Trade-offs between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in midday gerbils (Meriones meridianus) in response to extreme temperatures.

Climate change is reshaping the thermal environment of Meriones meridianus habitats in the Mu Us Desert in China. However, the trade-off between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in this species when coping with extreme temperatures across seasons remains poorly understood. Here, we measured activity patterns and serum and brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolite levels in this rodent during summer and autumn, and analyzed their relationships with microhabitat temperatures. Behaviorally, 87.9% of extra-burrow summer activity occurred between 22:00 h and 01:00 h, while autumn act

Managing mosquito spaces: Citizen self-governance of disease vectors in a desert landscape.

Public health agencies' strategies to control disease vectors have increasingly included "soft" mosquito management programs that depend on citizen education and changing homeowner behaviors. In an effort to understand public responses to such campaigns, this research assesses the case of Tucson, Arizona, where West Nile virus presents a serious health risk and where management efforts have focused on public responsibility for mosquito control. Using surveys, interviews, and focus groups, we conclude that citizens have internalized responsibilities for mosquito management but also expect publi

The health implications of wastewater reuse in vegetable irrigation: a case study from Malamulele, South Africa.

Malamulele is located in an arid region where small-scale irrigation with wastewater is rife. A study was conducted to investigate the health implications of wastewater reuse in vegetable irrigation. Results showed that there are potential health hazards associated with this practice. The wastewater contained 103 helminth eggs/100 ml and zero helminth eggs for control group; vegetable wash water had 3 helminth eggs/100 ml for the exposed group and zero for control. The wastewater results exceeded the WHO guidelines whereas the vegetable wash water counts were within the guideline. Stool sample

The spread of tick-borne borreliosis in West Africa and its relationship to sub-Saharan drought.

In West Africa, tick-borne relapsing fever is due to the spirochete Borrelia crocidurae and its geographic distribution is classically limited to the Sahel and Saharan regions where the vector tick Alectorobius sonrai is distributed. We report results of epidemiologic investigations carried out in the Sudan savanna of Senegal where the existence of the disease was unknown. A two-year prospective investigation of a rural community indicated that 10% of the study population developed an infection during the study period. Transmission patterns of B. crocidurae to humans and the small wild mammals

Potential risk of heartworm infection in the United States of America and its projected incidence by 2100.

BACKGROUND: Heartworm disease, caused by the parasitic roundworm Dirofilaria immitis, is a vector-borne zoonosis transmitted by culicid mosquitoes and widely distributed in the USA, where prevalence is highest in the southeastern states. Transmission dynamics are influenced by environmental and anthropogenic factors, and climate change is expected to modify its distribution. Within a One Health framework, this study generates monthly and annual risk maps for heartworm transmission in the USA and projects the habitat suitability of vectors to the year 2100. METHODS: Ecological niche models wer

Comparative analysis of gut and ovarian microbiota in Dactylopius opuntiae (Hemiptera: Dactylopiidae) from distinct Moroccan regions.

INTRODUCTION: Investigating the hidden microbial world within insect hosts yields new insights into their biology, ecology, and adaptation. Dactylopius opuntiae (Cockerell), a major invasive pest of the cactus Opuntia ficus-indica, causes severe economic and ecological damage in Morocco and other arid regions. However, little is known about its associated bacterial microbiota and how it varies across environmental gradients. This study explored the bacterial diversity of D. opuntiae and evaluated how it varies across tissue types, developmental stages, and contrasting environmental regions. M

Lead (Pb) bioremediation by Sphingobium sp. RO-01 strain isolated from gold mine tailings, Atacama Desert, Chile.

This study investigated the microbiological and geochemical characteristics of gold mining tailings and assessed the potential of a Pb-tolerant bacterial strain, Sphingobium sp. RO-01, for lead (Pb) removal through biomineralization. The tailings were dominated by fine particles (average 12.3 μm) with low permeability and high leaching potential, indicating a substantial risk of heavy-metal dispersion and acid mine drainage. X-ray fluorescence analysis showed Pb concentrations of 580 ppm, exceeding the EPA limit of 400 ppm, while X-ray diffraction suggested that Pb was primarily present in amo

Purification and characterization of indochrome type blue pigment produced by Pseudarthrobacter sp. 34LCH1 isolated from Atacama desert.

