OBJECTIVE: Electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation is crucial for emergencies, alongside point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS). A prior survey of Emergency Medicine program directors identified "must know" ECG diagnoses. But whether ECG interpretation is adequately promoted by the Royal College, included in structured curriculum, and learned by residents is unknown. We sought to identify curriculum gaps and opportunities for improvement.
METHODS: Using constructive alignment framework, we conducted a multi-modal evaluation of Canadian Emergency Medicine residency program ECG education. For intended

BACKGROUND: Geriatricians are expected to use telemedicine to deliver high-quality care to older adults. Yet, little is known about the training geriatric fellows received prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and their preparedness to care for older adults virtually. This paper discusses a needs assessment of alumni of a geriatric medicine fellowship program conducted to identify core telemedicine competencies and guide the development of telemedicine curricula in geriatric fellowship.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional survey study administered online to alumni (2005-2020) of an academic geriatric

Colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are a major indication for liver surgery in Europe, highlighting the need for standardized knowledge and training in surgical oncology. The European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) has updated its core curriculum to provide a structured framework for education. Previous publications have addressed pancreatic, hepatocellular, and biliary tract cancers to support candidates preparing for the European Board of Surgery Qualification (EBSQ) exams in Surgical Oncology and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery. However, a dedicated guide for CRLM remains absent. This

BACKGROUND: Peds OncoTalk is a novel curriculum for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) fellows to learn key communication skills to deliver cancer care using validated principles. Interpersonal and communication skills are core competencies for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited PHO fellowship.
METHODS: A 3-day, virtual course emphasizing skill practice in small groups with simulated patients was created. Participants completed pre- and postsurveys to measure reported preparedness with skills on a 5-point Likert scale. The course teaches responding to emo

BACKGROUND: High-quality patient care necessitates knowledge of health disparities and strategies for cultural humility, yet no widely accepted health equity curriculum is available for general surgery residents. We developed such a curriculum based on adult learning theory and local public health priorities. The format included quarterly cultural complications Morbidity and Mortality conferences, interprofessional panels, and case-based discussions. We aimed to assess the impact of the integration of this curriculum.
METHODS: Postsession surveys and focus groups with general surgery resident

With pain being commonly stated as a reason for presentation to the emergency department (ED) and the advent of the opioid crisis in the United States, regional anesthesia has been gaining prominence as an alternative treatment for acute pain in emergency medicine. However, to this date, there is no widely agreed-upon and standardized training regimen for regional anesthesia in emergency medicine residency programs. In this paper, we set out to define elements of competency for a residency program in a large academic tertiary center and to create a protocol for resident training that could be

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the provision of teaching and assessment on the undergraduate dental programme in many institutions worldwide, and for a prolonged period resulted in the cessation of face-to-face teaching. This resulted in significant changes in the way that didactic and preclinical skills have been taught and required novel thinking to overcome the issues that COVID-19 restrictions presented.Dentistry is a very practical subject and at this institution, the University of Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, we had to quickly develop new ways of teaching that allow

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities face significant health disparities. Studies show that healthcare professionals harbor negative attitudes towards disability, compromising the quality of care. These attitudes, in unwritten, unofficial, and even unintended ways can be passed from providers to learners in the medical education setting.
OBJECTIVE: Using a Critical Disability Studies (CDS) paradigm, the authors uncovered the disability-related hidden curriculum within Case-Based Learning (CBL) and proposed guidelines for promoting a disability-conscious medical education that resists ableism.

OBJECTIVE: Otolaryngologists take on various leadership roles throughout their daily practice, but specific training focused on leadership development during otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) residency is not well-defined. This project explores the current state of leadership curricula for OHNS residents.
DATA SOURCES: Google Scholar, Embase, PubMed, and MedEdPORTAL.
REVIEW METHODS: A scoping review was performed on English-language, full-text, peer-reviewed articles that describe leadership curricula for OHNS residents. Investigators reviewed curriculum settings, content, delivery

AUDIENCE: This curriculum is appropriate for emergency medicine residents PGY 1-3 as a toxicology curriculum.
LENGTH OF CURRICULUM: The intent is to run this curriculum over one week.
INTRODUCTION: Toxicology is an important part of the emergency medicine (EM) curriculum and defined in the Council of Residency Directors (CORD) 2019 Model of Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine as a key area of core content expected to be mastered by graduating EM seniors.1 Unfortunately, programs may not have time in their schedules for a dedicated toxicology curriculum, and residents may not have time to

Background Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (LICs) are innovative educational models that allow medical student continuity with patients, preceptors, colleagues, and health care systems. Given their benefits, the number of LICs continues to increase. We share a pilot model for an ophthalmology LIC curriculum at the University of Colorado School of Medicine targeted for students to see patients through transitions of care. Methods A needs assessment was performed including literature search, interviews with expert faculty, and a precurricular student questionnaire. Based on our findings, we

Dental sleep medicine is a discipline that includes conditions such as sleep breathing disorders (eg snoring and sleep apnoea), sleep bruxism, orofacial pain and sleep-related complaints, and to some extent gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder and/or insomnia. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a life-threatening condition that dentists need to identify and manage when indicated in order to increase patient well-being and to be taken in consideration in the dental curriculum. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the relevance of dental sleep medicine in the context of dental education

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2019eng
AIMS: Elder abuse, defined as emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, financial exploitation, or neglect, is a growing problem. Dental professionals have the unique opportunity to identify elder abuse. However, elder abuse awareness training, targeting dental students, is insufficient and research is limited. This knowledge gap prompted the research team at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) to develop, implement, and evaluate an online Elder Abuse Awareness Professional Education Training (EAAPET) program, designed to educate dental and other health professionals to recog

BACKGROUND: In 1999, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education endorsed systems-based practice as one of six general competencies.
PURPOSE: The objective is to explore the paradigm of teaching residents systems-based practice during a women's health rotation that included abortion training in multiple settings.
METHODS: During a routine women's health rotation, residents from two urban family medicine residency programs received early abortion training at a high-volume abortion clinic and their continuity clinic. Thirty-min semistructured interviews were conducted with all 26
