Comparison of cognitive-behavior therapy and desipramine in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.

A comparison of cognitive-behavior therapy alone, desipramine alone, and cognitive-behavior therapy combined with desipramine was made in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. The study was terminated early with an N of only 7 subjects per condition because of a high drop-out rate and lack of positive response in the desipramine alone group compared to the other two groups. By this time it was also apparent that at posttreatment and at 6 months follow-up no benefit was being realized from combining cognitive-behavior therapy with desipramine.

Buspirone therapy for Type A behavior, hostility, and perceived stress in cardiac patients.

Hostility is considered to be a risk factor for coronary artery disease. Despite the findings of reduced serotonergic function and effectiveness of treatment with serotonergic agents in similar symptom complexes, there have been no attempts at using serotonergic psychopharmacologic agents to treat this population. We conducted an 8-week open trial of 10 type A, irritable men with coronary artery disease and no diagnosable psychiatric (axis I) condition to examine the effects of buspirone on these subjects. Buspirone appears to significantly reduce type A behavior, hostility, anxiety, impatienc

[Interactive relations between sexual behavior and post-menopausal replacement hormone therapy: a survey].

A study carried out in 1988 using a representative sample of the French male and female population aged between 52 and 70 provides information concerning one of the presumed motivations for the use of replacement hormone therapy: to "always be a woman". In 1988 the sexual activity of French couples decreased on average after the age of 50 or thereabouts in a proportion identical to that seen in 1970. The chief limiting factor is reduced libido in women, far more than simple dyspareunia or relative male impotence. The majority of women interviewed did not wish to react against this fall in sexu

An uncontrolled evaluation of inpatient and outpatient cognitive-behavior therapy for bulimia nervosa.

Inpatient (n = 27) and outpatient (n = 22) cognitive-behavior therapy programs for bulimia nervosa were evaluated in an uncontrolled experiment. Both treatment conditions included exposure with response prevention and cognitive restructuring. Inpatient treatment had a mean length of stay of 5 weeks. Outpatient treatment lasted 15 weeks. Both groups were followed after the end of treatment. The results showed that both programs were effective in reducing problems associated with bulimia nervosa. The inpatient program led to very rapid progress, whereas the outpatient program led to more gradual

Cognitive behavioral therapies are evidence-based - based on what? A systematic review and meta-analysis of recent randomized controlled trials of cognitive behavioral therapies for depression.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to map the last five years' randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) for depression to determine what types of CBTs are currently being investigated and how they are evaluated. METHODS: As per the pre-registration (Prospero; #CRD42023427902), RCTs of CBTs for depression (2019 through 2023) were identified from searches in PubMed and PsycINFO. We reviewed the type of CBT, outcome (e.g., positive outcomes, neuropsychological performance), frequency, and efficacy, in addition to the assessment of moderation, mediation, and adverse events.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Enhanced Behavior Therapy as An Intervention for Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder (Skin Picking): A Review.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) is the most empirically supported treatment of trichotillomania. Support for A-EBT for excoriation disorder is budding. In this article, we review the A-EBT model, including support for targeting psychological inflexibility, as well as the use of traditional behavioral procedures to reduce non-focused behaviors. To date there are 17 studies investigating A-EBT for trichotillomania and skin picking across ages and treatment delivery methods (individual, group, telehealth, and asynchronous web-based delivery). The work has

Treatment mechanism and outcome decoupling effects in cognitive therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction, and behavior therapy for chronic pain.

Findings suggest that cognitive therapy (CT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), and behavior therapy (BT) for chronic pain produce improvements through changes in putative mechanisms. Evidence supporting this notion is largely based on findings showing significant associations between treatment mechanism variables and outcomes. An alternative view is that treatments may work by reducing or decoupling the impact of changes in mechanism variables on changes in outcomes. We examined the degree to which relationships between previous changes in potential treatment mechanisms and subsequen

A comparison of telehealth and in-person delivery of alcohol behavioral couple therapy.

