The effects of multiple identities on psychological well-being.

The authors propose that the effects of multiple identities on psychological well-being depend on the number of identities, importance of those identities, and relationship between them. Specifically, this model predicts that when identities are highly important, having many versus few identities leads to greater psychological well-being if the identities are in harmony with each other-providing resources and expecting similar behaviors-but leads to lower psychological well-being if the identities conflict with each other-depleting resources and expecting incompatible behaviors. However, when

Stranger than fiction: literary and clinical amnesia.

This chapter broadly covers literary uses of amnesia and memory disorders. Amnesia in fiction offers authors an efficient and dramatic device to tackle themes such as identity, personal liberty, or guilt. We argue against the common complaint that fictional amnesia is scientifically inaccurate, pointing out that the goals of literature are different from those of science, that amnesia is still poorly understood, and that real-life cases can sometimes be stranger than fiction. The chapter provides examples from the neuropsychological literature, media reports, mythology, historical cases, detec

[Psychogenic disorders: concepts, terminology and classification].

The neurological interest on functional or psychogenic disorders (mental or physical disturbances with no organic basis, generally unleashed by stressful situations) has been receiving increasingly more interest over the last few years. In this article we review concepts, terms and classifications of these disorders, very different over time and among different authors. Psychogenic disorders are divided into: a) dissociation (with memory, consciousness and self-identity impairment), and b) disturbances with somatizations, divided into somatoform (unconscious), factitious (voluntary search for

What the study of voice recognition in normal subjects and brain-damaged patients tells us about models of familiar people recognition.

In recent years it has been shown that a disorder in recognizing familiar people can be observed in patients with lesions affecting the anterior parts of the temporal lobes and that these disorders can be multi-modal, simultaneously affecting the visual, auditory and linguistic channels that allow person identification. Several authors have also shown that patients with right anterior temporal atrophy are more impaired in assessing familiarity and in retrieving person-specific semantic information from faces than from names, whereas the opposite pattern of performance can be observed in patien

Was that really me? Relationships between memory and sense of self in people with maladaptive daydreaming.

OBJECTIVES: A cohesive sense of self depends on intact autobiographical memory, both of which are impaired in dissociative disorders. Maladaptive daydreaming (MD), a recently proposed dissociative condition, involves excessive immersion in fantastical inner worlds, often at the expense of real-life engagement, leading to distress and functional impairment. The present study aimed to examine whether maladaptive daydreamers' persistent focus on imagined events and an idealized self, alongside reduced attention to real experiences, may create confusion, impair memory, and ultimately disrupt self-

Negative affective responses to positive events and stimuli in patients with complex dissociative disorders: a mixed-methods pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that individuals exposed to (childhood) trauma are not only unable to experience pleasure, known as hedonic deficit (HD), but also experience 'negative affective responses to positive events', known as negative affective interference (NAI). The clinical relevance and prognostic features of NAI have increasingly been recognized. To date, no studies have focused on NAI in patients with complex dissociative disorders (CDDs) who were abused early in life. OBJECTIVE: In this pilot study, we quantitatively and qualitatively investigated how NAI is related to trauma-rel

Visual body recognition in a prosopagnosic patient.

Conspicuous deficits in face recognition characterize prosopagnosia. Information on whether agnosic deficits may extend to non-facial body parts is lacking. Here we report the neuropsychological description of FM, a patient affected by a complete deficit in face recognition in the presence of mild clinical signs of visual object agnosia. His deficit involves both overt and covert recognition of faces (i.e. recognition of familiar faces, but also categorization of faces for gender or age) as well as the visual mental imagery of faces. By means of a series of matching-to-sample tasks we investig

Comparing shame in clinical and nonclinical populations: Preliminary findings.

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a preliminary study comparing different trauma and clinical populations on types of shame coping style and levels of state shame and guilt. METHODS: A mixed independent groups/correlational design was employed. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling of 3 clinical populations-complex trauma (n = 65), dissociative identity disorder (DID; n = 20), and general mental health (n = 41)-and a control group of healthy volunteers (n = 125). All participants were given (a) the Compass of Shame Scale, which measures the four common shame coping behaviors/styles of "wit

[Symptoms of DSM IV borderline personality disorder in a nonclinical population of adolescents: study of a series of 35 patients].

1,363 high school students were solicited to complete a personality disorder questionnaire and were encouraged to continue in the study by signing up for interviews with Master's level psychology students. 107 students (7.8%, 34 males, 73 females, mean age = 16.7 +/- 1.8) manifested themselves for the interview and were assessed by using structured diagnostic interviews for borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder (DIB-R, Revised Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines; MINI, Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview). The interviews were audiotaped. Interrater reliabilit

Has multiple personality disorder remained consistent over time? A comparison of past and recent cases.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether recent descriptions of multiple personality disorder are consistent with descriptions from the past. Clinical presentations and childhood histories obtained from early case reports of multiple personality disorder published between 1800 and 1965 (N = 52) were compared with recent case reports published in the 1980s (N = 54). Recent and past cases did not differ in age at diagnosis, length of treatment, duration of follow-up, presence of child and opposite gender personalities, and exposure to hypnosis. Recent cases differed significantly from

Triple network alteration predicts dissociative symptoms following activation of the attachment system: Evidence from an EEG connectivity study.

