Spiral-medial butterfly fractures (AO-12-B1) in distal diaphysis of humerus with rotational forces: preliminary results of open reduction and plate-screw fixation.

OBJECTIVE: Humerus shaft fractures are frequent injuries in orthopedic practice and generally occurs with direct and indirect traumas. While the most of these fractures can be managed with conservative methods, in some situations surgery is needed. The aim of this study is to define a different mechanism and treatment result of  humerus spiral fractures with medial butterfly fragment (AO-12-B1). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2010 and 2013, 11 patients who had undergone surgery for spiral humerus shaft fracture with medial large butterfly fragment (AO type 12-B1) resulting from a motor vehicle

Interplay among tetrahedrane, butterfly diradical, and planar rhombus structures in the chemistry of the binuclear iron carbonyl phosphinidene complexes Fe2(CO)6(PX)2.

Density functional theory studies on a series of Fe2(CO)6(PX)2 derivatives show the tetrahedrane to be the most stable for the alkyl (X = Me, tBu), P-H (X = H), and chloro (X = Cl) derivatives. However, butterfly diradical and planar rhombus structures are found to be more stable than tetrahedranes for the amino (X = NH2, NMe2, and NiPr2) and aryloxy (R = 2,6-tBu2-4-Me-C6H2O) derivatives. For the chloro (X = Cl) and methoxy (X = OMe) derivatives energetically accessible bishomotetrahedrane Fe2(CO)6P2(mu-X)2 isomers are observed in which the X substituents on the phosphorus atoms interact with

VOC Characterization of Byasa hedistus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) and Its Visual and Olfactory Responses during Foraging and Courtship.

Color and odor are crucial cues for butterflies during foraging and courtship. While most sexual dimorphic butterflies rely more on vision, our understanding of how butterflies with similar coloration use different signals remains limited. This study investigated the visual and olfactory behavioral responses of the similarly colored butterfly Byasa hedistus during foraging and courtship. While visiting artificial flowers of different colors, we found that B. hedistus exhibits an innate color preference, with a sequence of preferences for red, purple, and blue. The frequency of flower visits by

[Caterpillar dermatitis. An increasing dermatologic problem in warmer regions of Germany].

Caterpillar dermatitis or lepidopterism (Lepidoptera = butterflies) is a toxic-irritant, or rarely allergic, reaction triggered by the release of histamine, thaumetopoein and other kinins from the hairs of butterflies and caterpillars. In Central Europe, the two main causes of caterpillar dermatitis are the oak and pine processionary caterpillar. In addition to cutaneous reactions, patients may develop conjunctivitis, bronchitis and even anaphylactic reactions. We describe the cutaneous aspects of caterpillar dermatitis based on two case reports.

First Report on Metal Contamination and Associated Human Health Risks in the Smooth Butterfly Ray Gymnura cf. micrura (Myliobatiformes: Gymnuridae) from the Brazilian Amazon Coast.

Metal accumulation in batoids reflects both environmental exposure and physiological regulation, although studies concerning this group are still scarce. The Smooth butterfly ray (Gymnura cf. micrura) is consumed in northeastern Brazil, yet information on metal contamination and associated health risks are unavailable to date. This study assessed metal and metalloid concentrations, muscle metallothionein (MT) levels, elemental associations, and human health risks in specimens collected off the Maranhão coast. No significant sex-related differences were observed in element concentrations or MT

Pure-Blue Emission at the Edge of the CIE Diagram: Carbazolyl NHC Platinum Butterfly Complexes with Near-Unity Quantum Yield and Their Application in Organic Light-Emitting Diodes.

