Quantitative lead determination in coating paint on children's outwear by LA-ICP-MS: a practical calibration strategy for solid samples.

Lead is a hazardous compound that affects the central nervous system in people, particularly children, and may cause some reversible and irreversible diseases. Legal regulations try to prevent the exposure from products especially produced for children such as coating paints, jewelry, toys, bed linen, textile, etc. The aim of this study was to determine the lead levels of coating paints on children׳s outwear selling in district bazaar by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and to specify the percent of non-complying samples. Here we described the solid matri

Allergy prevalence and causal factors in the domestic environment: results of a random population survey in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Surveys of the prevalence of allergic diseases associated with domestic allergens (eg, asthma, rhinitis, hay fever, eczema, and dermatitis) are usually undertaken in restricted geographic areas. They are often based on specific demographic subgroups (eg, children) or are derived from treatment data (eg, GP consultations). Causal factors are seldom quantified in these reports. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to quantify the prevalence of allergic disease among a representative cross-section of population in the United Kingdom. It was also designed to quantify the reported causal

Human Monkeypox: Old virus with new Epidemiological and Transmission Trends.

Human monkeypox is an emerging zoonotic disease caused by a monkeypox virus. The monkeypox virus history originated in 1958 after the occurrence of a pox-like illness in monkeys. In September 1970, the first case of human monkeypox was identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. This year, from January 01, to September 30, 2022, the virus swiftly spread from endemic to non-endemic counties, involving 106 states, infecting 68,017 people; 689 cases from 07 endemic African countries and 67,328 cases in 99 non-endemic countries in Europe, America, Asia and Oceania continents. Risk factors for Ebola virus disease among household care providers, Sierra Leone, 2015.

BACKGROUND: Household contacts who provide care to an Ebola virus disease (EVD) case have a 3-fold higher risk of EVD compared with contacts who do not provide care. METHODS: We enrolled persons with confirmed EVD from December 2014 to April 2015 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and their household contacts. Index cases and contacts were interviewed, and contacts were followed for 21 days to identify secondary cases. Epidemiological data were analysed to describe household care and to identify risk factors for developing EVD. RESULTS: Of 838 contacts in 147 households, 156 (17%) self-reported prov

The environmental stress sensitivities of pathogenic Candida species, including Candida auris, and implications for their spread in the hospital setting.

Candida auris is an emerging pathogenic yeast of significant clinical concern because of its frequent intrinsic resistance to fluconazole and often other antifungal drugs and the high mortality rates associated with systemic infections. Furthermore, C. auris has a propensity for persistence and transmission in health care environments. The reasons for this efficient transmission are not well understood, and therefore we tested whether enhanced resistance to environmental stresses might contribute to the ability of C. auris to spread in health care environments. We compared C. auris to other pa

Deltamethrin-impregnated bednets reduce human landing rates of sandfly vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in Amazon households.

The entomological efficacy of using 25% deltamethrin EC insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) was evaluated against the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae), the principal vector of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) in Latin America. A crossover field study in Amazon Brazil (Marajó Island, Pará State) demonstrated that, compared with untreated nets, the insecticide increased the barrier effect of nets by 39% (95% confidence interval [CI] 34-44%), reduced human landing rates by 80% (95% CI 62-90%) and increased the 24-h mortality rate from 0% to 98% (95% CI 93-99

Control of endophagic Anopheles mosquitoes and human malaria in Guinea Bissau, West Africa by permethrin-treated bed nets.

We compared the anti-mosquito and antimalarial potentialities of placebo-treated versus permethrin-impregnated bed nets in north-western Guinea Bissau. Baseline, pre-intervention entomological and parasitological data were collected during the rainy season of 1990 and bed nets were distributed shortly before the rainy season of 1991. Pairs of 3 ethnically different villages were investigated. The villages in each pair were at least 2 km apart but belonged to the same ethnic group in an ecologically similar area. After one year permethrin-treated bed nets were provided to all people in one vill

Prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the homes and nursing homes of scabietic patients.

This study determined the prevalence of Sarcoptes scabiei in the home environment of 37 confirmed cases of scabies and in five nursing homes with scabietic patients. Dust samples from 44% of infested patients' homes contained scabies mites. Live mites at the time the dust samples were analyzed were present in 64% of these homes. Live mites were recovered most often from bedroom floors or overstuffed chairs and couches. The density of live and dead mites ranged from 1 to 5 mites/0.1 gm of dust or 1 to 9 mites/m2 of surface area sampled. The presence of mites in fomites coupled with survival and

The cost of keeping warm: a relationship between a rise in the cost of domestic energy and burn injuries caused by personal heating equipment.

INTRODUCTION: During 2022-2023, the UK found itself in the midst of a domestic energy crisis, with the average domestic gas and electricity bill rising by 75% between 2019 and 2022. As a result, the use of hot water bottles, radiant heaters, and electric blankets increased. An unintended consequence of this may be an increase in burn injuries caused by misfortune, misuse, or the use of items in a state of disrepair. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore any increase in referrals to a single burns centre in England for injuries caused by hot water bottles, radiant heaters, or electric

Insecticide-treated materials for malaria control in Latin America: to use or not to use?

Studies on the protective efficacy of insecticide-treated materials (ITMs) in Plasmodium vivax endemic areas of Latin America have not yielded sufficient evidence for recommendation of their extensive use in the region. Therefore 2 randomized community trials have been conducted on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua which analysed the minimum coverage of ITMs needed to be effective against malaria. For the characterization of the study area, epidemiological and entomological baseline surveys and household interview surveys were undertaken. Thereafter the communities were paired (6 pairs in the 1st

Reducing pressure ulcer incidence through Braden Scale risk assessment and support surface use.

OBJECTIVE: To collect available evidence showing that some hospitals have been able to markedly reduce pressure ulcer incidence despite broad surveys in previous recent years that demonstrated little or no progress and to provide guidance to hospitals through analysis of the evidence showing incidence reduction to be expected by taking the measures indicated. APPROACH: At the time of the article's writing, a review of the literature was conducted using PubMed. References were sought that cited hospitals using the Braden Scale to identify at-risk patients and providing pressure-reducing surfac
