Background: This study aimed to evaluate microvascular changes using nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) and to contribute to the understanding of the disease's pathophysiology. Methods: The study included 71 children diagnosed with AD (33 girls/38 boys, median age 108 months) and 71 healthy controls (40 girls/31 boys, median age 126 months). Disease severity in AD patients was assessed using the SCORing of atopic dermatitis (SCORAD) index. Parameters with NFC evaluated included capillary density, size, morphology (tortuous, bushy), microhemorrhages, avascular

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with an elevated risk of mood and anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and suicidal ideation, though there remains a lack of data assessing the impact of atopic dermatitis on hospitalization for psychiatric illness among adolescents. We reviewed the 2022 Kids' Inpatient Database for adolescent patients with AD and sought to assess the primary outcome of whether their reason for hospital admission was psychiatric in nature, encompassing suicidal ideation, mood, psychotic, substance use, neurodevelopmental, trauma, personality, obsessi

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory dermatosis that is characterized by pruritus, xerosis, and age-dependent clinical heterogeneity. Accurately diagnosing AD remains challenging due to the absence of specific biomarkers and the broad spectrum of conditions that may mimic its presentation. A wide range of inflammatory, infectious, and genetic disorders resemble AD, including seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, scabies, dermatophytosis, and nummular eczema, as well as rare immunodeficiency and metabolic conditions. This review summarizes the

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease that significantly burdens individuals and healthcare systems worldwide. The incidence of AD has risen sharply in both developed and emerging economies, necessitating an understanding of its complex etiological factors, including environmental influences and lifestyle changes. Generally, 2 primary preventive strategies for AD have been implemented so far: (1) the "Inside Out" approach that which involves allergen elimination, probiotic supplementation, fish oil supplementation, and vitamin D supplementation aim to regulate the

Mounting evidence suggests atopic dermatitis (AD) is primarily mediated by environmental exposures. This article focuses on specific air pollutants such as isocyanates and those in the benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene family. We discuss the current strength and limitations of the data linking air pollution to AD. Brief mention is given to dietary and water-borne factors of concern. The proposed mechanisms of pathology for these chemicals are detailed. Finally, mitigation strategies are discussed with a focus on facilitating discussion between providers and patients related to the way

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory disease. Animal models are important for studying disease mechanisms and identifying new therapeutic agents. However, owing to AD heterogeneity and complexity, there is currently no mouse model that can fully simulate human AD. We searched experimental articles published between 2017 and 2021 to identify the most suitable AD mouse model. We summarized and compared 614 articles, including details on mouse strains, sex, age, irritants, modeling cycles, and spontaneous mouse models. BALB/c mice (45.3 %) were the most commonly used. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a T helper 2-mediated chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects children and adults. Patients with AD are prone to recurrent infections of the skin and other organs, which can severely worsen the disease course. This review summarises the current evidence on the aetiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of infections in patients with AD. PubMed was searched for English-language research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and guidelines published until February 2023 using the key term "atopic dermatitis" and terms relevant to infections. Patients

The skin is a barrier organ populated by many types of skin-resident immune cells and sensory neurons. It has become increasingly appreciated that neuroimmune interactions are an important component of inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. Neuropeptides secreted from nerve terminals play an important role in mediating cutaneous immune cell function, and soluble mediators derived from immune cells interact with neurons to induce itch. In this review article, we will explore emerging research describing neuronal effector functions on skin immune cells i

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, systemic disease with primary cutaneous clinical manifestations and is commonly attributed to an exaggerated Th2 inflammatory response. Recent research regarding risk factors, prevention, clinical features, and management of atopic dermatitis will be reviewed.
RECENT FINDINGS: In the last decade, advances have been made in identifying the factors that either confer increased risk for or protection from atopic dermatitis and associated atopy. Progress has also been made in the clinical management of this disease. Promising biomarkers and thera

Perforating lichen nitidus is a rare subtype of lichen nitidus, with approximately 11 cases reported worldwide. Lesions typically present in young male patients at sites prone to mechanical irritation, including the hands, feet, forearms, elbows, and knees. Classic histopathologic features of perforating lichen nitidus show a lymphohistiocytic infiltrate within the papillary dermis between hyperplastic rete ridges with transepidermal elimination of dermal contents. Very few cases are reported in the literature of lichen nitidus and its association with atopic dermatitis. This is the first case

Baricitinib (Olumiant®) is an oral small molecule inhibitor of Janus kinase (JAK)1 and JAK2, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). In phase III studies in adults with moderate to severe AD who were inadequately controlled with topical corticosteroids (TCS) or systemic treatments (e.g. ciclosporin), or for whom these therapies were not advisable, baricitinib, alone or in combination with TCS, achieved significant and/or clinically relevant improvements in multiple measures of disease severity, pruritus, skin pain, sleep disturbance and health-related quality

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common itchy inflammatory skin condition that affects many individuals. For many years, the landscape of AD treatment remained unchanged; however, there has been developing therapies that directly target the underlying immunological mechanism of AD. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors are small molecules that have shown anti-inflammatory and anti-itch effects in AD. Recently, abrocitinib, an oral JAK 1 inhibitor, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration for atopic dermatitis.
AREAS COVERED: By downregulating the immune cascade, abrocitinib has demon

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive bacterium commonly found on humans, and it constitutes the skin microbiota. Presence of S. aureus in healthy individuals usually does not pose any threat, as the human body is equipped with many mechanisms to prevent pathogen invasion and infection. However, colonization of S. aureus has been correlated with many healthcare-associated infections, and has been found in people with atopic diseases. In atopic dermatitis, constant fluctuations due to inflammation of the epidermal and mucosal barriers can cause structural changes and allow foreign antigens a
