In this study the involvement of peripheral gamma delta T cells, prepared by flow cytometry, in the immune response of cattle to primary infection with Trypanosoma congolense was assessed. Negligible in vitro proliferative responses were observed in gamma delta T cells isolated from trypanosusceptible Boran (Bos indicus) cattle at all stages examined post-infection when stimulated in vitro with parasite antigens. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) are key enzymes in prostanoid and leukotriene signaling and are overexpressed in various cancers, correlating with malignancy and metastasis. We report a facile protocol to obtain 22-substituted furostans and pseudosapogenins in high yields from (25R)- and (25S)-sapogenins. This method involves the treatment of the sapogenin with acetic-trifluoroacetic mixed anhydride and BF(3)·OEt(2) at room temperature, followed by the addition of a nucleophile (H(2)O, MeOH or KSeCN). In the case of 22-hydroxyfurostans, they can be transformed to pseudosapogenins by treatment with p-toluensulfonic acid.