INTRODUCTION: There is a persistent scarcity of research examining telehealth delivery of evidence-based alcohol use disorder (AUD) interventions. This secondary analysis explored whether Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) treatment outcomes differed when delivered via telehealth versus in-person. METHOD: Participants were N = 96 adult romantic couples enrolled in a clinical trial in which all participants received ABCT. Couples who participated entirely in person (n = 15) were compared to those who completed at least one telehealth session (n = 81). We compared 1) feasibility and accep

Impact of Adherence to Digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia Effectiveness.

PURPOSE: Although digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (dCBT-I) offers a promising solution to the accessibility limitations of traditional face-to-face CBT-I, few studies have examined dCBT-I against a sham app and adherence issues remain. This study assessed the efficacy of dCBT-I compared with a sham app and investigated whether adherence predicts sleep outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this combined analysis of two multicenter, double-blind, sham-controlled randomized controlled trials, 120 patients with insomnia were randomized to use the dCBT-I app (n=60) or a sham app (n

Hypnotic Medications as an Adjunct Treatment to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the universally recommended treatment of choice for insomnia disorder based on its safety and posttreatment durability of benefit. However, CBT-I does not help all patients achieve remission. The second most evidence-based treatment, hypnotic pharmacotherapy (PCT), does not resolve perpetuating factors of insomnia, resulting in potential waning of benefit and dependence. This article presents a rationale that supports consideration of hypnotic augmentation of CBT-I (COMB), along with a review of select randomized controlled trials relevant t

[Intensive cognitive behavioral group therapy for the treatment of panic disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Panic disorder is one of the most commonly occurring emotional disorder, showing increased prevalence rates since the COVID-19 pandemic. The ever-growing number of patients in need of treatment is a heavy burden on the healthcare system, which draws attention to the importance of low-intensity, short and effective psychological interventions in the treatment of mental disorders, especially in the field of primary care. According to international guidelines, the recommended evidence-based treatment of panic disorder is cognitive behavioral therapy, which is based on the cognitive

Cognitive-behavioral, behavioural and mindfulness-based therapies for insomnia in menopause.

OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is frequently reported by women during menopause due to physiological changes and environmental factors and is associated with negative daytime sequelae. Due to medication side effects and patient preferences, there is increased interest in the use of psychological treatments for menopausal insomnia. The primary objective of this review is to review the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, and mindfulness-based (CBBMB) therapies in treating insomnia in peri- and post-menopausal women. The secondary objective is to review the effect of CBBMB therapies on relevant s

Effect of Behavioral Cough Suppression Therapy Delivered via Telehealth.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Behavioral cough suppression therapy (BCST) has demonstrated up to 88% effectiveness at treating refractory chronic cough (RCC). With onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with many other medical services, BCST shifted to telehealth delivery. Our group hypothesized that BCST delivered via telemedicine by a specialized Speech-Language Pathologist would be comparable to previously reported response to treatment for in-person settings. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review. METHODS: An Emory IRB approved, retrospective review of electronic medical records was completed for R

Editorial: Applications of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy in Response to COVID-19.

The corona virus (COVID-19) continues to have a devastating health, economic, and social impact on our local and international communities. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (CBTs), as a family of therapies that posit cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and interpersonal change processes in the understanding and successful treatment of mental health disorders, have risen to the challenge. This special issue represents contributions from CBT experts on the impact on psychopathology, new assessment methods, adaptations of integrated behavioral health, telehealth, psychology training, and discusse

Cognitive-behavioral and related therapies for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention is the first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). We review here recent developments in CBT and related therapies in treating OCD and related disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Superiority of CBT over medications in treating OCD is being questioned by some recent meta-analyses, nonetheless CBT continues to be the mainstay of treatment. Web-based therapies have been shown to be beneficial in treating at least mild-to-moderately ill

Remote cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder: A meta-analysis.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an established treatment for panic disorder (PD). Remote CBT (RCBT) is becoming increasingly popular and has the potential to enhance access to this treatment. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of RCBT for PD using a meta-analytic approach. An electronic database search was used to identify relevant articles and the references of previously completed reviews. Twenty-one studies (n = 1,604; mean age range: 31.9-43.9; mean female representation = 71 %) were included in the meta-analysis. 14/21 (67 %; n = 817 of the included studies were rando
