Prevalence of chronic ankle instability and associated symptoms in university dance majors: an exploratory study.

Previous investigations have established that dancers suffer a large number of injuries to the lower leg, foot, and ankle, with a portion of these being significant time loss injuries or in some cases career ending. Lateral ankle sprain is a common injury in dancers and can often lead to recurrent instability and repetitive injuries. Research in other active populations has linked ankle sprains to the development of chronic ankle instability (CAI). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of CAI and related symptoms of ankle sprain in a student dance population. Indi

Paramyxovirus glycoprotein incorporation, assembly and budding: a three way dance for infectious particle production.

Paramyxoviruses are a family of negative sense RNA viruses whose members cause serious diseases in humans, such as measles virus, mumps virus and respiratory syncytial virus; and in animals, such as Newcastle disease virus and rinderpest virus. Paramyxovirus particles form by assembly of the viral matrix protein, the ribonucleoprotein complex and the surface glycoproteins at the plasma membrane of infected cells and subsequent viral budding. Two major glycoproteins expressed on the viral envelope, the attachment protein and the fusion protein, promote attachment of the virus to host cells and

Old dance with a new partner: EGF receptor as the phenobarbital receptor mediating Cyp2B expression.

The decades-long quest for the phenobarbital (PhB) receptor that mediates activation of Cyp2B would appear fulfilled with the discovery by Mutoh et al., who found that PhB binds with pharmacological affinity to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). This finding provides a molecular basis for the suppression of hepatocyte EGFR signaling observed with PhB treatment, as previously noted in the context of tumor promotion. Although the PhB-mediated induction of Cyp2B expression through the association of a canonical nuclear receptor with the 5'-enhancer PBREM of Cyp2B is well known, direct b

Validating a dance-specific screening test for balance: preliminary results from multisite testing.

UNLABELLED: Few dance-specific screening tools adequately capture balance. The aim of this study was to administer and modify the Star Excursion Balance Test (oSEBT) to examine its utility as a balance screen for dancers. The oSEBT involves standing on one leg while lightly targeting with the opposite foot to the farthest distance along eight spokes of a star-shaped grid. This task simulates dance in the spatial pattern and movement quality of the gesturing limb. The oSEBT was validated for distance on athletes with history of ankle sprain. METHOD: Thirty-three dancers (age 20.1 +/- 1.4 yrs)

Effects of line dancing and flexibility training on chronic non-specific low back pain among college students: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic non-specific low back pain is increasingly common among young adults, yet optimal exercise interventions remain unclear. This study compared two therapies: line dancing-Baduanjin (LD-B), a culturally integrated aerobic exercise, and flexibility training (FT) targeting thoracic and hip mobility. We evaluated their biopsychosocial effects on college students to inform precision-based exercise strategies. METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 84 college students. Participants were assigned to LD-B (n = 23), FT (n = 24), or control (n = 20) gro

A design to investigate the feasibility and effects of partnered ballroom dancing on people with Parkinson disease: randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Self-help and physical leisure activities has become increasingly important in the maintenance of safe and functional mobility among an increasingly elderly population. Preventing the cycle of deterioration, falling, inactivity, dependency, and secondary complications in people with Parkinson disease (PD) is a priority. Research has shown that people with PD are interested in dance and although the few existing trials are small, initial proof of principle trials from the United States have demonstrated beneficial effects on balance control, gait, and activity levels. Associations between body composition and gut microbiota in female college students with and without dance training.

Physical activity has been associated with gut microbiota variation and body composition phenotypes, but evidence in female dance students remains limited. This study compared body composition profiles and gut microbiota characteristics between female university students majoring in dance and those from non-dance majors. Seventy students were included (n = 35 per group). Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (InBody 970), and fecal samples were analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Dance students exhibited significantly lower adiposity related parameters and cent

Dance intervention targeting motor, cognitive, and emotional components in stroke patients and their caregivers: a feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to co-create and assess the feasibility of a novel, museum-based contemporary dance intervention for post-stroke patients and their informal caregivers. The study explored the intervention's feasibility, safety, and preliminary effects on motor, cognitive, and psychosocial wellbeing for both patients and caregivers. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was employed, starting with a co-creation focus group (n = 4 patients, n = 3 caregivers). This was followed by a single-arm, pre-post feasibility pilot. A total of 16 participants were recruited from a hospital rehabil

Multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) for fall prevention in community-dwelling older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies advocate for dance interventions that address the physical and psychological factors associated with fall risk. The multi-dimensional integrated dance therapeutics (MIDT) program engages participants in physical, psychological, and environmental interactions within a single dance therapeutics framework, rather than focusing solely on balance, strength, or mobility outcomes; it therefore promotes an integrated approach for fall prevention among community-dwelling older individuals. With the increase in the aging population, there is a growing demand for developing a

PURPOSE: This study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of Dance/Movement Psychotherapy (DMP) on social skills in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although DMP has been widely applied as an embodied and relational intervention, quantitative evidence regarding its impact on social functioning remains limited. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed across major databases (PubMed and PsycNet) to identify studies published between 2000 and 2025. Eligible studies examined DMP-based interventions targeting social skills in individuals with ASD and

Effect of Dance Intervention on Cognitive Function and Related Cerebellar Dynamic Functional Connectivity in Patients With Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum is a critical node implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia. Previous studies have demonstrated that dance interventions can enhance cerebellar functional connectivity in healthy individuals. These findings suggest that dance intervention might represent a promising treatment for patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: A total of 32 patients with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to two groups: a dance group (n = 18) and an aerobic exercise group (n = 14). Clinical symptoms and cognitive function, along with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (

The body before the dance somatic codification, elemental self-regulation, and contemplative recognition in the Naṭarāja tradition.

This article introduces the Somatic Codification Hypothesis (SCH), a theoretical framework that models the karaṇa system of the Nāṭyaśāstra-the foundational Sanskrit treatise on performance-as a systematic codification of pre-reflective, stimulus-driven bodily responses, alongside, rather than in place of, its established expressive, devotional, and aesthetic readings. The claim advanced here is epistemic and functional, not ontological: I do not argue that the body generates culture, nor that historical practitioners worked outward from physiology to notation. Rather, I argue that treating th

Unveiling the hidden dance: SPP1 + macrophages identified in ulcerative colitis reveal crosstalk with CHI3L1 + fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease characterized by persistent inflammation of the colon. The specific cause of UC is still not fully understood, but this condition is believed to arise from a combination of environmental, genetic, microbial, and immune factors. This study aimed to explore the specific roles of macrophages and fibroblasts in UC pathogenesis, focusing on their interactions and contributions to disease progression. METHODS: We utilized single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to analyze macrophages and fibroblasts in peripheral blood and c

Collider-based movement detection and control of wearable soft robots for visually augmenting dance performance.

The fusion of wearable soft robotic actuators and motion-tracking sensors can enhance dance performance, amplifying its visual language and communicative potential. However, the intricate and unpredictable nature of improvisational dance poses unique challenges for existing motion-tracking methods, underscoring the need for more adaptable solutions. Conventional methods such as optical tracking face limitations due to limb occlusion. The use of inertial measurement units (IMUs) can alleviate some of these challenges; however, their movement detection algorithms are complex and often based on f
