Investigating the composition and distribution of microplastics surface biofilms in coral areas.

In recent years, global climate change and pollution of the marine environment have caused large-scale coral deaths and severe damages to coral reef ecosystems. Numerous studies have shown that coral diseases are closely related to microorganisms. And microplastics (MPs) are a potential threat to corals. In marine ecosystems, MPs are an emerging contaminant. MPs have a strong adsorption effect on pollutants in the water environment, and they are very easily colonized by microorganisms to form biofilms. Biofilms may accumulate many pathogens, increasing the probability of coral disease. However

Gnathia aureamaculosa, a likely definitive host of Haemogregarina balistapi and potential vector for Haemogregarina bigemina between fishes of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Investigations to determine whether juvenile gnathiid isopods are vectors of haemogregarines between coral reef fishes were undertaken at Lizard Island, Australia. Haemogregarina balistapi parasitaemias in triggerfish, Rhinecanthus aculeatus, decreased under gnathiid-free, laboratory conditions, compared with those in tagged R. aculeatus returned to the reef. Gnathia aureamaculosa juveniles were common ectoparasites of reef R. aculeatus and laboratory reared specimens of this gnathiid were fed on R. aculeatus infected with H. balistapi. Subsequent squashes of this gnathiid contained haemogrega

Predator-mediated trophic connectivity between reef and oceanic habitats in Palau.

Effective fisheries management and marine spatial planning depend on understanding how mobile predators link reef and oceanic ecosystems through cross-habitat movements and foraging. Predator resource use shapes movement and space-use strategies, providing insight into life history and behavioral variation, the identification of critical habitats, and spatial patterns of vulnerability to fishing and other human activities. Yet cross-habitat trophic connectivity remains poorly quantified in diverse coral reef and oceanic systems. Here, we used stable isotope (δ13C, δ15N) analysis, complemented

Underwater imaging dataset in a very shallow water environment of Pramuka Island, Seribu Island District, Indonesia.

In this article, we present a dataset of underwater videos captured through manual dives in a complex and unstructured seabed area dominated by harbor structures and coral reefs. The area is shallow (0.5 - 7.0 m depth) with an enclosed embayment for the harbor area, offering protection from ocean currents and waves. The coral reef area is located in a more open ocean sloping gently toward the deeper seafloor, leading to a more pronounced rolling shutter effect and camera motion. The dataset was collected using a GoPro Hero 10 camera, employing a standard wide lens with a horizontal field of vi

Widespread siderophore production among Symbiodiniaceae-associated bacteria.

Nutritional exchanges fuel the evolutionary and ecological dominance of multi-partner symbioses among reef-building corals and microbial associates in oligotrophic tropical marine ecosystems. Mutualistic relationships with endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Family Symbiodiniaceae) are central to coral holobiont metabolism, yet their metabolic contributions are sensitive to nutrient availability. Symbiodiniaceae may compensate for oligotrophic environments via metabolic exchanges with prokaryotic partners. Bacterial production of ligands with affinities for otherwise insoluble elements promotes upt

High potential for formation and persistence of chimeras following aggregated larval settlement in the broadcast spawning coral, Acropora millepora.

In sessile modular marine invertebrates, chimeras can originate from fusions of closely settling larvae or of colonies that come into contact through growth or movement. While it has been shown that juveniles of brooding corals fuse under experimental conditions, chimera formation in broadcast spawning corals, the most abundant group of reef corals, has not been examined. This study explores the capacity of the broadcast spawning coral Acropora millepora to form chimeras under experimental conditions and to persist as chimeras in the field. Under experimental conditions, 1.5-fold more larvae s

Coral carbonate pH records show localized stability within Philippine waters.

The process of decreasing seawater pH due to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide known as ocean acidification is a global phenomenon with very strong regional effects. We report the first seasonal and interannual carbonate chemistry variabilities in the Philippines determined using carbonate boron systematics. Coral δ11B-pHsw from two contrasting site conditions showed more positive trends than basin-wide averages, suggesting that reef waters around the Philippines represented by these sites may be offsetting the general pH decline in global seawater. This pattern is consistent with δ11B-pHs

Development and field application of a molecular probe for the primary pathogen of the coral disease white plague type II.

One of the current problems in the field of coral disease research is that of tracking coral pathogens in the natural environment. A promising method to do this is by use of pathogen-specific molecular probes. However, this approach has been little used to date. We constructed, and validated in the laboratory, a fluorochrome-labeled molecular probe specific to Aurantimonas coralicida, the bacterial pathogen of the Caribbean coral disease white plague type II (WPIl). We then used the probe to test field samples of diseased coral tissue for the presence of this pathogen. Probe design was based o

Unraveling the microbial processes of black band disease in corals through integrated genomics.

Coral disease outbreaks contribute to the ongoing degradation of reef ecosystems, however, microbial mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of most coral diseases are poorly understood. Black band disease (BBD) manifests as a cyanobacterial-dominated microbial mat that destroys coral tissues as it rapidly spreads over coral colonies. To elucidate BBD pathogenesis, we apply a comparative metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approach to identify taxonomic and functional changes within microbial lesions during in-situ development of BBD from a comparatively benign stage termed cyanobacteri

Distinct emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds from temperate benthic taxa.

