The impact of biogas residual biochar (BRB) on the humification and carbon balance process of co-composting of hog slurry (HGS) and wheat straw (WTS) was examined. The 50-day humification process was significantly enhanced by the addition of BRB, particular of 5% BRB, as indicated by the relatively higher humic acid content (67.28 g/kg) and humification ratio (2.31) than other treatments. The carbon balance calculation indicated that although BRB addition increased 22.16-46.77% of C lost in form of CO2-C, but the 5% BRB treatment showed relatively higher C fixation and lower C loss than other

The effect of microbial agents (MA) on hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions in the compost is still a controversial issue. This study examined the effects and microbial mechanisms of MA on H2S emissions during the composting of kitchen waste. The results showed that MA addition can promote sulfur conversion to elevate H2S emissions by approximately 1.6 ∼ 2.8 times. Structural equations demonstrated that microbial community structure was the dominant driver on H2S emissions. Agents reshaped the compost microbiome, showing more microorganisms participated in sulfur conversion, and enhanced the conne

This study aims to explore the succession of microbes carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the relationship between heavy metal speciation and ARGs via Fenton-like reaction during composting. The results indicated that the passivation of Cu and Ni was more prominent, and the Fenton-like reaction promoted exceptionally the passivation of Zn, Ni and Mn. The removals of macrolides-lincosamids-streptogramins (MLS), aminoglycoside and tetracycline resistance genes were induced with the composting process, but the relative abundance of bacitracin resistance genes increased. Additionally, Pro

Little is known about the effect of adding crude glycerin (CG) as a carbon source during the composting of agro-industrial residues, such as those generated in the swine production chain, especially concerning the impact on organic matter humification. Therefore, the aim of this work was to study the effect of adding crude glycerin during the composting of organic swine waste, using appropriate analyses to determine the degree of maturation of the organic material. The experiment was performed using composters constructed from pallets. The variables considered were temperature, mass, volume, o

Aerobic composting has been used for a long time for bioconversion of manure wastes, however, its application has been limited due to slow transition of organic matters and influence of heavy metals and antibiotics residues. Compost with lime addition can speed up the composting process, while its effects on the evolution of organic matters, heavy metals and antibiotics need to be further investigated. In this research, the effects of lime amendment on organic substances changes was assessed by the spectroscopic characteristics. Besides, chlortetracycline (CTC) removal and Cu, Zn chemical spec

While manure has been used as nutrient-rich fertilizer for centuries, anaerobic digestion (AD) of manure has only been recognized recently as a promising renewable energy source for producing methane-rich biogas. Various forms of AD have been evaluated for the removal of manure contaminants, such as antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), hormones, and pesticides that pose risks to human health and the environment. Increasing demand for cleaner energy prompts examination of the fate of manure contaminants in conventional and advanced AD techniques. This review reveals that remov

This study was aimed to examine the response of Ca-bentonite (CB) amendment to improve the sewage sludge (SS) composting along with wheat straw (WS) as bulking agent. Five treatments (SS + WS) were mixed with or without blending of discrepant concentration of CB (2%, 4%, 6%, and 10%), respectively, and without CB added treatment applied as the control. The results showed that compared to control and 2%CB blended treatments, while the 6-10%CB -amended treatment indicated maximum enzymatic activities with the composting progress and highest organic matter degradation and loss. The amendment of 6

The reducing capacity (RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity (ETC) of compost-derived fulvic acid (FA) are closely related to its molecular structure and may influence Fe biogeochemical cycling. However, how these redox functions evolve with FA structure during composting remains poorly understood. Using Fe(III) as a prevalent environmental electron acceptor, this study innovatively quantified the reducing capacity(RC) and microbially mediated electron-transfer capacity(ETC) of FA throughout a full-scale municipal solid waste (MSW) composting process and linked these function

Urbanization associated construction operations, while necessary for infrastructure development, can result in highly disturbed and intentionally, or inadvertently, compacted soils. Compost incorporation into these disturbed soils is a relatively simple intervention that may alleviate compaction and increase important post-construction soil physical properties such as water infiltration capacity. Results in the literature about compost amendment effects on soil hydraulic properties are mixed, and compost experiments rarely test more than a single amendment rate or type concurrently, often with

