Purpose: We investigated associations between maternal comfort with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people during the participant's adolescence and their health indicators in adulthood. Methods: Data came from a prospective cohort, Growing Up Today Study (N = 7476), limited to men and women who provided information during their adulthood about recent binge drinking, cigarette smoking, or disordered weight control behaviors (DWCB) and whose mothers provided information during the participant's adolescence about her comfort with LGB people. Results: Increased maternal comfort with LGB people wa

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with negative adult health outcomes, including alcohol misuse. The impact of ACEs on alcohol use may vary by gender, with ACEs impacting women more than men in coping with adulthood stressors.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to examine the gender-specific relationships between ACEs and self-reported binge drinking and heavy drinking in adulthood among South Carolina residents.
METHODS: This study analyzed a sample of 8492 respondents who completed the 2014 or 2015 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillan

BACKGROUND Physicians who have healthy lifestyles can provide quality healthcare to their patients and keep themselves healthy. There is little data on the prevalence of drinking behaviors and problems among East Asian medical students. Here, we explored alcohol use and drinking motives among medical students in Korea. MATERIAL AND METHODS A questionnaire-based, multicenter, cross-sectional study was carried out in 323 students from 5 medical colleges in Korea between July and October 2016. We used the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) and an anonymous, se

BACKGROUND: Few studies have employed standardized alcohol misuse measures to assess relationships with sexual risk and HIV/syphilis infections among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM).
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among MSM in Beijing during 2013-2014. An interviewer-administered survey was conducted to collect data on sociodemographics, high-risk behaviors, and alcohol use/misuse patterns (hazardous/binge drinking and risk of alcohol dependence) in the past 3 months using Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C). We defined AUDIT-C score ≥4 as rec

Alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern among Latino men and Latina transgender women who have sex with men. However, characteristics and behaviors associated with alcohol consumption in this population, particularly in regard to the complex influence of syndemic factors, remain understudied. The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of high-risk alcohol consumption (i.e. binge or heavy drinking). Between January and March of 2014, 176 Latino men and Latina transgender women in New York City completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire. We developed a syndem

BACKGROUND: Although alcoholics show neurodegeneration after decades of drinking, recent studies with an animal model of binge drinking have found corticolimbic damage after as few as four days. Neurodegeneration can occur through apoptotic or necrotic mechanisms. The goal of this research is to characterize the time course of binge ethanol-induced neurodegeneration and to identify apoptotic or necrotic characteristics of this neurodegeneration.
METHODS: Histologic methods (e.g., amino cupric silver staining, Fluoro-Jade B, hematoxylin and eosin, transmission electron microscopy) were used to

PURPOSE: To examine the association between drinking patterns and subsequent antidepressant medication using register-linked data.
METHODS: The Helsinki Health Study survey (2000-02) of 40- to 60-year-old employees was linked with antidepressant medication data from registers of the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Drinking patterns included weekly amount of drinking, binge drinking and problem drinking. Cox regression analysis was used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) for the first antidepressant medication purchase during five-year follow-up. Gender, age, occupational position, marit

Binge drinking or heavy episodic drinking is a high prevalent pattern of alcohol consumption among young people in several countries. Despite increasing evidence that binge drinking is associated with impairments in executive aspects of working memory (i.e. self-ordered working memory), processes known to depend on the mid-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (Brodmann areas 46 and 9), less is known about the impact of binge drinking on prefrontal gray matter integrity. Here, we investigated the effects of binge drinking on gray matter volume of mid- dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in youths. We used

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption has been associated with poor antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence but less is known about its relationship to HIV viral suppression, or whether certain drinking patterns have a stronger association than others. The objectives of this study were to determine the association of different patterns of alcohol consumption to HIV viral suppression and ART adherence, and to determine whether any associations of alcohol with HIV viral suppression were mediated by poor ART adherence.
METHODS: This observational study used baseline data from 619 HIV+ participants, rec

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection. Risky behaviours such as non-condom use, smoking, and binge drinking tend to cluster within the same individuals, increasing their propensity to become infected with HPV. This study aimed to compare risk behaviours, including non-condom use, smoking, and frequent binge drinking, among HPV-vaccinated and unvaccinated young women in Denmark.
METHODS: Survey data from 14,614 young women aged 15-23 years from the Danish National Youth Study 2019 was used to analyze non-condom use, smoking, and frequent binge drinki

