Classification of Newborn Ear Malformations and their Treatment with the EarWell Infant Ear Correction System.

BACKGROUND: A single practice's treatment protocol and outcomes following molding therapy on newborn ear deformations and malformations with the EarWell Infant Ear Correction System were reviewed. A classification system for grading the severity of constricted ear malformations was created on the basis of anatomical findings. METHODS: A retrospective chart/photograph review of a consecutive series of infants treated with the EarWell System from 2011 to 2014 was undertaken. The infants were placed in either deformation or malformation groups. Three classes of malformation were identified. Data

Preliminary observations on isotretinoin-induced ear malformations and pattern formation of the external ear.

Retinoic acid is a morphogenic substance capable of inducing a variety of limb malformations, including duplications and reduction-type defects. Whether retinoic acid plays a similar role in controlling pattern formation of other vertebrate structures is unclear. Many fetuses and infants exposed to isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) in utero have a characteristic pattern of anomalies, chiefly involving brain, craniofacial, and thymic morphogenesis. Among the craniofacial anomalies, external ear malformations are common and the specific types of auricular malformations include partial duplicat

The behavior of acoustic distortion products in the ear canals of chinchillas with normal or damaged ears.

Acoustic intermodulation distortion products were measured in 15 ear canals of chinchillas with normal or damaged ears. Pretreatment results showed that when two primary tones at frequencies f1 and f2, f1 less than f2, were presented at levels from 30 to 90 dB SPL, acoustic distortion products at 2f1-f2 and 2f2-f1 were 30 to 50 dB below primary-tone levels. Noise exposures that caused temporary or permanent hearing loss produced corresponding temporary or permanent reductions in distortion-product levels. Mechanical damage to the cochlea or middle ear reduced the distortion-product levels to b

Integration of 3D-printed middle ear models and middle ear prostheses in otosurgical training.

BACKGROUND: In otosurgical training, cadaveric temporal bones are primarily used to provide a realistic tactile experience. However, using cadaveric temporal bones is challenging due to their limited availability, high cost, and potential for infection. Utilizing current three-dimensional (3D) technologies could overcome the limitations associated with cadaveric bones. This study focused on how a 3D-printed middle ear model can be used in otosurgical training. METHODS: A cadaveric temporal bone was imaged using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to generate a 3D model of the middle ear. The

Inner ear barotrauma and inner ear decompression sickness: a systematic review on differential diagnostics.

INTRODUCTION: Inner ear barotrauma (IEBt) and inner ear decompression sickness (IEDCS) are the two dysbaric inner ear injuries associated with diving. Both conditions manifest as cochleovestibular symptoms, causing difficulties in differential diagnosis and possibly delaying (or leading to inappropriate) treatment. METHODS: This was a systematic review of IEBt and IEDCS cases aiming to define diving and clinical variables that help differentiate these conditions. The search strategy consisted of a preliminary search, followed by a systematic search covering three databases (PubMed, Medline, S

Ear deformity in children following high ear-piercing: current practice, consent issues and legislation.

In this presentation we examine the practice of high ear-piercing in children, the issue of informed consent and current legislation. We sampled current practice and consent policy by visiting nine establishments in Sheffield providing this service. There were two high street department stores, two fashion accessory outlets and five body-piercing studios. Enquiries were made as to the technique used, knowledge of complications, customer counselling and consent policy. A photograph of an ear with a cosmetic deformity following high ear-piercing was shown and awareness of this possible outcome w

Long-term middle-ear effects of middle-ear/eustachian tube packing after translabyrinthine surgery.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effect on middle ear and eustachian tube function following the packing of the middle-ear space to prevent cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhoea at the termination of translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma removal. This was an observational study of a sample of 14 patients examined between two and five years post-operatively. Photo-otoscopy and tympanometry were performed bilaterally to evaluate appearance and function. All operated middle ears were air-containing although eight out of 14 showed scarring as evidence of operative intervention.

Ear ossicle morphology of the Jurassic euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya and evolution of mammalian middle ear.

The middle ear bones of Mesozoic mammals are rarely preserved as fossils and the morphology of these ossicles in the earliest mammals remains poorly known. Here, we report the stapes and incus of the euharamiyidan Arboroharamiya from the lower Upper Jurassic (∼160 Ma) of northern China, which represent the earliest known mammalian middle ear ossicles. Both bones are miniscule in relation to those in non-mammalian cynodonts. The skull length/stapedial footplate diameter ratio is estimated as 51.74 and the stapes length as the percentage of the skull length is 4%; both numbers fall into the stap

Congenital malformations of the middle ear with an intact external ear: a review of 38 cases.

Adrenal malignancies include adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) and pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL), rare endocrine tumors that share an adrenal or extra-adrenal location but differ substantially in origin, hormonal activity, molecular alterations, metastatic potential, and systemic treatment. In ACC, management is guided by stage, resectability, Ki-67, hormone secretion, tumor volume, and pace of progression. Mitotane remains the central ACC-specific therapy, used according to recurrence risk after surgery and as monotherapy in selected patients with advanced, low-volume disease. When rapid

Antibodies against inner-ear proteins in the sera of patients with inner-ear diseases.

Sera from patients with various inner-ear diseases, especially Ménière's disease, were investigated by Western blot against guinea pig inner-ear proteins. Of 45 patients, 24 (53%) with various inner-ear diseases had antibodies against inner-ear proteins, compared with 0 of 10 (0%) in control subjects without inner-ear diseases. Of the 10 proteins that showed a positive reaction with patient sera, the 28-kD band was unique in that it appeared only in the membranous fraction of the inner ear and was highly positive (28%) in reaction with Ménière's disease patient sera. The results in the present

Otoacoustic emissions in children with normal ears, middle ear dysfunction, and ventilating tubes.

The clinical utility of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) has been well established in adults. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the efficacy of OAE testing in children. Distortion-product OAE (DPOAE) audiograms, response/growth functions, and transiently evoked OAEs elicited with clicks were measured from the ears of both healthy volunteers, aged 4 to 13 years, and children with confirmed middle ear disorders. These measures established the means and variabilities for DPOAE and noise-floor amplitudes of normal and diseased young ears. Compared with adult emissions, the healthy you
