Recurrent bradycardia and hypotension after Oral Lacosamide during hospital boarding in the emergency department: A case report.

Lacosamide is a third-generation antiseizure medication that enhances slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels. Although generally well tolerated, it has been associated with cardiac conduction abnormalities, most commonly in the setting of intravenous administration, overdose, or dose escalation. We report a case of a 79-year-old woman with a history of hypertension (treated with losartan and metoprolol), restless legs syndrome (treated with ropinirole), peripheral neuropathy, and seizure disorder who presented to the emergency department with several days of intermittent confusion

Screening of premature ovarian insufficiency associated genes in Hungarian patients with next generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Premature ovarian insuffiency (POI) is one of the main cause behind infertility. The genetic analysis of POI should be part of the clinical diagnostics, as several genes have been implicated in the genetic background of it. The aim of our study was to analyse the genetic background of POI in a Hungarian cohort. METHODS: The age of onset was between 15 and 39 years. All patients had the 46,XX karyotype and they were prescreened for the most frequent POI associated FMR1 premutation. To identify genetic alterations next-generation sequencing (NGS) of 31 genes which were previously as

Pairwise growth competitions identify relative fitness relationships among artemisinin resistant Plasmodium falciparum field isolates.

BACKGROUND: Competitive outcomes between co-infecting malaria parasite lines can reveal fitness disparities in blood stage growth. Blood stage fitness costs often accompany the evolution of drug resistance, with the expectation that relatively fitter parasites will be more likely to spread in populations. With the recent emergence of artemisinin resistance, it is important to understand the relative competitive fitness of the metabolically active asexual blood stage parasites. Genetically distinct drug resistant parasite clones with independently evolved sets of mutations are likely to vary in

An international, multispecialty consensus document on the optimal management of patients with internal carotid artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Severe atherosclerotic internal carotid artery stenosis may progress to complete internal carotid artery occlusion (ICAO). Therefore, ICAO represents an advanced form of carotid artery disease. We sought to investigate the association between ICAO with atherosclerotic disease in other arterial beds and vascular risk factors and to identify the patient implications of the diagnosis of ICAO. METHODS: Using the term "Internal carotid artery occlusion," a search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Embase between 1980 and 2025 revealed 10,588 results. After exclusion of case reports, letter

In-vivo hyperglycemic, antioxidant, histopathological changes, and simultaneous measurement of kaempferol verified by high-performance thin layer chromatography of Setaria italica in streptozotocin -induced diabetic rats.

BACKGROUND: Setaria italica (common name- foxtail, kangni) is one of the major food crops which is prominently cultivated in southern regions of India and in certain regions of Uttar Pradesh. Besides the crop's consumption as a general source of carbohydrate rich cereal, the seeds of the crop are comprised of more fiber. So, it is recommended to add in the dietary supplementation of the diabetic people across the country. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, it intends to investigate the antidiabetic activity and antioxidant activity of S. italica (foxtail millet) seeds in diabetic rats. METHODS: The s

Illustration of Gut-Thyroid Axis in Alcohol Use Disorder: Interplay of Gut Dysfunction, Pro-Inflammatory Responses, and Thyroid Function.

(1) Background: Heavy and chronic alcohol drinking leads to altered gut dysfunction, coupled with a pro-inflammatory state. Thyroid-associated hormones and proteins may be dysregulated by heavy and chronic alcohol intake; however, the mechanism for altered gut-derived changes in thyroid function has not been studied thus far. This study investigates the role of alcohol-induced gut dysfunction and pro-inflammatory cytokine profile in the thyroid function of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). (2) Methods: Male and female AUD patients (n = 44) were divided into Gr.1, patients with normal t

Chemical stabilization of the extracellular matrix attenuates growth of experimentally induced abdominal aorta aneurysms in a large animal model.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present study was to test the safety and efficacy of chemical stabilization of the arterial extracellular matrix as a novel nonoperative treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in a clinically relevant large animal model. METHODS: To achieve matrix stabilization, we used 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose (PGG), a noncytotoxic polyphenolic agent capable of binding to and stabilizing elastin and collagen against the action of degrading enzymes. We first optimized the therapeutic PGG formulation and time of exposure by in vitro testing on porcine aortas using phenol

The neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio predicts all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among U.S. adults with rheumatoid arthritis: results from NHANES 1999-2010.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with systemic inflammation and an elevated risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) is a novel composite biomarker integrating inflammatory and nutritional status, but its prognostic role in RA remains unknown. METHODS: This study included 685 U.S. adults with RA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2010. NPAR was calculated as neutrophil percentage divided by serum albumin and categorized into tertiles (Q1: low, Q2: medium, Q3: high). All-cause and c

Asia-Pacific Consensus Recommendations on X-Linked Hypophosphatemia: Diagnosis, Multidisciplinary Management, and Transition From Pediatric to Adult Care.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare, inherited, multisystem disorder characterized by hypophosphatemia that occurs secondary to renal phosphate wasting. Mutations in PHEX gene (located at Xp22.1) in XLH alter bone mineral metabolism, resulting in diverse skeletal, dental, and other extraskeletal abnormalities that become evident in early childhood and persist into adolescence and adult life. XLH impacts physical function, mobility, and quality of life, and is associated with substantial socioeconomic burden and health care resource utilization. As the burden of illness varies with age, a

Myoclonus status revealing COVID 19 infection.

INTRODUCTION: At the beginning of the coronavirus virus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) was thought to cause mainly respiratory symptoms, largely sparing the brain and the rest of the nervous system. However, as the knowledge about COVID-19 infection progresses and the number of COVID19-related neurological manifestations reports increases, neurotropism and neuroinvasion were finally recognized as major features of the SARS-CoV-2. Neurological manifestations involving the central nervous system are sparse, ranging from headaches, drowsiness,

Erlotinib-induced Perioral Lesions Resembling Scleroderma.

Erlotinib, an epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), is currently used in the therapy of several solid malignancies. This agent has been associated with several dermatological side-effects, the most common being papulo-pustular acneiform rash. Herein we describe a unique skin effect in a patient treated with erlotinib for non-small cell lung cancer. A 68-year-old Caucasian woman presented with complaints of an unusual perioral rash associated with redness and pain. A "feeling of tension" that interfered with chewing was described by the patient. She denied myalg