The discovery of plant biostimulants (PBs) in sewage sludge offers a promising avenue for biosolids valorization. Here, the study investigates how two mineral additives, including 2-line ferrihydrite (a disordered iron oxide) and disordered birnessite (a manganese oxide), modulate microbial activity and molecular pathways to enhance PB production during aerobic sludge composting. Application of 2-line ferrihydrite significantly promotes the synthesis of growth-promoting PBs, including arginine, valine, decanoic acid, and indoleacetic acid (IAA), while disordered birnessite primarily enhances r

Offensive odors from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are caused by volatile inorganic compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as toluene. To treat these pollutants, biofiltration is an effective and economical technology used worldwide due to its low investment and environmental impact. In this work, a laboratory-scale prototype biofilter unit for the simultaneous biofiltration of hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and toluene was evaluated by simulating the emission concentrations of the El Salitre WWTP Bogotá, Colombia, using a compost of chicken

Fire-extinguishing powders (FEPs) are constituted by an inner mineral core of (NH4)H2PO4 and (NH4)2SO4 salts (>95 %, by weight) externally coated with Si-based additives, which make problematic reuse after their service life has expired (36 months). This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using the composting process as an environmentally friendly strategy to lyse the external coating and recycle this nutrient-rich solid waste for replacement of inorganic fertilization in soilless cultivation of horticultural crops. The tannery industries generate a solid waste known as tannery sludge, which is composed of organic and inorganic compounds, mainly chromium (Cr). When Cr is not removed from the tannery sludge, this solid waste is metal-rich and its application could affect the soil microorganisms. Alternatively, the composting of the tannery sludge can contribute to decreasing the concentration of Cr in the composted tannery sludge (CTS). However, in some cases, the concentration of Cr remains high in the CTS. During the last 10 years, the Cr-rich CTS has been successively applied in the soil, and its effect

For food packaging, plastic materials display large appeal, mostly due to their versatility, mechanical, optical and barrier properties. However, they play an important role in environmental concerns and waste management issue. Compostable bioplastics represent alternative materials designed for a lower environmental impact. In this work, a biobased compostable packaging, constituted by polylactide (PLA) trays and NatureFlex™ film, was evaluated for fresh-cut cherry tomato. A comparative analysis was accomplished using traditional packaging materials, that is, polyethylene terephtalate (PET) t

Biofiltration offers an efficient and economical alternative for the elimination of offensive odors caused by hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds. Considering that packing materials affect the performance and represent the main installation cost, the purpose of this work was to evaluate the biofiltration of H2S and NH3 comparing three composted mixtures made from chicken manure and lignocellulosic residues (pruning waste, sugarcane bagasse, and rice husk) used as packing material. A range of gas concentrations similar to those of a municipal WWTP was used in the biofiltra

The enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during composting poses a substantial risk to the safe utilization of chicken manure. However, the role of multidrug-resistant plasmid (MRP)-harboring bacteria in ARG dissemination and microbial succession during composting remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the regulatory effects of thermophilic Parageobacillus toebii G12 (G12) on ARG dynamics, as well as its performance under interference from MRP-harboring bacteria. Our results showed that G12 inoculation elevated compost temperature, extended the thermophilic phase

Aerobic composting is a key route for organic-waste valorization, yet product utilization is often constrained by phytotoxicity and low germination index (GI), particularly under oxygen-limited operation. Here, we developed an actionable oxygen-control window (O2 ≥ 10% v/v) to mitigate acetate-associated GI inhibition by integrating process monitoring with inhibitor profiling of GI extracts, metagenomics/metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), and pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity measurements. Three composting modes were implemented to create contrasting oxygen regimes: mechanical composting

Chicken manure following black soldier fly (BSF) biotransformation retains high fermentability potential. Direct application as an organic fertilizer negatively impacts soil quality. This study evaluated the effects of three additives (biochar, humic acid, and tea residue) on humification, greenhouse gas emissions, and microbial mechanisms during BSF manure composting. Research indicates that humic acid accelerates compost humification by increasing substituents on aromatic rings. Biochar and tea residue promoted humification by increasing the proportion of highly aromatic structures. Compared
