The body and leg skin temperatures of five pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) were measured at various ambient air temperatures ranging from 22 to 32°C over 24-h periods. The rhythm in core body temperature persisted in all ambient air temperatures, and the rhythm in leg skin temperature was suppressed at the higher and lower ambient temperatures. This suggests that at the upper and lower regions of the thermoneutral zone, either a rhythm in heat production or a heat loss rhythm other than leg skin temperature is regulating the core body temperature rhythm. It was also found that the mean

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous laboratory studies in narcolepsy patients showed altered core body and skin temperatures, which are hypothesised to be related to a disturbed sleep wake regulation. In this ambulatory study we assessed temperature profiles in normal daily life, and whether sleep attacks are heralded by changes in skin temperature. Furthermore, the effects of three months of treatment with sodium oxybate (SXB) were investigated.
METHODS: Twenty-five narcolepsy patients and 15 healthy controls were included. Core body, proximal and distal skin temperatures, and sleep-wake state were m

This study analyzed the physiological parameters, hair characteristics, and heat exchange mechanisms of native Garfagnina goats in a temperate climate, accounting for seasonal variations and coat color. A total of 50 adult, lactating Garfagnina goats were used for this extensive evaluation. Significant seasonal fluctuations were observed in various metrics: rectal temperature (P = 0.0002), respiratory rate (P = 0.0008), heart rate, hair diameter, and hair length (P < 0.0001). During winter, the variables rectal temperature, heart rate, and hair length were higher than in summer. Additionally,

BACKGROUND: We assessed the efficacy of Embrace Nest Infant Warmer versus Cloth Wrap in preventing hypothermia during short-term transport from the emergency department (ED) to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
METHODS: Neonates weighing ≥1500 g coming to the ED were randomized for transport to the NICU. Axillary temperature was measured.
RESULTS: A total of 120 newborns (60 per group) were enrolled. From ED exit to NICU entry, the mean (SD) temperature increased in the Embrace group by 0.37 °C (0.54), whereas it reduced by 0.38 °C (0.80) in the Cloth group (p < 0.001). Hypothermia ca

Spinal cord injury results in physiologic adaptations affecting heat production (reduced muscle mass) and heat dissipation (blood redistribution and reduced sweating capacity below the level of lesion). However, it is the balance between these factors which determines whether heat balance is achieved. Core temperature estimates are generally consistent with those for the able-bodied, with cooler values reported in some instances. More notable differences are demonstrated through cooler lower-body skin temperatures at rest and a loss of anticipatory control during exposure to heat and cold when

Breeding of golden hamsters is classically performed at thermal conditions ranging from 20 to 24 °C. However, growing evidence suggests that lactating females suffer from heat stress. We hypothesised that shaving females dorsally to maximise heat dissipation may reduce stress during reproduction. We thus compared faecal cortisol metabolites (FCM) from shaved golden hamster mothers with those from unshaved controls. We observed significantly lower FCM levels in the shaved mothers (F1,22 = 8.69, p = 0.0075) pointing to lower stress due to ameliorated heat dissipation over the body surface. In ad

In many occupational settings, clothing must be worn to protect individuals from hazards in their work environment. However, personal protective clothing (PPC) restricts heat exchange with the environment due to high thermal resistance and low water vapor permeability. As a consequence, individuals who wear PPC often work in uncompensable heat stress conditions where body heat storage continues to rise and the risk of heat injury is greatly enhanced. Tolerance time while wearing PPC is influenced by three factors: (i) initial core temperature (Tc), affected by heat acclimation, precooling, hyd

Three experiments assessed the importance of behavioral regulation of hair lipids for thermoregulation in Meriones unguiculatus. Experiment I demonstrated that animals exposed for 8-11 days at 34 degrees C had reduced body-hair lipids and a smaller increase in body temperature when exposed to tungsten light radiation than animals exposed to 5 degrees C. Experiment II confirmed that the effect was due to differential hair lipids and not heat acclimation, as the hyperthermic response and change in hair lipids were attenuated when animals were allowed to sandbathe at 34 degrees C. Experiment III

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the impact of active external warming on afterdrop in simulated accidental hypothermia, compared to the effect of passive warming measures.
METHODS: This study used data from a randomized crossover field study of experimental hypothermia. Hypothermia was induced in 11 healthy volunteers by pharmacological inhibition of endogenous thermoregulation and exposure to -2°C ambient air in a glacial ice tunnel, wearing wet clothes for a maximum of 2 h, or until their esophageal temperature reached 35°C. Esophageal temperature was measured using a transnasal probe