Dissociation is a psychological response to stress that impairs mental integration, identity, and consciousness and manifests itself in the form of detachment and compartmentalization. Such symptoms are common in psychiatric disorders and reflect altered brain connectivity. In this study, EEG connectivity at rest, before and after activation of the attachment system, was analysed in relation to the two forms of dissociation. The study included 98 participants (55 women, mean age 22.7 ± 6.9 years) who completed clinical/socio-demographic questionnaires and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes test

Personality disorder traits, maladaptive schemas, modes and coping styles in participants with complex dissociative disorders, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The schema mode model offers a new conceptualisation of complex dissociative disorders (CDD) as it explains shifts between identities as shifts between schema modes. Furthermore, in this model CDD is conceived as personality pathology, incorporating core features of personality disorders. This study tested the assumptions of this schema mode model of CDD. METHOD: Questionnaires measuring personality disorder traits, schemas, schema modes and coping styles were filled out by patients with CDD, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder (N = 210), and their sco

Borderline personality disorder: does its clinical features show specificity to differing developmental risk factors?

OBJECTIVES: To determine if differing developmental factors show specificity to differing manifestations of borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: A clinical sample of 73 females diagnosed with BPD undertook a psychiatrist interview and completed self-report questionnaires, including the semi-structured Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders (DIPD-IV) assessing for BPD status. A set of negative and potentially traumatic developmental factors were included in the assessment. RESULTS: Childhood sexual abuse, affirmed by 49% of the sample, showed specificity in being lin

New Glucocorticosteroids with an improved therapeutic ratio?

Glucocorticoids (GCs) remain the most effective therapy for inflammatory disorders. In terms of asthma, topical steroids are the mainstay for controlling the inflammatory component of the disease. However, their use is limited by the constellation of adverse effects associated with chronic, oral steroid use and the long-term adverse effects associated with inhaled steroid use. These include suppression of hypothalamic--pituitary axis, osteoporosis, reduced bone growth in the young, opportunistic infections, behavioural alterations, and disorders of lipid metabolism. Most of these effects may b

"When Standard Treatments Are Not Enough" - Showcasing Schema Therapy for the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa and Borderline Personality Disorder.

Whilst standard cognitive and behavioural treatments lead to clinical improvement for approximately half of the people with eating disorders, preliminary evidence indicates that complex comorbidity, including personality difficulties, insecure attachment patterns and Posttraumatic stress disorder, may hinder treatment engagement and outcomes. Such comorbidities tend to be associated with increased emotional dysregulation, rigidity of beliefs, and dissociation. Schema Therapy is a transdiagnostic approach that interweaves the treatment of current eating disorder symptomatology and comorbid pres

Treatment progress in 20 patients with multiple personality disorder.

Attempts to follow the treatment progress of patients with multiple personality have been limited to a few single case studies and, in the only large series, to those most successfully treated. This study followed the treatment progress of 20 patients for a mean of 39 months after intake. The study included a detailed history, neurological examination, and psychological testing on each patient. At follow-up each patient was interviewed and a questionnaire was completed by his or her therapist to assess treatment response. Although nine patients achieved partial or full integration, complete in

Selective encoding failure of self-face identity in subthreshold depression.

Subthreshold depression is associated with significant functional impairment and elevated risk of major depressive disorder. A negative self-concept may disrupt the implicit positive association evoked by one's own face, impairing incidental encoding of self-relevant information. Whether subthreshold depression involves a selective deficit in encoding self-face identity remains unclear. The attribute amnesia paradigm is well suited to address this question because it can dissociate attentional selection from working memory encoding. Using this paradigm, we examined the issue across two experim

[Background and psychological impact of organised and ritual child sexual abuse: Reports to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in Germany].

OBJECTIVE: Organised child sexual abuse is characterised by commercial exploitation of children and adolescents by networking perpetrator groups. Ritual abuse is further characterised by ideological frameworks (e.g., cults). METHODS: Forty-one confidential hearings and written reports, gathered by the German Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse from individuals as well as contemporary witnesses subjected to organised and ritual abuse (ORA) were analysed by means of a quantitative content analysis. RESULTS: Right-wing extremist, Satanist and religious ideologies were most frequently de

Empowering narratives: aid to self-help for Ukrainian refugees: a randomized controlled trial of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) delivered by supervised Ukrainian health workers in Norway.

Background: The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in forced displacement, with over six million Ukrainian refugees across Europe, of whom 81,770 are residing in Norway. This displacement and, in many cases, preceding war experiences, has led to increased vulnerability to trauma and mental health challenges. There is to date little knowledge about the extent to which structured mental health interventions can mitigate symptoms in Ukrainian refugees. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), a short-term trauma-focused intervention, has demonstrated efficacy in reducing post-traumatic stress diso

Capturing the experience of borderline personality disorder symptoms in the daily lives of women with eating disorders.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is highly comorbid with eating disorders (EDs), and comorbid ED-BPD is associated with a worse clinical presentation and treatment outcomes. Understanding how BPD symptoms manifest in the daily lives of those with EDs and predict momentary ED symptoms has important treatment implications. This study: (a) compared the nine BPD symptoms, assessed across 14 days, in individuals with comorbid ED-BPD, only an ED, and no ED; and (b) examined average and momentary relationships between BPD symptoms and specific ED symptoms (i.e., binge eating, purging, restrictio