INTRODUCTION: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are emitted by all organisms as intermediate or end-products of metabolic processes. Individual BVOCs perform important physiological, ecological and climatic functions, and collectively constitute the volatilome-which can be reflective of organism taxonomy and health. Although BVOC emissions of tropical benthic reef taxa have recently been the focus of multiple studies, emissions derived from their temperate counterparts have never been characterised. OBJECTIVES: Characterise the volatilomes of key competitors for benthic space among

The Assimilation of Diazotroph-Derived Nitrogen by Scleractinian Corals Depends on Their Metabolic Status.

UNLABELLED: Tropical corals are associated with a diverse community of dinitrogen (N2)-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) providing the coral an additional source of bioavailable nitrogen (N) in oligotrophic waters. The overall activity of these diazotrophs changes depending on the current environmental conditions, but to what extent it affects the assimilation of diazotroph-derived N (DDN) by corals is still unknown. Here, in a series of 15N2 tracer experiments, we directly quantified DDN assimilation by scleractinian corals from the Red Sea exposed to different environmental conditions. We sho

Thermal Vulnerability of Reef Fish and Implications for Subsistence Fisheries Throughout the Caribbean.

Dual biodiversity and climate crises have exacerbated declines in global fisheries, resulting in food insecurity for communities that depend on subsistence fishing. As fish populations change and shift their geographic distributions under a changing environment, long-term planning of fisheries management becomes critical for ensuring food security. Here, we first present physiologically informed species distribution models (pSDM) of seven finfish species in the Caribbean that are important for subsistence in some coastal areas. These models identified areas at risk of climate-driven declines a

Experimental manipulation of ecological constraints influences conflict but not cooperation in the humbug damselfish Dascyllus aruanus.

Animal societies vary widely in levels of cooperation and conflict, and understanding the causes of this variation is a central goal in evolutionary biology. As with other features of animal societies, relatedness, competitiveness and ecological constraints (e.g. habitat saturation and risks of dispersal) have been proposed as key factors explaining variation in cooperation and conflict. However, the exact causes remain unclear. We used the humbug damselfish (Dascyllus aruanus)-a small coral reef fish that occupies coral heads-to experimentally test the prediction from Emlen's ecological const

Water quality trends in river catchments draining to the Great Barrier Reef: an analysis of ∼40 years of data.

Analysis of water quality trends in river catchments provides critical insights into the influence of climate, landscape/land use change and management drivers thereby informing evidence-based policy interventions. Long-term water quality datasets from nine monitoring sites across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchment of northeastern Australia were carefully curated and analysed using Generalised Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) to identify both long-term (∼linear) and episodic (non-linear) trends in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and suspended sediment (SS) concentrations. The GAMMs approac

Coral larval aquaculture: Species-specific survival and microbial dynamics in flow-through systems.

To enable burgeoning reef restoration efforts, the production of coral larvae in captive aquaculture needs to maximize survival and yields. While current coral larval rearing methods are generally successful, the approaches vary, and larval yields can be limited due to gradual declines in larval quality or sudden crashes. Here, we reared Acropora sp. nov. aff. kenti and Acropora spathulata larvae for seven days under different stocking densities (0.3, 1.0, or 2.0 larvae mL-1), water volume turnover rates (0.2 or 0.6 vol. hr-1), and with or without UV sterilization and surface agitation, to eva

Cross-talk between tissues is critical for intergenerational acclimation to environmental change in Acanthochromis polyacanthus.

Organisms' responses to environmental changes involve complex, coordinated responses of multiple tissues and potential parental influences. Here using a multi-tissue approach we determine how variation in parental behavioural tolerance and exposure to elevated CO2 influences the developmental and intergenerational molecular responses of their offspring in the coral reef fish Acanthochromis polyacanthus to future ocean acidification (OA) conditions. Gills and liver showed the highest transcriptional response to OA in juvenile fish regardless of parental OA conditioning, while the brain and live

Molecular changes in skin pigmented lesions of the coral trout Plectropomus leopardus.

A high prevalence of skin pigmented lesions of 15% was recently reported in coral trout Plectropomus leopardus, a commercially important marine fish, inhabiting the Great Barrier Reef. Herein, fish were sampled at two offshore sites, characterised by high and low lesion prevalence. A transcriptomic approach using the suppressive subtractive hybridisation (SSH) method was used to analyse the differentially expressed genes between lesion and normal skin samples. Transcriptional changes of 14 genes were observed in lesion samples relative to normal skin samples. These targeted genes encoded for s

Understanding spatial heterogeneity of rocky reef demersal fish assemblages: Links to conservation plans in the Juan Fernández Archipelago Marine Protected Area in the Southeastern Pacific.

Spatial heterogeneity linked to fish assemblages has been key to advancing conservation plans and assessing marine resources in remote ecosystems. The Juan Fernández Archipelago is a remote and highly heterogeneous geologic hotspot located on the Nazca plate (SE Pacific), comprising three islands, numerous seamounts and guyots, and a highly rugged coastal marine shelf. Hundreds of rocky reefs of various sizes characterize this insular coastal shelf, supporting diverse finfish populations of interest for the Robinson Crusoe Island artisanal fishing fleet. Two hydroacoustic surveys were conducte