The present study aims to compare the testicular development and the capacity to maintain homeothermy and scrotal thermoregulation of young Nelore and Canchim (5/8 Charolais × 3/8 Bos indicus) bulls raised in the tropics, using infrared thermography and color Doppler ultrasonography. Forty-eight young bulls (24 Nelore and 24 Canchim) were raised using an intensive rotational grazing system (Urochloa brizantha, cv. BRS Piatã). The bulls had free access to shade and rotated between paddocks every seven days, with the pastures resting for thirty-five days. Over 12 consecutive months, the bulls we

Physiological and hematological traits and productive performance of Spanish Majorera and Palmera goats reared on the Island of Tenerife-Spain were assessed. 50 adult, clinically healthy, multiparous female goats were studied for 18 months. The data were analyzed in a two (breeds) x four (season) factorial scheme. Multivariate analysis and machine learning were used to assess the relationship between adaptive responses and climatic variables. There was no interaction effect between season of the year and breed for physiological responses (P > 0.05), except for coat surface temperature (P < 0.0

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia is a known risk for sudden unexpected infant death. The practice of hat placement at birth to prevent transient hypothermia may not be necessary and sets an early standard for clothing infants that may lead to hyperthermia postnatally.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the elimination of hats on thermoregulation (eg, hypothermia, <97.6°F) in full-term newborns with no abnormalities within 24 hours of birth.
METHODS: In 2018, an institution guideline discontinued the use of hats at birth. Subsequently, newborn body temperatures were respectively extracted from electronic health r

OBJECTIVE: Otopetrin 1 (OTOP1) is a proton channel that is highly expressed in brown adipose tissue. We examined the physiology of Otop1-/- mice, which lack functional OTOP1.
METHODS: Mice were studied by indirect calorimetry and telemetric ambulatory body temperature monitoring. Mitochondrial function was measured as oxygen consumption and extracellular acidification.
RESULTS: Otop1-/- mice had similar body temperatures as control mice at baseline and in response to cold and hot ambient temperatures. However, in response to fasting the Otop1-/- mice exhibited an exaggerated hypothermia and

Varicocele is defined as the pathological dilatation of the pampiniform plexus and scrotal veins with venous blood reflux. Varicocele may impair scrotal thermoregulation and spermatogenesis, even when present in asymptomatic forms. In this study, we use the control system theory to model scrotal thermoregulation in response to a standardized cold challenge in order to study the functional thermal impairment secondary to varicocele. The proposed model is based on a homeostatic negative feedback loop, characterized by four distinct parameters, which describe how the control mechanisms are activa

CONTEXT: Impaired vigilance and sleepiness are two majordaily complaints of patients with narcolepsy. We previously showed their sleepiness to be correlated to an abnormally regulated skin temperature, i.e., increased distal skin temperature compared with proximal skin temperature.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to investigate a possible causal contribution of skin temperature disturbances to impairments in the ability to maintain vigilance and wakefulness in narcolepsy.
DESIGN: In a modified constant routine protocol, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) and the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MW

Selective brain cooling (SBC) of varying strengths has been demonstrated in a number of mammals and appears to play a role in systemic thermoregulation. Although primates lack obvious specialization for SBC, the possibility of brain cooling in humans has been debated for many years. This paper reports on the use of mathematical modeling to explore whether surface cooling can control effectively the temperature of the human cerebrum. The brain was modeled as a hemisphere with a volume of 1.33 1 and overlying layers of cerebrospinal fluid, skull, and scalp. Each component was assigned appropriat

A series of five experiments was undertaken in order to characterize the pharmacological effects of alcohol on the body temperature of the unrestrained rat. After a thermistor probe was fixed within the colon of each animal and its body temperature had stabilized, physiological saline. 2.0 g/kg or 4.0 g/kg of ethyl alcohol was given by intragastric gavage. A constant concentration of 20% was utilized with doses determined volumetrically according to the individual weight of the animal. The following observations were made: (1) At a laboratory room temperature of 22 degrees C, alcohol produced

The calorigenic response (millilitres O2 per gram pre hour) to injected norepinephrine (NE) was compared as an index of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) in the following groups of the Alaska red-backed vole (Clethrionomys rutilus): (1) summer, (2) fall acclimatized, (3) winter acclimatized, (4) 20 degrees C acclimated and (5) 5 degrees C acclimated. The metabolic response was tested at thermoneutrality (25 degrees C) and during cold exposure (5 degrees C). Winter acclimatized voles showed a significantly greater metabolic response to NE than summer voles at both 25 degrees C and 5 degrees C. I
