Emergence of a New Pathogen: A Retrospective Study of HPeV-5 Central Nervous System Disease in Alberta, Canada.

Human parechoviruses (HPeVs) are known to cause meningo-encephalitis among neonates and infants. We aimed to describe the epidemiology of HPeVs causing central nervous system infections in Alberta from 2014 to 2019 with comparison of known HPeV-3 and emerging HPeV-5. Genomic analysis was completed on a subset of HPeV-5 strains to understand genetic relatedness to other known strains. All cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples in Alberta with detection of HPeVs were identified and a case review of medical records was conducted, retrospectively, to gather demographic and clinical details. Descriptive

Patterns and predictors of adherence to colorectal cancer screening recommendations in Alberta's Tomorrow Project participants stratified by risk.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is an important modifiable behaviour for cancer control. Regular screening, following recommendations for the type, timing and frequency based on personal CRC risk, contributes to earlier detection and increases likelihood of successful treatment. METHODS: To determine adherence to screening recommendations in a large provincial cohort of adults, participants in Alberta's Tomorrow Project (n = 9641) were stratified based on increasing level of CRC risk: age (Age-only), family history of CRC (FamilyHx), personal history of bowel conditions (Persona

An economic evaluation of the parent-child assistance program for preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in Alberta, Canada.

Parent-Child Assistance Program (P-CAP) is a 3-year home visitation/harm reduction intervention to prevent alcohol exposed births, thereby births with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, among high-risk women. This article used a decision analytic modeling technique to estimate the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio and the net monetary benefit of the P-CAP within the Alberta Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Service Networks in Canada. The results indicate that the P-CAP is cost-effective and support placing a high priority not only on reducing alcohol use during pregnancy, but also on providing

Trends in the incidence of human papillomavirus-related noncervical and cervical cancers in Alberta, Canada: a population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent epidemiologic studies have suggested that the incidence of noncervical cancers associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) is increasing. We assessed temporal, age-specific and sex-specific changes in the incidence of HPV-associated cancers in a population-based study. METHODS: We used the Alberta Cancer Registry, a registry of all cancers diagnosed in the province of Alberta, Canada, to identify patients with cancers of the oropharynx, cervix, vulva, vagina, anus and penis (cancers associated with HPV) between Jan. 1, 1975, and Dec. 31, 2009. We estimated the age-standard

Bicycle helmet use after the introduction of all ages helmet legislation in an urban community in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Bicycle trauma is a common cause of recreational death and disability and helmets have been shown to reduce fatal and non-fatal head and face injuries. This study evaluated the effect of mandatory bicycle helmet legislation for all ages in St. Albert, Alberta. METHODS: We observed bicyclists from June to September of 2006 in St. Albert, a community subject to both provincial (< 18 years old) and municipal (all ages) helmet legislation, and compared our results with observations taken in 2000 when no legislation existed. Helmet wearing and rider characteristics were recorded by tra

Epidemiological characteristics of an invading parasite: Dicrocoelium dendriticum in sympatric wapiti and beef cattle in southern Alberta, Canada.

Previous surveys of wild ungulates indicate that the liver fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, was rare in the Cypress Hills area of southeastern Alberta. However, 41 of 59 wapiti (Cervus elaphus) sampled during the 2003 and 2004 hunting seasons from this region were infected, with 7 hosts containing >1,000 worms. Prevalence and mean intensity were similarly high in sympatric beef cattle and mule deer. Worm abundance in wapiti was age related, with calves containing significantly higher numbers of worms (mean +/- SD abundance = 825 +/- 1098) than adults (107 +/- 259). This pattern with host age w

Sociodemographic Characteristics Associated with PCSK9 Inhibitor Use in Individuals with Possible Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Alberta: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kinase type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9is) significantly lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) level and improve cardiovascular outcomes, but they remain underutilized, potentially due to access-related barriers. This study examines clinical and sociodemographic factors associated with PCSK9i prescriptions in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: A population-based study was conducted using data from the Alberta Kidney Disease Network. Adults with possible familial hypercholesterolemia (LDL-c ≥ 5 mmol/L) and suboptimal LDL-c control despite high-intensity

Comparative endocranial anatomy in the crocodylians Leidyosuchus canadensis and Stangerochampsa mccabei from the upper Cretaceous of Alberta, Canada.

Crocodylians evolved a high variety of rostral morphologies during their evolutionary history, highlighting the strong links between morphological plasticity and environmental and ecological parameters. Two Late Cretaceous alligatoroids, the mesorostrine Leidyosuchus canadensis Lambe, 1907, and the brevirostrine Stangerochampsa mccabei Wu et al., 1996, from Alberta, Canada, preserve a large groove-shaped recess on the posterior part of the maxilla that has not been documented in other alligatoroids. Despite the potential phylogenetic and paleoecological significance of this neurovascular featu
