We assessed public health use of R0, the basic reproduction number, which estimates the speed at which a disease is capable of spreading in a population. These estimates are of great public health interest, as evidenced during the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) vírus pandemic. We reviewed methods commonly used to estimate R0, examined their practical utility, and assessed how estimates of this epidemiological parameter can inform mitigation strategy decisions. In isolation, R0 is a suboptimal gauge of infectious disease dynamics across populations; other disease parameters may provide more useful inf

Ticks play a critical role as vectors in the transmission and spread of Lyme disease, an emerging infectious disease which can cause severe illness in humans or animals. To understand the transmission dynamics of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases, it is necessary to investigate the population dynamics of ticks. Here, we formulate a system of delay differential equations which models the stage structure of the tick population. Temperature can alter the length of time delays in each developmental stage, and so the time delays can vary geographically (and seasonally which we do not consi

The emergence and spread of mutant pathogens that evade the effects of prophylactic interventions, including vaccines, threatens our ability to control infectious diseases globally. Imperfect vaccines (e.g. those used against influenza), while not providing life-long immunity, confer protection by reducing a range of pathogen life-history characteristics; conversely, mutant pathogens can gain an advantage by restoring the same range of traits in vaccinated hosts. Using an SEIR model motivated by equine influenza, we investigate the evolutionary consequences of alternative types of imperfect va

Antiviral drugs dispensed during the 2009 influenza pandemic generally failed to contain transmission. This poses the question of whether preparedness for a future pandemic should include plans to use antiviral drugs to mitigate transmission.Simulations using a standard transmission model that allows for infected arrivals and delayed vaccination show that attempts to contain transmission require relatively few antiviral doses. In contrast, persistent use of antiviral drugs when the reproduction number remains above 1 use very many doses and are unlikely to reduce the eventual attack rate appre

Cholera, an acute gastro-intestinal infection and a waterborne disease continues to emerge in developing countries and remains an important global health challenge. We formulate a mathematical model that captures some essential dynamics of cholera transmission to study the impact of public health educational campaigns, vaccination and treatment as control strategies in curtailing the disease. The education-induced, vaccination-induced and treatment-induced reproductive numbers R(E), R(V), R(T) respectively and the combined reproductive number R(C) are compared with the basic reproduction numbe

Multiple transmission pathways exist for many waterborne diseases, including cholera, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and Campylobacter. Theoretical work exploring the effects of multiple transmission pathways on disease dynamics is incomplete. Here, we consider a simple ODE model that extends the classical SIR framework by adding a compartment (W) that tracks pathogen concentration in the water. Infected individuals shed pathogen into the water compartment, and new infections arise both through exposure to contaminated water, as well as by the classical SIR person-person transmission pathway. We co

In this paper, we study the stability and saddle-node bifurcation of a model for the West Nile virus transmission dynamics. The existence and classification of the equilibria are presented. By the theory of K-competitive dynamical systems and index theory of dynamical systems on a surface, sufficient and necessary conditions for local stability of equilibria are obtained. We also study the saddle-node bifurcation of the system. Explicit subthreshold conditions in terms of parameters are obtained beyond the basic reproduction number which provides further guidelines for accessing control of the

In this paper, we consider the global dynamics of a HBV infection model with degenerate diffusion, DNA-containing capsids and time-delays in heterogeneous environment. Since only the free virus equation contains a diffusion term, the model is partially degenerate, which makes that the solution semiflow lacks compactness. In addition, different to early works, the consideration of time-delay effect increases the difficulty in studying the dynamics of the model. To overcome these difficulties, we regard the model as a one-periodic system. Then, apply the method of Kuratowski's measure of non-com

The 2009 influenza A (H1N1) epidemic in China provided a unique natural experiment to evaluate school closures, as it overlapped with two school vacations. Utilizing the epidemiological data from this outbreak, our study specifically assesses the impact of holidays and systematically evaluates the efficacy of school-specific prevention measures in curbing influenza transmission. By using the enhanced piecewise linear representation model and calculating the effective reproduction number Rt, we divided the entire pandemic period into six stages. We employed the Susceptible-Exposed-Infective-Rem

