Radiographics : a review publication of the Radiological Society of North America, Inc2016eng
Increased physical activity in childhood has resulted in a large number of sports-related injuries. Although there is overlap between the sports-related injuries seen in pediatric and adult patients, important differences exist in the injury patterns of pediatric patients. These differences are related to the continuous changes in the developing skeleton and its relationship with adjacent soft tissues. The imbalance in strength between the growing bones and the nearby tendons and ligaments makes the bones prone to acute and chronic injuries. Acute injuries are more common in contact sports suc

Various surgical procedures have been described for the treatment of complete acromioclavicular joint dislocation, but no consensus exists on the optimal therapy. The aim of each type of procedure is to stabilize the clavicle by substitution of the ruptured coracoclavicular ligaments. Treatment modalities have changed with increasing understanding of the nature of the problem and the biomechanics of the joint. This article presents a method consisting of a modified Weaver-Dunn procedure and a clavicular hook plate for the operative management of acute acromioclavicular joint injuries. We perfor

To ensure safe, quick, pain-relieving, standardized, and reproducible high quality plain film radiography in fractures of the proximal humerus, the MSR splint was introduced into clinical practice. With the rectangular and completely radiolucent splint the shoulder radiographs are obtained in supine position by a sole radiographer. Two radiographs are taken in projection at 90 degrees to one another: the true anteroposterior and axillary views, the most important views for fracture visualization and assessment. The smooth flat bottom part of the splint glides easily across the X-ray table belo

The number of patients undergoing chemotherapy for tumor disease has considerably increased in the last years. One of the problems of these long-term treatment modalities is the destruction of the peripheral venous system due to the repeated venous punctures for the therapy itself as well as for the laboratory analyses. This has been the motive for the research on permanent perfusion systems which would work at long term in a reliable way. Nowadays, several industrial products are available, devices for the standard implantation intravenously but also devices for intraarterial and intraperiton

INTRODUCTION: This was a prospective random study to determine if suction applied to the glenoid vault through the coracoid process would facilitate deeper penetration of cement into the vault, and if deeper penetration would lead to a more durable glenoid component.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 96 patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 pathways for glenoid fixation. One was cemented using modern "third generation" cementing techniques, while the second group utilizes these same steps as well as a vacuum assist (weep-hole) technique. We measured the "amount" of cement that penetrated

Radiography is frequently used for the evaluation of the musculoskeletal system in domestic and wild animal species. The aim of the study was to document the radiological anatomy of the shoulder, elbow and carpal joints and to provide length measurements of selective forelimb bones in southern giant pouched rats. Forelimb radiographs were obtained in seven adult male and female southern giant pouched rats under general anaesthesia. All rats had a well-developed clavicle, coracoid process and acromion. The minor and major tubercles were located further distally relative to the head of the humer

BACKGROUND: Langer's axillary arch (LAA) is a common muscular variant in the axilla, yet detailed descriptions of its layered and level-dependent relationships with the axillary neurovascular bundle remain limited.
CASE REPORT: During routine educational dissection of a 79-year-old Korean male cadaver, a right-sided LAA was identified. The arch examined sequentially by anatomical layer. Morphometric data were obtained using a digital caliper. The LAA arose from the latissimus dorsi as a muscular slip (22.5 mm wide), tapered cranially, and inserted as a tendinous slip into the coracoid process

We compared the strength of screw vs suture button fixation in the Latarjet procedure for shoulder dislocation through biomechanical testing in a cadaver model. Cadavers were assigned randomly to receive screw or suture button fixation (both groups, n=5). The anteroposterior radius of the glenoid was measured, and a bony defect was created on the anteroinferior rim of the glenoid, equal to 25% of the width of the anteroposterior radius of the glenoid surface. The coracoid process was transferred into the newly created bony defect of the glenoid and fixed with two 3.5-mm partially threaded cann

Although coracoclavicular fixation is currently popular for type III acromioclavicular (AC) dislocations, a surgical gold standard is lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preliminary outcome of surgical treatment of complete AC dislocations with a new nitinol C hook implant. When the implant is cooled (<5 degrees C), it softens enough to be easily inserted under the coracoid process with a hole drilled in the clavicle. Cooling is induced with ice water. When the implant reaches body temperature, it hardens and anatomic reduction is achieved. Patients with acute type III AC di

AIM: To conduct a radiographic assessment of the occurrence of the acromioclavicular joint subluxation in patients with long-standing rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: A cohort of 74 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis was followed prospectively for 15 years. At the 15-year visit, plain radiographs of both shoulders (n = 148) were obtained using a standard method. Acromioclavicular joint destruction was evaluated using Larsen's method, and radiographic subluxation was measured on the radiographs using two different methods. In one of these methods (method A), the distance between the

OBJECTIVE: Shoulder dislocation represents a prevalent category within joint dislocation, accounting for about 40% of all joint dislocations, and anterior dislocation stands out as the prevailing type. It has been reported that in 1.6% of patients, the Latarjet procedure performed under arthroscopy involves transferring the coracoid process to the anterior-inferior aspect of the glenoid and fixing it with two bicortical screws. The tip of the screws may impinge the suprascapular nerve located behind the scapula, resulting in shoulder pain and weakness. This study was performed to analyze the r

We present a case describing a technique for the surgical management and aesthetico-functional reconstruction of a shoulder in an adult with unilateral upper limb phocomelia (ULP).1 A 25 year old male patient was presented to our clinic with upper left limb non-syndromic phocomelia. His main concerns was an aesthetically unpleasant limb and shoulder shape. Few older publications describe available options for pediatric patients, such as clavicle transposition or limb amputation, but nowadays ULP treatment options focus on prosthetic rehabilitation (PR) and targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR).

External fixation is a common, efficient technique used for humeral shaft stabilization and elbow fractures. There are reports of radial nerve injuries associated with this procedure. In this study, we investigated the course and variability of the radial nerve along the lateral humerus in relation to the elbow joint to determine a relatively safe zone for lateral pin placement in external fixation. Twenty upper extremities from 10 cadavers were studied. The nerve branches and course of the radial nerve along the lateral humerus were carefully dissected. Straight lines (a, b, and c) were made
