The impact of internet pornography addiction on brain function: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

INTRODUCTION: There is extensive awareness of internet pornography addiction. It not only affects the mental health of adolescents but also promotes criminal activity. However, the impact of internet pornography addiction on functional in the brain remains unclear. METHODS: 16 healthy college students and five college students with severe internet pornography addiction were invited to participate in the experiment and watch a pornographic video. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure the dynamic changes in hemoglobin in the brain during a 10 min session of viewing i

Phonemic fluency and brain connectivity in age-related macular degeneration: a pilot study.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in developed nations, has been associated with poor performance on tests of phonemic fluency. This pilot study sought to (1) characterize the relationship between phonemic fluency and resting-state functional brain connectivity in AMD patients and (2) determine whether regional connections associated with phonemic fluency in AMD patients were similarly linked to phonemic fluency in healthy participants. Behavior-based connectivity analysis was applied to resting-state, functional magnetic resonance imaging data from seven p

Diffusion tensor tractography analysis of the corpus callosum fibers in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Involvement of the corpus callosum (CC) is reported to be a consistent feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We examined the CC pathology using diffusion tensor tractography analysis to identify precisely which fiber bundles are involved in ALS. METHODS: Diffusion tensor imaging was performed in 14 sporadic ALS patients and 16 age-matched healthy controls. Whole brain tractography was performed using the multiple-region of interest (ROI) approach, and CC fiber bundles were extracted in two ways based on functional and structural relevance: (i) cortical ROI se

Neural systems supporting timing and chronometric counting: an FMRI study.

At least two strategies are available to humans for estimating multisecond intervals. One depends on an interval timing system that is common to many species. The other is the language-based strategy of chronometric counting. These two strategies are easily distinguished by the psychophysical properties of their behavioral correlates: counting supports substantially more precise estimates than are possible using the more general interval timing system. The present study investigates the neural systems that underlie the execution of these different strategies. Eighteen adults reproduced a 16-s

Functional neuroanatomy of visual object naming: a PET study.

BACKGROUND: The ability to name objects depends partly on visual perception. We used positron emission tomography (PET) to measure activity-related changes in regional cerebral blood flow (r-CBF) in order to identify regions of the brain activated during visual object naming. METHODS: Four right-handed volunteers were recruited. Following an intravenous injection of 15O-labeled water, r-CBF was measured during visual object naming, counting numbers, and resting. PET and MRI images were coregistered, the size of the brain was proportionally adjusted in each axis to Talairach's and Tournoux's a

COVID-19 pleiotropy with brain imaging-derived phenotypes highlights novel insights into the biology shared between immune function and brain variation.

This study investigated the pleiotropy and the underlying biology linking COVID-19 outcomes to brain variation, leveraging genome-wide data from the COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative and multimodal brain-wide magnetic resonance imaging from the UK Biobank. In our analyses, COVID-19 outcomes showed evidence of polygenic overlap with respect to 11 imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) related to brain structure (e.g. parahippocampal and entorhinal cortical thickness) and connectivity (e.g. Broca's area and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). Among these, the genetic liability to COVID-19 hospitalizatio

Alterations in resting-state neural networks in subacute non-fluent aphasia after stroke: a fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke aphasia is a prevalent and often disabling language impairment. Despite its high incidence, the neuropathological mechanisms underlying post-stroke aphasia and the neural substrates of functional recovery remain poorly understood. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for developing targeted rehabilitation strategies. METHODS: In this study, we used fNIRS to collect resting-state data from three participant groups. Pearson correlation was applied to compute whole-brain functional connectivity, followed by graph theory analysis to compare global and regional netwo

Decoding depression: How DLPFC and SMA mediate stress perception's role in mental health?

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental disorder that significantly impacts global well-being. Although stress is a major contributor to depression, not all stress leads to depressive outcomes due to differences in stress perception. Understanding the neural mechanisms of stress perception may help identify biomarkers for targeted interventions to alleviate stress-related depression. METHODS: This study included 113 participants. Each participant completed a Verbal Fluency Task (VFT) while undergoing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor brain activity. Oxyhemoglobin (Oxy

Simultaneous fMRI and tDCS for Enhancing Training of Flight Tasks.

There is a gap in our understanding of how best to apply transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance learning in complex, realistic, and multifocus tasks such as aviation. Our goal is to assess the effects of tDCS and feedback training on task performance, brain activity, and connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Experienced glider pilots were recruited to perform a one-day, three-run flight-simulator task involving varying difficulty conditions and a secondary auditory task, mimicking real flight requirements. The stimulation group (versus sham) receiv

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone gene expression during the rat estrous cycle: effects of pentobarbital and ovarian steroids.

Although hypothalamic GnRH release is known to be modulated by neural and hormonal factors, the relationship between altered GnRH secretion and GnRH synthesis remains unclear. In an attempt to address this question, we examined GnRH gene expression in the rat hypothalamus using in situ hybridization histochemistry. An 25S-labeled antisense RNA probe was used to identify neurons expressing GnRH mRNA in an area that included the diagonal band of Broca, the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis, and the preoptic area. The number of GnRH mRNA-expressing cells was determined at various times

Prosencephalic afferents to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus.

