 degrees-of-freedom shoulder-elbow exoskeleton in reaching tasks. The algorithm was designed to assist the movement of users with upper-limb impairments who can initiate the movement by themselves. It relies on the observation of the initial part of the user's movement through joint angle measures and aims to estimate in real-time the phase of the movement and predict the goal position of the hand in the reaching task. The algorithm is based on adaptive Dynamic Movement Primitives and Gaussian Mixture Models. The

BACKGROUND: New algorithms for disease outbreak detection are being developed to take advantage of full electronic medical records (EMRs) that contain a wealth of patient information. However, due to privacy concerns, even anonymized EMRs cannot be shared among researchers, resulting in great difficulty in comparing the effectiveness of these algorithms. To bridge the gap between novel bio-surveillance algorithms operating on full EMRs and the lack of non-identifiable EMR data, a method for generating complete and synthetic EMRs was developed.
METHODS: This paper describes a novel methodology

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurological disorder characterized by insidious onset. Identifying potential markers in its emergence and progression is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment. Imaging genetics typically merges genetic variables with multiple imaging parameters, employing various association analysis algorithms to investigate the links between pathological phenotypes and genetic variations, and to unearth molecular-level insights from brain images. However, most existing imaging genetics algorithms based on sparse learning assume a linear relationship between ge

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can enable opportunities for self-expression and life participation for children with severe neurological disabilities. Unfortunately, the development and evaluation of state-of-the-art algorithms has largely neglected pediatric users. This work tests 12 state-of-the-art algorithms for motor imagery classification on three datasets of typically developing pediatric users (n=94 ages 5-17). When all datasets were combined, there were no significant differences between most non-deep learning algorithms, with all having a mean AUC score of 0.64 or 0.65. All the non

Disease progression prediction based on patients' evolving health information is challenging when true disease states are unknown due to diagnostic capabilities or high costs. For example, the absence of gold-standard neurological diagnoses hinders distinguishing Alzheimer's disease (AD) from related conditions such as AD-related dementias (ADRDs), including Lewy body dementia (LBD). Combining temporally dependent surrogate labels and health markers may improve disease prediction. However, existing literature models informative surrogate labels and observed variables that reflect the underlyin

Background: Recent advancements in machine learning (ML) have significantly influenced the analysis of brain signals, particularly electroencephalography (EEG), enhancing the detection of complex neural patterns. ML enables large-scale data processing, offering novel opportunities for diagnosing and treating mental disorders. However, challenges such as data variability, noise, and model interpretability remain significant. This study reviews the current limitations of EEG-based anxiety detection and explores the potential of advanced AI models, including transformers and VAE-D2GAN, to improve

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the top infectious killers in the world and a prominent fatal disease in developing countries. This study proposes a prototypical solution to early prevention of TB based on its primary symptoms, signs, and risk factors, implemented by means of machine learning (ML) predictive algorithms. Further novelty of the study lies in the uniqueness of patient dataset collected from three top-ranked hospitals of Sindh, Pakistan, via a self-administered survey patient-records that comprises a set of questions asked by the doctors treating TB patients in real-t

Diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunction with urodynamics has historically relied on data acquired from multiple sensors using nonphysiologically fast cystometric filling. In addition, state-of-the-art neuromodulation approaches to restore bladder function could benefit from a bladder sensor for closed-loop control, but a practical sensor and automated data analysis are not available. We have developed an algorithm for real-time bladder event detection based on a single in situ sensor, making it attractive for both extended ambulatory bladder monitoring and closed-loop control of stimulati
