Memory impairments and communication in relatively able autistic children.

Autistic people have specific memory difficulties. The effects of these difficulties on communication in relatively able autistic children and learning impaired controls were assessed in three experiments. The experiments tested the ability to: (1) carry out instructions; (2) ask questions without repetition; and (3) answer questions about past activities. When specific memory skills were required autistic children's communication was impaired relative to controls. When the need to use these skills was eliminated from the tasks the autistic children performed as well as controls. Some practica

Empirical descriptions of mental patient syndromes and types.

Used a cluster analytic procedure to describe mental illness. Data for 2,600 mental patients from a research record system were clustered into six symptom and four antecedent dimensions. The patients were typed into seven antecedent and seven symptom types according to their patterns of scores over these dimensions. The types were related to diagnostic data, the antecedent and symptom dimensions, impairment ratings, outcomes and biodata. Significant relationships of the types with all the classes of data are reported. The relationships of the types with four diagnostic classes and the merits o

Pathophysiology of new bone formation and ankylosis in spondyloarthritis.

The outcome of patients suffering from spondyloarthritis is determined by chronic inflammation and new bone formation leading to ankylosis. The latter process manifests by new cartilage and bone formation leading to joint or spine fusion. This article discusses the main mechanisms of new bone formation in spondyloarthritis. It reviews the key molecules and concepts of new bone formation and ankylosis in animal models of disease and translates these findings to human disease. In addition, proposed biomarkers of new bone formation are evaluated and the translational current and future challenges

Neoliberal Misfits: Reconceptualizing Debility in the Critical Medical Humanities.

In recent years, the concept of debility has gained a lot of attention. In critical theory and in the critical medical humanities, the concept has come to refer specifically to the general ill-health of ordinary lives under neoliberal capitalism; as such, it has triggered a surge of interest in large-scale affective assemblages that incapacitate multitudes of bodies. This article proposes neoliberal misfit as a conceptual tool to remedy the dissolution of subjectivity in these discussions. Pushing back against Jasbir Puar specifically, it argues that processes of debilitation produce a particu

Acetaminophen inhibits prostanoid synthesis by scavenging the PGHS-activator peroxynitrite.

The primary pharmacological target of acetaminophen is prostaglandin endoperoxide H2 synthase (PGHS). The enzymatic catalytic mechanism is radical-based, initiated, and maintained by the persistent presence of peroxides, particularly peroxynitrite, which is termed "peroxide tone". Whereas the prevailing concept assumes a direct reduction of the active, oxidized enzyme by acetaminophen, here we show that acetaminophen is a potent scavenger of peroxynitrite (peroxynitrite-mediated phenol nitration, IC50 approximately 72 microM; Sin-1-mediated DHR123 oxidation, IC50 approximately 11 microM) and t

The relational self-concept scale: a context-specific self-report measure for adolescents.

This paper describes an alternative approach to measuring the self that directly accounts for the way individuals ruminate on their external actions in order to inform and maintain their self-image. This was achieved by designing the Relational Self-Concept Scale (RSCS), a measure that explores the role and impact that different social encounters within and around the school context have upon self-concept formation. Analysis of responses to this context-specific self-report measure, obtained from a large sample of adolescents (N = 978), confirmed that the scale is multidimensional, possesses a

Golgi requires a new casting in the screenplay of mucopolysaccharidosis II cytopathology.

Lysosome (L), a hydrolytic compartment of the endo-lysosomal system (ELS), plays a central role in the metabolic regulation of eukaryotic cells. Furthermore, it has a central role in the cytopathology of several diseases, primarily in lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II, Hunter disease) is a rare LSD caused by idunorate-2-sulphatase (IDS) enzyme deficiency. To provide a new platform for drug development and clarifying the background of the clinically observed cytopathology, we established a human in vitro model, which recapitulates all cellular hallmarks of the

Chronic nasal dysfunction.

Chronic nasal dysfunction is a clinical concept in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of sinonasal diseases, based on the evo-devo theory of formation of the nose according to which the nose is not a single organ but rather an association of three organs: olfactory nose, respiratory nose and paranasal sinuses. In chronic nasal dysfunction theory, etiological diagnosis takes account of the possible pathophysiological independence of nasal symptoms, in accordance with the different origins and physiology of the three organs constituting the nose. The diagnostic approach of the chronic nas

Mother-to-infant bonding.

The concept of maternal 'bonding', i.e. rapid mother-to-neonate attachment, appears frequently in psychiatric, paediatric and social work discussions of childhood psychopathology and child abuse. 'Bonding' is used as a diagnostic concept, and one which has to bear the weight of important explanatory, descriptive and predictive statements. In turn, it is related aetiologically to post-partum contact and separations of mother and infant. The authors present a critical review of the concept, exploring its empirical basis, and the implications (logical and illogical) that flow from its application

Categorical induction in children with autism spectrum disorder: Exploring potential sources of individual differences.