The afferent projections from the prosencephalon to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) were studied in the cat by use of the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Cortical and subcortical prosencephalic structures project bilaterally to the MD. The cortical afferents originate mainly in the ipsilateral prefrontal cortex. The premotor, prelimbic, anterior limbic, and insular agranular cortical areas are also origins of consistent projections to the MD. The motor cortex, insular granular area, and some other cortical association areas may be the source of cortical co

Aromatase in axonal processes of early postnatal hypothalamic and limbic areas including the cingulate cortex.

It has been shown that sexual dimorphic morphology of certain hypothalamic and limbic areas underlie gender-specific sexual behavior and neuroendocrine mechanisms. The key role played by locally formed estrogen in these developmental events has been revealed during a critical perinatal period. In this study, we aimed to document the presence of estrogen-synthetase (aromatase)-immunoreactive elements in the involved limbic system and hypothalamus of the developing rat brain. On postnatal day 5, animals of both sexes were perfusion-fixed, and sections from the forebrain and hypothalamus were imm

The human cerebro-cerebellar system: its computing, cognitive, and language skills.

In this review of the human cerebro-cerebellar system, the focus is on the possible contributions of the cerebellum to cognitive and language functions. The role of the cerebellum in these human functions has tended to be obscured by the traditional preoccupation with the motor functions of the cerebellum, which have been widely observed in other vertebrates as well. In the human brain, some phylogenetically new parts evolved and enlarged in the cerebellum, concomitantly with the enlargement of association areas in the cerebral cortex. Anatomical evidence and behavioral evidence combine to sug

The inferior frontal sulcus in the chimpanzee brain: morphological examination and association with oro-facial communication.

There has been considerable interest in the neuroanatomical homologue of Broca's region in nonhuman primates, particularly in our phylogenetically closest relative the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), to further our understanding of the evolution of language in hominins. The inferior frontal sulcus (ifs) is a critical landmark below which lie language production areas in the language-dominant hemisphere of the human brain, and its homologue is found in the chimpanzee brain. The present study examined the variability in the morphology of the ifs in 73 chimpanzee brains (ie 146 hemispheres). Examin

Category specific spatial dissociations of parallel processes underlying visual naming.

The constituent elements and dynamics of the networks responsible for word production are a central issue to understanding human language. Of particular interest is their dependency on lexical category, particularly the possible segregation of nouns and verbs into separate processing streams. We applied a novel mixed-effects, multilevel analysis to electrocorticographic data collected from 19 patients (1942 electrodes) to examine the activity of broadly disseminated cortical networks during the retrieval of distinct lexical categories. This approach was designed to overcome the issues of spars

Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with speech and language training in early aphasia rehabilitation: a randomized double-blind controlled pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Functional neuroimaging studies with poststroke aphasia patients have shown increased activation of the unaffected hemisphere, which hypothetically reflects a maladaptive strategy of brain reorganization. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) inhibiting the right-hemisphere homologue of Broca's area improves language restitution if combined with speech/language therapy. METHODS: Forty aphasic patients during the subacute phase of ischemic stroke were randomized to a 3-week aphasia rehabilitation protocol in combination with real or

Specific language impairment is not specific to language: the procedural deficit hypothesis.

Specific Language Impairment (SLI) has been explained by two broad classes of hypotheses, which posit either a deficit specific to grammar, or a non-linguistic processing impairment. Here we advance an alternative perspective. According to the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis (PDH), SLI can be largely explained by the abnormal development of brain structures that constitute the procedural memory system. This system, which is composed of a network of inter-connected structures rooted in frontal/basal-ganglia circuits, subserves the learning and execution of motor and cognitive skills. Crucially, r

[Neuropsychological analysis in 2 cases of infarction in the left precentral gyrus--with special reference to apraxia of speech and agraphia].

It remains controversial whether agraphia can coexist in a case with apraxia of speech, and whether an apraxia of speech can be classified into a category of aphasia. We examined the presence of agraphia in 2 right-handed patients of apraxia of speech. Case 1 of mild agraphia showed an infarcted lesion in the left precentral gyrus extending to the neighboring white matter, which involving the arcuate fasciculus on MRI. Positron emission tomography (PET) indicated decrease of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) in the infarcted lesion, but no decrease of CBF

Music Therapy Modulates Abnormal Brain Networks and Alleviates Anxiety Symptoms in University Students: An fNIRS Study.

Anxiety's prevalence is increasing, making it a widespread mental health concern. However, scale-based diagnostic methods have limitations. Music therapy helps regulate emotions and alleviate anxiety symptoms. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers a novel approach to diagnosing mental disorders by measuring changes in the concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HbR) in the superficial layers of the brain, thereby reflecting brain activation. This is the first study to use fNIRS to examine the impact of music therapy on anxiety. fNIRS was used t

Shifting of global aphasia to Wernicke's aphasia in a patient with intact motor function: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Global aphasia without hemiparesis (GAWH) is a rare stroke syndrome characterized by the dissociation of motor and language functions. Here, we present a case of GAWH with the patient later regaining speech fluency. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department immediately after an episode of syncope. On arrival, we noted his global aphasia but without any focal neurologic signs. Computed tomography (CT) perfusion scans showed a large hypodense region over his left perisylvian area. Under the impression of acute ischaemic stroke, he received recombi