The interest in and demand for natural dyes has increased significantly in recent years; however, very few natural blue dyes are commercially available, because blue colored compounds in nature are relatively rare. In this study, a blue pigment-producing bacteria from Lake Chungará (Atacama Desert, Chile) was isolated, and its blue pigment was purified and chemically characterized. The pigment-producing strain was identified as Pseudarthrobacter sp. by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The pigment was separated from the filtered culture medium by column chromatography/solid-phase extraction using diff

An outbreak of the desert sub-type of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in Jiashi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China.

Few outbreaks of the desert sub-type of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (VL) have been described worldwide. In 2008, the incidence rate of VL in Jiashi County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the western part of the People's Republic of China, increased more than twenty-folds compared to the average annual incidence rate. The majority of the cases (96.6%) occurred among <2 year-old infants. For the first time in the desert area of Xinjiang, the parasites were isolated from bone marrow aspirates, using the NNN medium culture approach. The genetic analysis of the ITS-1 nucleotide sequence in

Vulnerable microbial communities in Atacama-Altiplano wetlands: modern analogs of ancient ecosystems with implications for sustainability and conservation.

The Altiplano-Puna plateau lies at ∼4000 m above sea level in the volcanic Andes cordillera. Together with the adjacent Atacama Desert, it forms one of the most hyperarid regions on the planet. Wetlands are rare, influenced by hydrothermalism and, due to high evaporation rates, dominated by saline lakes and ephemeral ponds associated with salt flats (collectively called salares). Long thought to be lifeless, these environments host microbial ecosystems adapted to extreme conditions in terms of temperature, pH, salinity, ultraviolet radiation, and high concentrations of metals and metalloids, i

Modeling spatiotemporal dynamics of outbreaking species: influence of environment and migration in a locust.

Many pest species exhibit huge fluctuations in population abundance. Understanding their large-scale and long-term dynamics is necessary to develop effective control and management strategies. Occupancy models represent a promising approach to unravel interactions between environmental factors and spatiotemporal dynamics of outbreaking populations. Here, we investigated population dynamics of the Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera, using density data collected between 1988 and 2010 by the Australian Plague Locust Commission over more than 3 million km2 in eastern Australia. We

Carbonate formation and fluctuating habitability on Mars.

The cause of Mars's loss of surface habitability is unclear, with isotopic data suggesting a 'missing sink' of carbonate1. Past climates with surface and shallow-subsurface liquid water are recorded by Mars's sedimentary rocks, including strata in the approximately 4-km-thick record at Gale Crater2. Those waters were intermittent, spatially patchy and discontinuous, and continued remarkably late in Mars's history3-attributes that can be understood if, as on Earth, sedimentary-rock formation sequestered carbon dioxide as abundant carbonate (recently confirmed in situ at Gale4). Here we show tha

Environmental influences on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) population densities across 2 urban communities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti (Linneaus) is the vector of multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Risk of infections associated with these arboviruses continues to expand as the geographical range of Ae. aegypti extends into temperate regions. Although Ae. aegypti is abundant along the U.S.-Mexico border, the ecology of this mosquito species in this temperate/subtropical desert is not well understood. Our study objective was to estimate the seasonal population density in 2 urban communities: Sparks, El Paso, Texas and Anapra, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua,

Using genetic comparisons of populations from Arizona, Mexico, and Texas to investigate fall armyworm migration in the American southwest.

Fall armyworm (FAW) is a global agricultural pest, causing substantial economic losses in corn and many other crops. Complicating efforts to control this pest is its capacity for long distance flights, which has been described in greatest detail for the central and eastern sections of the United States. FAW infestations are also routinely found in agricultural areas in southern Arizona, which lie beyond the western limits of the mapped migratory pathways. Climate suitability analysis found that the affected Arizona locations cannot support permanent FAW populations, indicating that these FAW m
