Relationship among latitude, climate, season and self-reported mood in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Many researchers have analyzed seasonal variation in hospital admissions for bipolar disorder with inconsistent results. We investigated if a seasonal pattern was present in daily self-reported daily mood ratings from patients living in five climate zones in the northern and southern hemispheres. We also investigated the influence of latitude and seasonal climate variables on mood. METHOD: 360 patients who were receiving treatment as usual recorded mood daily (59,422 total days of data). Both the percentage of days depressed and hypomanic/manic, and the episodes of depression and m

Freezing precipitation has major consequences for ground and air transportation, the health of citizens, and power networks. Previous studies using coarse resolution climate models have shown a northward migration of freezing rain in the future. Increased model resolution can better define local topography leading to improved representation of conditions that are favorable for freezing rain. The goal of this study is to examine the climatology and characteristics of future freezing rain events using very-high resolution climate simulations. Historical and pseudo-global warming simulations with

Climate Change and Diarrhoeal Disease Burdens in the Gaza Strip, Palestine: Health Impacts of 1.5 °C and 2 °C Global Warming Scenarios.

The Gaza Strip is one of the world’s most fragile states and faces substantial public health and development challenges. Climate change is intensifying existing environmental problems, including increased water stress. We provide the first published assessment of climate impacts on diarrhoeal disease in Gaza and project future health burdens under climate change scenarios. Over 1 million acute diarrhoea cases presenting to health facilities during 2009−2020 were linked to weekly temperature and rainfall data and associations assessed using time-series regression analysis employing distributed

Climate Change and Phenology: Empoasca fabae (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) Migration and Severity of Impact.

Climate change can benefit individual species, but when pest species are enhanced by warmer temperatures agricultural productivity may be placed at greater risk. We analyzed the effects of temperature anomaly on arrival date and infestation severity of potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae Harris, a classic new world long distance migrant, and a significant pest in several agricultural crops. We compiled E. fabae arrival dates and infestation severity data at different states in USA from existing literature reviews and agricultural extension records from 1951-2012, and examined the influence of te

Lyme Disease Risks in Europe under Multiple Uncertain Drivers of Change.

BACKGROUND: Debates over whether climate change could lead to the amplification of Lyme disease (LD) risk in the future have received much attention. Although recent large-scale disease mapping studies project an overall increase in Lyme disease risk as the climate warms, such conclusions are based on climate-driven models in which other drivers of change, such as land-use/cover and host population distribution, are less considered. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives were to project the likely future ecological risk patterns of LD in Europe under different assumptions about future socioeconomic

Biogeographic climate sensitivity controls Earth system response to large igneous province carbon degassing.

Periods of large igneous province (LIP) magmatism have shaped Earth's biological and climatic history, causing major climatic shifts and biological reorganizations. The vegetation response to LIP-induced perturbations may affect the efficiency of the carbon-climate regulation system and the post-LIP climate evolution. Using an eco-evolutionary vegetation model, we demonstrate here that the vegetation's climate adaptation capacity, through biological evolution and geographic dispersal, is a major determinant of the severity and longevity of LIP-induced hyperthermals and can promote the emergenc

Causality from long-lived radiative forcings to the climate trend.

In our study, we present a purely statistical observations-based model-free analysis that provides evidence about Granger causality (GC) from long-lived radiative forcings (LLRFs) to the climate trend (CT). This relies on having locally ordered breaks in the slopes of the trend functions of LLRF and the CT, with the break for LLRF occurring before that of the CT and with the slope changes being of the same sign. The empirical evidence indicates that these conditions are satisfied empirically using standard global surface temperature series and an aggregate measure of LLRF (carbon dioxide, nitr

An expanding human footprint drives escalating human-elephant conflict across a transboundary African landscape through 2085.

Rapid land-use change is compressing the space between people and wildlife at an unprecedented pace, elevating concerns of conflict between people and keystone megafauna such as the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana). However, the underlying drivers of human-elephant conflict (HEC) are often inferred but not causally identified, and forecasting under future scenarios is limited, restricting our ability to anticipate where and why conflict will intensify. Using a dataset on conflict events from 2004 to 2020 across a transboundary landscape in Southern Africa, we integrate causal infe

Farm-type differences in climate change adaptation intentions.