Categorical induction, the cognitive process by which the specific properties of category exemplars are extended to novel instances, is not absent in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, it appears to be partially impaired. The basis of these children's difficulties with categorical induction is not well understood. The current study examined categorical induction ability and the potential sources of individual differences from the perspectives of both linguistic and cognitive abilities. Twenty-two children with ASD and 36 age- and nonverbal IQ-matched typically developing (T

The Neural Consequences of Semantic Composition.

Humans can create completely new concepts through semantic composition. These "conceptual combinations" can be created by attributing the features of one concept to another (e.g., a "lemon flamingo" might be a yellow flamingo) or drawing on a relationship between concepts (e.g., a "lemon flamingo" might consume lemons). We ask how semantic composition modulates the neural representations of underlying concepts. Combining fMRI with multivariate pattern analysis, we interrogate neural patterns for concepts before and after they were subjected to semantic composition. We observe a postcomposition

Healthcare professionals' conceptualizations of palliative care and readiness for early integration: a cross‑sectional mixed‑methods survey in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Early integration of palliative care for patients with advanced cancer is recommended by major organizations and guidelines, yet palliative care is often still perceived as end-of-life care or as incompatible with active oncological treatment. Such misconceptions may delay timely integration. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional mixed-methods survey among healthcare professionals in oncology services in Ostrobothnia, Finland. The survey included 15 Likert-scale statements (1-5) addressing perceived knowledge, values and role beliefs, and perceived capacity and support, plus one

The inferior frontal gyrus supports category switching during creative associations: A pattern similarity analysis.

Creativity involves the association of distant semantic concepts in memory, yet how the brain supports this associative process remains unclear. When generating multiple associates, people typically engage in either category switching-retrieving successive concepts from different semantic categories (e.g., restaurant and computer in association with the word server)-or category clustering-retrieving exemplars from the same category (e.g., restaurant and waiter). This study aims to characterize the brain activity associated with the generation of creative (remote) associations when switching an

Emotional and Social Dimension of Abstract Concepts Meet with Interoception in Right Anterior Insula.

According to the embodied cognition theory, which claims that concepts' representation is grounded in sensory and motor components, abstract concepts are grounded in interoception, which is processed in the Anterior Insula (AIns). However, it is not clear whether interoception and abstract concepts share common anatomical substrates, and if yes, whether AIns is one candidate. In this study, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on healthy human participants (N = 25, 19 females) to examine whether left and right AIns play a role in both abstract concepts and interoception.

"Don't You Think It Is Violence Forcing Me to Have Sex While Not Happy?" Women's Conceptualization of Enjoyable Sex and Sexual Intimate Partner Violence in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Intimate partner violence is a recognized public health and development issue that is consistently and comparatively measured through women's experience of physical and/or sexual acts by their partner. While physical intimate partner violence is covered by a wide range of behaviors, sexual intimate partner violence (SIPV) is often only measured through attempted or completed forced sex, ignoring less obvious forms of sexual intimate partner violence. We explored women's conceptualizations of SIPV by conducting in-depth interviews with 18 Tanzanian women. Using a thematic approach, we identifie

Body selectivity in occipitotemporal cortex: Causal evidence.

Perception of others' bodies provides information that is useful for a number of important social-cognitive processes. Evidence from neuroimaging methods has identified focal cortical regions that are highly selective for perceiving bodies and body parts, including the extrastriate body area (EBA) and fusiform body area (FBA). Our understanding of the functional properties of these regions, and their causal contributions to behavior, has benefitted from the study of neuropsychological patients and particularly from investigations using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We review this ev

Triggers of fear: perceptual cues versus conceptual information in spider phobia.

OBJECTIVE: Fear reactions in spider-phobic patients can be activated by specific perceptual cues or by conceptual fear-related information. Matching perceptual fear cues and fear-related information were expected to result in maximal fear responses, perceptual fear cues alone in less fear, and information alone in the weakest responses. METHOD: We used virtual reality to manipulate the available cues and information. Forty-eight phobic patients and 48 healthy participants were repeatedly exposed to either a perceptual cue, information, or a combination of both. RESULTS: In conditions with a

A test of central coherence theory: linguistic processing in high-functioning adults with autism or Asperger syndrome: is local coherence impaired?

Central coherence theory (Frith, U., 1989. Autism: Explaining the Enigma. Blackwell, Oxford.) is addressed by exploring linguistic processing in normally intelligent adults with either autism or Asperger syndrome, to test whether local coherence is impaired. Local coherence is the ability to make contextually meaningful connections between linguistic information in short-term or working memory. Experiment 1 demonstrated that individuals with an autism spectrum condition were less likely to use the sentence context spontaneously to provide the context-appropriate pronunciation of a homograph.
