Antibacterial activity of hot aqueous and methanolic extracts prepared from six plants (Terminallia chebula, Terminallia bellerica, Phyllanthus emblica, Punica granatum, Lawsonia alba and Mikania micrantha) used in traditional folk medicines of India were screened against five pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 2940, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441, Escherichia coli MTCC 739, Proteus vulgaris MTCC 426 and Enterobacter aerogenes MTCC 111). The purpose of the study was to compare the efficacy of cefaclor with that of penicillin V potassium (penicillin) in patients with Group A streptococcal pharyngitis. A second part of our continuous investigation on the clinical effect of cefaclor (CCL) against urinary tract infections was reported herein. CCL, a daily dose of 0.75 g t.i.d., has been applied for the treatment of (I) 76 cases with the uncomplicated acute cystitis in the women, and (II) 55 cases with the complicated. Rates of effectiveness were obtained 98.7% in (I) and 60% in (II). Side effects were noted in 13 cases out of total 150 cases.

We present the case of a 41-year-old Australian woman with a 3-day history of fevers and migratory polyarthritis. Three weeks prior she had been treated by her GP with phenoxymethylpenicillin for acute tonsillitis. Examination confirmed synovitis. Systemic assessment including cardiovascular, neurological and skin examination was unremarkable. Abnormal investigations included a leucocytosis with neutrophilia, C-reactive peptide of 116 mg/L, erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 103 mm/hour and acute transaminitis. The antistreptolysin O titre was 304 IU, which increased to 1,250 IU after 2 weeks.

We report an uncommon case of a cutaneous infection with Mycobacterium fortuitum arising in a new tattoo. In order to compound a new drug combination against canine otitis externa (OE), 515 dogs affected with OE were subjected to physical examination and microbiological analysis of their ear exudates.