Agriculture is one of the most sensitive sectors towards climate change. Therefore, farmers are forced to adapt their production to climatic changes. To understand farmers' adaptation behavior, it is important to acknowledge heterogeneity among farmers that affects their management decisions and adjustments to production practices. We conducted a latent class analysis of farmers in southern Germany to identify distinct farmer classes with respect to climate change adaptation intentions. The four identified farmer groups showed varying levels of interest in climate change adaptation. Older farm

Methane trapping in permafrost soils: a biogeochemical dataset across Alaskan boreal-Arctic gradient.

Permafrost soils store vast amounts of organic carbon, and their thawing due to climate warming accelerates the release of carbon as methane and carbon dioxide, exacerbating global climate change. Understanding the distribution of greenhouse gases trapped in these soils and predicting their behavior upon thawing is essential for accurately modeling climate feedbacks. This study presents an integrated biogeochemical and microbial dataset from ~1.8 m deep soil cores collected across a 970 km latitudinal gradient in Alaskan permafrost regions, spanning boreal forest and Arctic tundra biomes. BACKGROUND: Newly graduated psychiatric nurses often experience challenges during the transition to professional practice, which may influence their professional commitment. Although workplace anxiety represents an important psychological factor, organizational factors such as spiritual leadership and error management climate may also contribute to variations in professional commitment. However, the relationships among these psychological and organizational factors remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of workplace anxiety, spiritual leadership, and error ma

Analysis of Lassa Fever Incidence in Nigeria Demonstrates a Clear Climate-Disease Interaction.

Lassa fever remains a major public health concern in Nigeria, where climatic variability, ecological dynamics, and socio-behavioral factors combine to influence transmission patterns. This review synthesizes current evidence on how atmospheric conditions shape Lassa fever incidence through their effects on ecosystems, rodent reservoirs, and human exposure pathways. Drawing on studies in epidemiology, disease ecology, climate science and remote sensing, the review highlights that temperature, rainfall, humidity, vegetation change and large-scale climatic oscillations all contribute to fluctuati

Climate warming increases global oceanic dimethyl sulfide emissions.

Oceanic dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is the largest natural source of atmospheric sulfur. DMS is biologically produced in seawater and emitted into the atmosphere, where its oxidation products contribute to aerosol formation with consequences for cloud albedo and the Earth's radiative budget and climate. Climate model projections of how DMS emissions change with global warming are largely uncertain, even contradictory. Here, we use machine-learning models trained with biome-resolved global observations to simulate seawater DMS concentrations (1850 to 2100) using physico-chemical and biological predi

Climate change and risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis: an artificial neural network-based approach.

Climate change significantly impacts the prevalence of vector-borne diseases, including cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). This study evaluates the impact of climate change on CL by artificial neural network (ANN) in the central part of Iran. The Gamma was employed to estimate the least mean squared error and optimal lag time for predictions. General circulation models (GCMs) are essential tools for simulating future climate conditions with two pathways: RCP2.6 and RCP8.5. ANNs were used to simulate the various impacts of climate change on CL infection. We revealed that temperature and precipitatio

Increasing boreal fires reduce future global warming and sea ice loss.

Biomass burning can affect climate via the emission of aerosols and their subsequent impact on radiation, cloud microphysics, and surface and atmospheric albedo. Biomass burning emissions (BBEs) over the boreal region have strongly increased during the last decade and are expected to continue increasing as the climate warms. Climate models simulate aerosol processes, yet historical and future Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) simulations have no active fire component, and BBEs are prescribed as external forcings. Here, we show that CMIP6 used future boreal BBEs scenarios with unreal

Contribution of climate change to the spatial expansion of West Nile virus in Europe.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen in Europe where it represents a new public health threat. While climate change has been cited as a potential driver of its spatial expansion on the continent, a formal evaluation of this causal relationship is lacking. Here, we investigate the extent to which WNV spatial expansion in Europe can be attributed to climate change while accounting for other direct human influences such as land-use and human population changes. To this end, we trained ecological niche models to predict the risk of local WNV circulation leading to human cas
