Cognitive and dynamic effects of training given to women at risk of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is an important public health problem. Although the disease is widespread, the prognosis is good, especially with early diagnosis. For this to occur, a consciousness of protection of breast health for all women is necessary, and risk groups need to be particularly targeted. AIM: This study was conducted to determine dynamic and cognitive effects of training given to women in a risk group. METHOD: This study that is planned as an intervention study has been carried out in a city that is on the eastern part of Turkey between February and June in 2009. The data were ga

Two 4-Week Balance-Training Programs for Chronic Ankle Instability.

CONTEXT: Traditional single-limb balance (SLB) and progressive dynamic balance-training programs for those with chronic ankle instability (CAI) have been evaluated in the literature. However, which training program may be more beneficial is not known. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of a progressive hop-to-stabilization balance (PHSB) program compared with an SLB program on self-reported function, dynamic postural control, and joint position sense (JPS) where angle and direction were self-reported by participants with CAI. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: A singl

An Experiential Approach to Canine-Assisted Learning in Corrections for Prisoners Who Use Substances.

Canine-assisted interventions are a promising approach to help address substance use and mental health issues in prisons. However, canine-assisted interventions in prisons have not been well explored in relation to experiential learning (EL) theory, despite canine-assisted interventions and EL aligning in many ways. In this article, we discuss a canine-assisted learning and wellness program guided by EL for prisoners with substance use issues in Western Canada. Letters written by participants to the dogs at the conclusion of the program suggest that such programming can help shift relational d

Comparison of trunk activity during gait initiation and walking in humans.

To understand the role of trunk muscles in maintenance of dynamic postural equilibrium we investigate trunk movements during gait initiation and walking, performing trunk kinematics analysis, Erector spinae muscle (ES) recordings and dynamic analysis. ES muscle expressed a metachronal descending pattern of activity during walking and gait initiation. In the frontal and horizontal planes, lateroflexion and rotation occur before in the upper trunk and after in the lower trunk. Comparison of ES muscle EMGs and trunk kinematics showed that trunk muscle activity precedes corresponding kinematics ac

Early protected motion after extensor tendon repair.

Thirty hands with 50 extensor tendon lacerations, excluding mallet finger injuries, were examined. They were treated with surgical repair followed by immediate motion which included a dynamic splinting and tendon mobilization program. The average follow-up period was 7 months (range, 8 weeks to 2 years). Forty-five of the 50 tendons regained full range of motion (average total active motion, 262 degrees) within an average time of 9 weeks; the remaining 5 tendons had extension lags of < or = 10 degrees. All patients regained at least 93% of their predicted normal strength within 9 to 12 weeks a

The impact of 12 weeks combined resistance and balance training on functional Sit-To-Stand muscle power in mobility limited older patients.

BACKGROUND: Falls become more frequent with ageing. Improving balance and muscle strength has been shown to reduce the risk of falls in older patients, but the importance of muscle power is less investigated. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in functional Sit-to-Stand muscle power and the association with dynamic balance in older adults following a 12-week exercise program. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study including 84 (69 women) with a mean age of 79.3 years were included. Based on the 30s-STS performance, relative muscle power (W*kg-1) and allometric muscle power (W*m-2) was calcu

The potential of using E. coli as an indicator for the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the environment.

To understand the dynamics of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), in a One-Health perspective, surveillance play an important role. Monitoring systems already exist in the human health and livestock sectors, but there are no environmental monitoring programs. Therefore there is an urgent need to initiate environmental AMR monitoring programs nationally and globally, which will complement existing systems in different sectors. However, environmental programs should not only identify anthropogenic influences and levels of AMR, but they should also allow for identification of transmissions to and fro

Final program evaluation methods and results of a National Lymphedema Management Program in Togo, West Africa.

In order to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) as a public health problem, the World Health Assembly recommends an approach which includes interruption of transmission of infection and the alleviation of morbidity. In 2000, the Togolese National Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (PNELF) started the annual mass drug administrations and in 2007, the program added a morbidity component for the management of lymphedema. This manuscript describes the methods of an evaluation aimed at assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the Togolese National Lymphedema Morbidity Program. The evaluatio

In silico screen identifies Pranidipine as a potential inhibitor of the PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint.

Immune checkpoint blockade targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 axis using monoclonal antibodies has revolutionized cancer therapy by inducing durable antitumor responses across multiple cancer types. However, antibody-based therapeutics suffer from several limitations, including poor tissue permeability, immune-related adverse effects, complex manufacturing processes, and high production costs. These challenges underscore the need for small-molecule inhibitors (SMIs) as alternative therapeutic agents; nevertheless, to date, no FDA-approved small molecule has demonstrated proven in vivo efficacy against t

Relating counselor attributes to client engagement in England.