BACKGROUND: US and Northern European studies have found a higher prevalence of alcohol-related problems among men who have sex with men (MSM) than among the general population of men (GPM). However, most of them relied on traditional sampling methods, not profiting from MSM dating apps and websites for recruitment. Besides, analogous comparisons in Southern Europe are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare several indicators of excessive drinking between MSM and GPM in Spain.
METHODS: Overall, 5862 MSM were recruited through dating apps or websites for the Méthysos Project, and 10,3

OBJECTIVE: This analysis examines the role of alcohol consumption in success at quitting smoking.
METHOD: Participants were 3,977 men and women in the Lung Health Study, a prospective investigation of the effect of smoking cessation and an inhaled bronchodilator on the airways of smokers with mild lung function impairment. Participants reporting more than 25 drinks per week, or 8 or more drinks per occasion once a month or more, or alcoholics who drank in the past year were excluded from the sample.
RESULTS: There was no relationship between amount of alcohol consumed at baseline and smoking

INTRODUCTION: Effective interventions show heterogeneity in treatment response. Addressing this heterogeneity involves identifying which intervention works best for whom. One method to address this heterogeneity identifies treatment-subgroup interactions to determine which of two interventions has greater effect for certain individuals based on their profile of pre-treatment characteristics. This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) to address binge drinking examined whether two of the RCT's interventions, GOAL and COMBO, which produced similar reductions in drinking outcome

BACKGROUND: High rates of hazardous and binge drinking patterns have been identified among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa. AGYW also bear the highest burden of HIV/AIDS in the country, placing them at increased risk of negative outcomes for both HIV and alcohol.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of alcohol use and describe the patterns of use for AGYW enrolled in the HERStory Study. Secondary aims included identifying covariates of alcohol consumption and examining the impact of alcohol use patterns on the HIV care continuum.
METHODS: We included all 4 377 AGYW

Alcohol misuse is more prevalent, frequent, and severe among young adults who use cannabis. Treatment of dual alcohol and cannabis users may have mixed results, with some studies reporting that alcohol misuse increases when cannabis use decreases (substance substitution), while others report that alcohol misuse decreases along with decreasing cannabis use (treatment spillover), and others report no association. Additionally, little research tests whether gender differences are found in treatment of dual alcohol and cannabis users, which may be expected given previous alcohol-focused treatments

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is an extremely prevalent but preventable risk factor among women seeking to become pregnant. Many women continue to use alcohol in the early stages of pregnancy before they are aware they are pregnant. Research is unclear about the role of maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and congenital cardiac defects, one of the leading types of birth defects in the United States.
METHODS: Data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring Survey (PRAMS) were used to examine maternal alcohol use and its association with congenital cardiac defects. Various measures of alcohol us

Alcohol use and drinking motives were investigated among college women divided into four probable eating disorder groups: Bulimia Nervosa, purging subtype (BN n=16) Binge Eating Disorder (BED n=30) Eating Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS n=85) and Non-Eating Disordered Controls (NEDC n=252). Participants completed questionnaires that assessed eating behaviors and attitudes, motives for drinking alcohol, quantity and frequency of alcohol use, and binge drinking. The BED group reported greater weekend alcohol consumption and binge drinking than the EDNOS and NEDC groups. The BN and BED g

CONTEXT: Alcohol consumption is responsible for numerous life-threatening diseases, including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and various cancers. During the pandemic, alcohol-related deaths increased from 2019 to 2021, topping out at approximately 108,000 deaths related to alcohol. This trend also introduced the question whether heavy alcohol consumption and binge drinking increased during the pandemic, particularly in those 65 and older.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to determine whether heavy alcohol consumption and binge drinking increased during the pandemic in older adults

There is an established inverse relationship between the regular light consumption of alcohol (5-10 g/day) and the incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD). This association has several biologically plausible mechanisms with dose-dependent effects of alcohol to increase HDL cholesterol, lower plasma fibrinogen and inhibit platelet aggregation. However, such a protective effect against atheroma cannot be considered in isolation from known adverse effects on blood pressure and triglycerides or possible detrimental effects of episodic or binge drinking on several other cardiovascular end-points
