Brain-computer-interface-based intervention increases brain functional segregation in cognitively normal older adults.

Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based cognitive training systems have shown promise in enhancing cognitive performance in cognitively normal older adults. However, the brain network changes underlying these behavioural improvements remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we investigated topological alterations in intrinsic brain functional networks following BCI-based training and their behavioural relevance in cognitively normal older adults using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theoretical analysis. Compared to a non-intervention waitlist (WL) group, the i

Cyberchondria and its Relationships with Related Constructs: a Network Analysis.

Cyberchondria denotes repeated online searches for health information that are associated with increasing levels of health anxiety. The aims of this study were to apply network analysis to investigate the extent to which cyberchondria is a distinct construct, ascertain which of the related constructs have the strongest relationships with cyberchondria and investigate whether some of the symptoms of cyberchondria are more central to the construct of cyberchondria. Questionnaires assessing the severity of cyberchondria, health anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms, intolerance of uncer

An intranet-based system for quality assurance in surgery.

Quality assurance in surgery relies on precise medical records about surgical procedures and outcomes. Data quality is crucial for statistical evaluation; missing values cannot be avoided but must be minimized. The quality assurance system must be accessible from many locations within the clinic; given the complex and heterogeneous computing infrastructure this is a technological challenge. Intranet-technology--the application of internet-tools in local networks--can help to solve the technical problems. We designed, implemented and evaluated a generic Intranet-based quality assurance system i

Identifying hidden sexual bridging communities in Chicago.

Bridge populations can play a central role in the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by providing transmission links between higher and lower prevalence populations. While social network methods are well suited to the study of bridge populations, analyses tend to focus on dyads (i.e., risk between drug and/or sex partners) and ignore bridges between distinct subpopulations. This study takes initial steps toward moving the analysis of sexual network linkages beyond individual and risk group levels to a community level in which Chicago's 77 community areas are examined as subpopulation

Computational Synthetic Biology Enabled through JAX: A Showcase.

Mathematical modeling is indispensable in synthetic biology but remains underutilized. Tackling problems, from optimizing gene networks to simulating intracellular dynamics, can be facilitated by the ever-growing body of modeling approaches, be they mechanistic, stochastic, data-driven, or AI-enabled. Thanks to progress in the AI community, robust frameworks have emerged to enable researchers to access complex computational hardware and compilation. Previously, these frameworks focused solely on deep learning, but they have been developed to the point where running different forms of computati

Situated Precision Healthcare in the Smart Medical Home: Bringing NASA's Research Strategy down to Earth.

This special issue is ambitious in that it calls for strategic transformation in research on Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related dementias, including innovation in both research design and value delivery, through lifestyle interventions that implicitly relate to a much broader range of comorbidities and diseases of aging. One response to this challenge is to venture beyond the boundaries of research that supports the healthcare industry. Toward this end, we introduce opportunities for research translation and knowledge transfer from NASA to the healthcare industry. Our intent is to show how N

Metabolism-weighted brain connectome reveals synaptic integration and vulnerability to neurodegeneration.

The brain's capacity for integration arises from both its structural wiring and energetically demanding electrochemical signaling. Yet current connectome analyses treat network nodes as functionally homogeneous, ignoring that neural communication is constrained by metabolic cost. Here, we introduce a metabolism-weighted connectome, a fully weighted brain graph in which both connections and the metabolic activity of each node describe the network's capacity for integration. Using three datasets of simultaneous fMRI and [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography acquisitions, we define

Making path selection faster: a routing algorithm for ONoC.

Optical network-on-chip (ONoC) is an effective communication architecture to realize high performance and energy efficiency. Diverse routing algorithms are proposed to avoid the congestion, tolerate the faults, and reduce the insertion loss or energy consumption. However, existing algorithms did not consider the characteristic optical circuit-switching of ONoC, which aggravates the network congestion and degrades the associated performance severely. In this paper, by exploiting congestion prediction technique, we propose a new routing algorithm for ONoC, named loophole-routing, to improve the s

Identification and Classification of Hubs in microRNA Target Gene Networks in Human Neural Stem/Progenitor Cells following Japanese Encephalitis Virus Infection.