Client functioning and treatment engagement were examined in relation to staff attributes and organizational climate across a diverse sample of drug treatment and outreach programs in England. Self-rating assessments were obtained from 1,539 clients and 439 counselors representing 44 programs, and results were interpreted using comparable data from studies of treatment programs in the United States. Client scores on treatment participation and counseling rapport in England were directly related to their higher levels of motivation and psychosocial functioning, as well as to staff ratings of pr

Maternal Swimming Exercise Induces Sex-Dependent Changes in Mitochondrial Metabolism and Dynamics in the Cerebellum of Wistar Rat Offspring.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The field of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) investigates how environmental interventions during critical periods of development can permanently modify offspring metabolism. In this context, beneficial interventions such as maternal physical exercise during pregnancy may program offspring metabolism and act as a protective metabolic programming strategy linked to positive phenotypic plasticity. However, the cellular mechanisms underlying the effects of maternal exercise during pregnancy on the offspring remain to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to

Aquatic training for ankle instability.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the present study was to evaluate balance deficits after an ankle sprain in collegiate students and to examine the effectiveness of 2 different balance rehabilitation programs on balance ability. Thirty collegiate students with functional ankle instability were randomly divided into 2 groups. Both groups followed an intervention balance program for 6 weeks, 3 times per week, 20 minutes per session, using balance boards. One of the 2 training groups performed the exercises on the ground-the "Land" group (n = 15), and the other in a swimming pool-the "Aquatic" group (n = 1

Does frequent residential mobility in early years affect the uptake and timeliness of routine immunisations? An anonymised cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are conflicting findings regarding the impact of residential mobility on immunisation status. Our aim was to determine whether there was any association between residential mobility and take up of immunisations and whether they were delayed in administration. METHODS: We carried out a cohort analysis of children born in Wales, UK. Uptake and time of immunisation were collected electronically. We defined frequent movers as those who had moved: 2 or more times in the period prior to the final scheduled on-time date (4 months) for 5 in 1 vaccinations; and 3 or more times in the

Domestic dog demographic structure and dynamics relevant to rabies control planning in urban areas in Africa: the case of Iringa, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Mass vaccinations of domestic dogs have been shown to effectively control canine rabies and hence human exposure to rabies. Knowledge of dog population demography is essential for planning effective rabies vaccination programmes; however, such information is still rare for African domestic dog populations, particularly so in urban areas. This study describes the demographic structure and population dynamics of a domestic dog population in an urban sub-Saharan African setting. In July to November 2005, we conducted a full household-level census and a cross-sectional dog demography s

The interplay between interpersonal dynamics, treatment barriers, and larger social forces: an exploratory study of drug-using couples in Hartford, CT.

BACKGROUND: The drug treatment field tends to place emphasis on the individual rather than the individual in social context. While there are a growing number of studies indicating that drug-using intimate partners are likely to play an important role in determining treatment options, little attention has been given to the experience and complex treatment needs of illicit drug-using (heroin, cocaine, crack) couples. METHODS: This exploratory study used in-depth interviews and ethnographic engagement to better understand the relationship between interpersonal dynamics and the treatment experien

Differential Response and the Reduction of Child Maltreatment and Foster Care Services Utilization in the U.S. From 2004 to 2017.

By 2014, the majority of U.S. states had implemented differential response (DR), a system policy that seeks to serve families of low-to moderate-risk for child maltreatment through family engagement, diversion from formal child protective services investigations, and service provision. However, the effects of DR programs on child welfare dynamics have yet to be evaluated nationally using causal methods. Using a quasi-experimental study design with data drawn from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System from 2004 to 2017, we found states with DR programs had approximately 19% fewer sub

Coordinated transcriptional shifts in microglia and oligodendrocytes from neurodevelopment to inflammaging.

Glial cells shape brain development and aging, yet whether distinct glial lineages undergo coordinated lifespan transitions remains unclear. Although microglial aging states and oligodendrocyte vulnerability in neurodegeneration are well described, it remains unclear whether these programs evolve independently or in a temporally related manner. Here, we analyzed Mouse Cell Atlas single-cell RNA-seq data spanning embryogenesis to 24 months. Microglia and oligodendrocytes were the most transcriptionally dynamic glial populations, whereas astrocyte module activity was primarily observed during de