The Pt butterfly complexes, [{Pt(Cz-C∧C*im)(μ-Rpz)}2] (HC∧C* = 1-(4-(carbazolyl) phenyl)-3-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-ylidene; Rpz = pyrazolate (pz) 1; 4-fluoropyrazolate (4-Fpz) 2; 4-trifluoromethylpyrazolate (4-CF3pz) 3), with a carbazole-appended cyclometalated N-heterocyclic carbene (Cz-C∧C*im) in the wings, were prepared and characterized. DFT and TD-DFT calculations show the prevalent 1/3ILCT character of the lowest-energy absorptions and emissions of these phosphorescent complexes. In 5 wt % PMMA films, complexes 1-3 exhibit blue phosphorescence with photoluminescence quantum yield up to 0.99

EGG HATCHING, MIRACIDIAL MORPHOLOGY, AND PATHOLOGY OF CHIMAEROHEMECIDAE SP. (DIGENEA) INFECTING GILL OF SMOOTH BUTTERFLY RAYS, GYMNURA MICRURA, FROM MOBILE BAY, GULF OF AMERICA.

While searching for monocotylid (Monogenoidea) and blood fluke infections in smooth butterfly rays captured in Mobile Bay (north-central Gulf of America), we observed hatching blood fluke eggs (Chimaerohemecidae sp.) embedded in the gill epithelium. Eggs presented as large, nearly grossly visible, opaque white or slightly tan, and irregularly shaped oblong masses ∼3 mm in maximum length and having ∼172 eggs per mass. Wet-mounting allowed excision of live eggs, and examination with a compound microscope revealed that each egg had an actively gyrating and ciliated miracidium. Unhatched miracidia

Water-Stable MIL-MOFs Developed Through a Novel Sacrifice-Protection Strategy Inspired by Butterfly Wings' Scales for Long-Term Turn-On Fluorescence Sensing of H2S.

Metal-organic frameworks, which are the desired candidates for biosensing application due to their tunable properties, are significantly hindered by their rapid degradation in aqueous solutions, as well as the loss of their inherent fluorescence. Most studies aim to improve the hydrophobicity of materials by modifying their contact angle, thereby enhancing water stability. However, water droplets poorly adhere to the surface of hydrophobic materials, limiting their application for direct contact and detection in aqueous environments. Drawing inspiration from the sacrificial protection mechanis

Role of methyl salicylate on oviposition deterrence in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plants attacked by herbivores have evolved different strategies that fend off their enemies. Insect eggs deposited on leaves have been shown to inhibit further oviposition through visual or chemical cues. In some plant species, the volatile methyl salicylate (MeSA) repels gravid insects but whether it plays the same role in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana is currently unknown. Here we showed that Pieris brassicae butterflies laid fewer eggs on Arabidopsis plants that were next to a MeSA dispenser or on plants with constitutively high MeSA emission than on control plants. Surprisingly, t

Exploring the mysterious behavior of the critically endangered South African Wolkberg Zulu butterfly (Alaena margaritacea) using micro-CT scanning and morphological analysis (Lycaenidae: Liptenini).

BACKGROUND: The Critically Endangered endemic Wolkberg Zulu butterfly (Lycaenidae: Alaena margaritacea Eltringham, 1929) is known from only two colonies in the Wolkberg mountain range in north-east South Africa. An unusual behavior of this species was reported in 2020: the female climbs and criss-crosses grass blades while rubbing her abdomen against them and curling her abdomen. The function of the unusual behavior is unknown, but it might attract males by depositing a pheromone. Although long-range female sex pheromones are rare in butterflies (Papilionoidea), this conjecture is supported by

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly Revisited: A Fatal Case of Locked-in Syndrome in a Man With Epstein-Barr Virus-Positive Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Not Otherwise Specified.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a rare variant of DLBCL. The natural history of this subtype is poorly understood. Incomplete literature in the era of rituximab suggests that patients with EBV-positive DLBCL have similar outcomes to patients with EBV-negative DLBCL when treated with rituximab and anthracycline-based chemotherapy regimens; however, there are few prospective studies on this subtype and little is known about the risk of central nervous system (CNS) relapse with EBV-positive DLBCL. Herein, we describe the case of a 64-year-old man who pre

Five new species of Acanthobothrium (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) from the long-tailed butterfly ray, Gymnura cf. poecilura (Elasmobranchii: Gymnuridae), from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.