RNA viruses are known to modulate host microRNA (miRNA) machinery for their own benefit. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a neurotropic RNA virus, has been reported to manipulate several miRNAs in neurons or microglia. However, no report indicates a complete sketch of the miRNA profile of neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs), hence the focus of our current study. We used an miRNA array of 84 miRNAs in uninfected and JEV-infected human neuronal progenitor cells and primary neural precursor cells isolated from aborted fetuses. Severalfold downregulation of hsa-miR-9-5p, hsa-miR-22-3p, hsa-miR-

Altered structural connectivity networks in dementia with lewy bodies.

The impairment of large-scale brain networks has been observed in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) using functional connectivity, but the potential for an analogous effect on structural covariance patterns has not been determined. Twenty-four probable DLB subjects (mean age 74.3 ± 6.7 years, 16.7% female) and 23 similarly aged Controls were included. All participants underwent 3T MRI imaging with high-resolution T1-weighted magnetization-prepared rapid gradient echo (MPRAGE) sequence. Graph theoretical analyses were performed using variation in regional cortical thickness to construct a structu

Profiling novel lateral gene transfer events in the human microbiome.

Lateral gene transfer (LGT) is an important mechanism for genome diversification in microbial populations, including the human microbiome. While prior work has surveyed LGT events in human-associated microbial isolate genomes, the scope and dynamics of novel LGT events arising in personal microbiomes are not well understood, as there are no widely adopted computational methods to detect, quantify, and characterize LGT from complex microbial communities. We addressed this by developing, benchmarking, and experimentally validating a computational method (WAAFLE) to profile novel LGT events from

Feed-forward hierarchical model of the ventral visual stream applied to functional brain image classification.

Functional brain imaging is a common tool in monitoring the progression of neurodegenerative and neurological disorders. Identifying functional brain imaging derived features that can accurately detect neurological disease is of primary importance to the medical community. Research in computer vision techniques to identify objects in photographs have reported high accuracies in that domain, but their direct applicability to identifying disease in functional imaging is still under investigation in the medical community. In particular, Serre et al. (: In: IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and P

Engineering liver.

Interest in "engineering liver" arises from multiple communities: therapeutic replacement; mechanistic models of human processes; and drug safety and efficacy studies. An explosion of micro- and nanofabrication, biomaterials, microfluidic, and other technologies potentially affords unprecedented opportunity to create microphysiological models of the human liver, but engineering design principles for how to deploy these tools effectively toward specific applications, including how to define the essential constraints of any given application (available sources of cells, acceptable cost, and user

Constructing cell-type-specific gene regulatory networks from cell-cell communication and a global gene regulatory network.

Accurately inferring cell-type-specific gene regulatory networks (GRNs) is crucial for understanding cellular heterogeneity, lineage determination, and disease progression mechanisms. Although single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables high-resolution expression profiling, its inherent sparsity and high noise levels pose challenges to reliable GRN reconstruction. To address these issues, we propose cell type-specific gene regulatory network (CTN), a regulatory inference framework based on bilateral self-representation matrix decomposition, which integrates bulk RNA-seq data with scRNA-seq

Passive in-home health and wellness monitoring: overview, value and examples.

Modern sensor and communication technology, coupled with advances in data analysis and artificial intelligence techniques, is causing a paradigm shift in remote management and monitoring of chronic disease. In-home monitoring technology brings the added benefit of measuring individualized health status and reporting it to the care provider and caregivers alike, allowing timely and targeted preventive interventions, even in home and community based settings. This paper presents a paradigm for geriatric care based on monitoring older adults passively in their own living settings through placing

Neurological teleconsultation for general practitioners.

A neurology teleconsulting network was implemented between a university hospital in Lisbon and five nearby health centres. PCs equipped for videoconferencing were installed, connected by ISDN lines at 128 kbit/s. Fifty-three general practitioners (GPs) were surveyed. The survey showed that the GPs had difficulties in using computers, but they had definite intentions to use teleconsultation for neurology cases and 83% of the respondents stated that they would probably use the technique. During the study, 90 neurology teleconsultations took place over 55 weeks. The average consultation rate was

Software and database for the analysis of mutations in the human WT1 gene.

The WT1 gene, located at 11p13, encodes a zinc finger transcription factor involved in renal and gonadal development and in Wilms' tumor. Constitutional mutations of this gene have been described in most patients with Denys Drash syndrome (mesangial sclerosis associated with male pseudohermaphrodism and/or Wilms' tumor), but also in patients with genitourinary abnormalities and Wilms' tumor (WT) or presenting with only unilateral or bilateral WT. Moreover, approximately 10% of Wilms' tumors carry WT1 mutations at the somatic level. To facilitate the genotype-phenotype correlation analyses, we