We present a model of infectious disease dynamics where individuals can transition between different compartments, which may have distinct epidemiological characteristics. Within each compartment, epidemic dynamics are represented by a staged progression epidemic model. Individual transitions between compartments occur on a faster time scale, allowing the initial model to be reduced for analysis. In the reduced model, disease eradication and endemicity are characterized by the basic reproduction number. The relationship between this basic reproduction number and those associated with each comp

PURPOSE: Residential segregation is linked to racial and socioeconomic inequity in outcomes for numerous infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, STIs, and tuberculosis. Despite the importance of segregation as a driver of infection inequity, there are few mathematical models to inform our understanding of these dynamics.
METHODS: We developed a transmission model including mechanistic relationships between residential segregation and infection inequity. We conceptualize segregation as a fundamental social cause of infection inequity that jointly impacts contact patterns and vulnerability

Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease, is a serious concern in developing and underdeveloped areas. A qualitative understanding of cholera epidemics aims to foresee transmission patterns based on reported data and mechanistic models. The mechanistic model is a crucial tool for capturing the dynamics of disease transmission and population spread. However, using real-time cholera cases is essential for forecasting the transmission trend. This prospective study seeks to furnish insights into transmission trends through qualitative dynamics followed by machine learning-based forecasting. The Monte C

We have come a long way since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic-from hoarding toilet paper and wiping down groceries to sending our children back to school and vaccinating billions. Over this period, the global community of epidemiologists and evolutionary biologists has also come a long way in understanding the complex and changing dynamics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19. In this Review, we retrace our steps through the questions that this community faced as the pandemic unfolded. We focus on the key roles that mathematical mod

The aim of this work is to investigate the optimal vaccine sharing between two susceptible, infected, removed (SIR) centres in the presence of migration fluxes of susceptibles and infected individuals during the mumps outbreak. Optimality of the vaccine allocation means the minimization of the total number of lost working days during the whole period of epidemic outbreak $[0,t_f]$, which can be described by the functional $Q=\int _0^{t_f}I(t)\,{\textrm{d}}t$, where $I(t)$ stands for the number of infectives at time $t$. We explain the behaviour of the optimal allocation, which depends on the m

In this paper, we derive and analyse a model for the control of arboviral diseases which takes into account an imperfect vaccine combined with some other control measures already studied in the literature. We begin by analysing the basic model without control. We prove the existence of two disease-free equilibrium points and the possible existence of up to two endemic equilibrium points (where the disease persists in the population). We show the existence of a transcritical bifurcation and a possible saddle-node bifurcation and explicitly derive threshold conditions for both, including definin

A multi-patch SEIQR epidemic model is formulated to investigate the long-term impact of entry-exit screening measures on the spread and control of infectious diseases. A threshold dynamics determined by the basic reproduction number R₀ is established: The disease can be eradicated if R₀ < 1, while the disease persists if R₀ > 1. As an application, six different screening strategies are explored to examine the impacts of screening on the control of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. We find that it is crucial to screen travelers from and to high-risk patches, and it is not necessary to imple

Indirect transmission through the environment, pathogen shedding by infectious hosts, replication of free-living pathogens within the environment, and environmental decontamination are suspected to play important roles in the spread and control of environmentally transmitted infectious diseases. To account for these factors, the classic Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered-Susceptible epidemic model is modified to include a compartment representing the amount of free-living pathogen within the environment. The model accounts for host demography, direct and indirect transmission, replication of fre

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is one of the major public-health problems in China. Based on the HFMD data of the Department of Health of Shandong Province, we propose a dynamic model with periodic transmission rates to investigate the seasonal HFMD. After evaluating the basic reproduction number, we analyze the dynamical behaviors of the model and simulate the HFMD data of Shandong Province. By carrying out the sensitivity analysis of some key parameters, we conclude that the recessive subpopulation plays an important role in the spread of HFMD, and only quarantining the infected is not

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a severe viral zoonosis in Africa and the Middle East that harms both human health and livestock production. It is believed that RVF in Egypt has been repeatedly introduced by the importation of infected animals from Sudan. In this paper, we propose a three-patch model for the process by which animals enter Egypt from Sudan, are moved up the Nile, and then consumed at population centers. The basic reproduction number for each patch is introduced and then the threshold dynamics of the model are established. We simulate an interesting scenario showing a possible explan