Five new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 are described from Gymnura cf. poecilura from the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf. They all belong to the Category 1 and can be differentiated from all congeners by a combination of characters, including marginal lappets on the bothridial rim, the lack of spinitrich microtriches on the proximal bothridial surfaces, the position of the genital pore in the posterior one fifth of the proglottid, the direction of the cirrus sac parallel and clinging to the ovarian lobe, the lack of post-vaginal testes, and the interruption of the vitelline follicle

Atherogenic impact of lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase and its relation to cholesterol esterification rate in HDL (FER(HDL)) and AIP [log(TG/HDL-C)] biomarkers: the butterfly effect?

The atherogenic impact and functional capacity of LCAT was studied and discussed over a half century. This review aims to clarify the key points that may affect the final decision on whether LCAT is an anti-atherogenic or atherogenic factor. There are three main processes involving the efflux of free cholesterol from peripheral cells, LCAT action in intravascular pool where cholesterol esterification rate is under the control of HDL, LDL and VLDL subpopulations, and finally the destination of newly produced cholesteryl esters either to the catabolism in liver or to a futile cycle with apoB lip

"Black butterfly" sign on T2*-weighted and susceptibility-weighted imaging: A novel finding of chronic venous congestion of the brain stem and spinal cord associated with dural arteriovenous fistulas.

A dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) with spinal perimedullary venous drainage can cause progressive myelopathy, and it is sometimes incorrectly diagnosed as another spinal cord disease. Here we report the cases of three individuals with a DAVF (one craniocervical junction DAVF and two tentorial DAVFs) with progressive myelopathy showing unique magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings. MR T2*WI or susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) demonstrated symmetrical dark signal intensity lesions predominantly in the dorsal aspect of medulla and the central gray matter of cervical spinal cord that sho

Case Report: Reintroduction of winged infusion sets to needle syringe programs - advancing equity in harm reduction.

BACKGROUND: In January 2023, following a 20-year ban, the New South Wales (NSW) Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) Guidelines permitted NSPs to provide winged infusion sets ('butterflies') and larger-volume syringes ('barrels') commonly used for injecting methadone liquid intravenously. APPROACH: The Kirketon Road Centre (KRC) integrated the distribution of 'butterflies and barrels' (referred to as 'butterfly packs') into its service delivery in April 2023 and developed resources in collaboration with the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) and the NSW Users and AIDS Associatio

Pruritic dermatitis on an oil tanker after a visit to French Guyana.

A 40-year-old seaman presented to our emergency department with a severe pruritic skin reaction on his limbs and neck after visiting French Guyana on an oil tanker. Twenty crewmembers had had the same complaints. The harbor in French Guyana had been devastated by an invasion of Hylesia metabus, a moth that can cause a serious dermatitis due to contact with the hairs (setae) of the female moth. Complaints due to contact with caterpillars, butterflies, or moths is called lepidopterism. The complaints are self-limiting, and treatment is symptomatic. Due to the increasing amount of travelers and t

The Pieris climate accords: how climate change shapes molecular interactions between the butterfly Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) and its host plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicales: Brassicaceae).

Global temperatures are projected to rise by approximately 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2050, driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Such rapid climate change is predicted to drive correspondingly rapid change in animals and plants, particularly those that humans depend on for food and security. Here, we investigated how increased temperature and CO2 may affect herbivore-host plant interactions using controlled experiments with a widespread agricultural pest, the cabbage white butterfly Pieris rapae, and a model host plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Pieris rapae and A. thaliana w

Flower-rich and diverse road verges support pollinators, but traffic speed limits the ecological benefits across Europe.

Roads are vital for human societies, yet they can also have negative impacts on the ecological communities that live in close proximity to them. Insect pollinators, which nest and forage in road verges running alongside roads, are a group of particular importance. These verges may act as an "ecological trap," drawing insect pollinators into contact with traffic, increasing the risk of pollinator-traffic collisions. Spanning six European regions, we evaluated the complex relationships between traffic, road verge floral composition, and surrounding land use to understand how these factors influe
