The role of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in pain severity, interference, and variability after sexual assault: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Pain is common after sexual assault and may be influenced by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, little research has tested these associations in the early aftermath of sexual assault. The current study used ecological momentary assessment collected in the context of a randomized clinical trial to test temporal associations between PTSD symptoms and usual pain and highest pain severity, as well as pain variability. Hypotheses were tested among 64 women sexual assault survivors presenting for emergency care who were followed over 6 weeks with 4×/day ecological momentary asse

Identifying the role of (dis)inhibition in the vicious cycle of substance use through ecological momentary assessment and resting-state fMRI.

Functional inhibition is known to improve treatment outcomes in substance use disorder (SUD), potentially through craving management enabled by underlying cerebral integrity. Whereas treatment is challenged by a multitude of substances that patients often use, no study has yet unraveled if inhibition and related cerebral integrity could prevent relapse from multiples substances, that is, one's primary drug of choice and secondary ones. Individuals with primary alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use disorders completed intensive Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) coupled with resting-state functi

An ecological momentary cognitive assessment study of over-attribution of threat and suicide risk factors in people with serious mental illness.

INTRODUCTION: People with serious mental illness (SMI; schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder) are at increased risk of suicidal ideation (SI). Over-attribution of social threat, or attributing threatening emotions to neutral faces, may contribute to social isolation through increased social avoidance and decreased social approach motivation. These factors are related to suicide, as well as perceived burdensomeness (PB) and thwarted belongingness (TB). This study examined how over-attribution of threat relates to PB, TB, and social motivations. METHOD: N = 273 participants

Within-Person Associations of Accelerometer-Assessed Physical Activity With Time-Varying Determinants in Older Adults: Time-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of physical activity (PA) interventions, many older adults are still not active enough. This might be partially explained by the often-limited effects of PA interventions. In general, health behavior change interventions often do not focus on contextual and time-varying determinants, which may limit their effectiveness. However, before the dynamic tailoring of interventions can be developed, one should know which time-dependent determinants are associated with PA and how strong these associations are. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine within-

Nomothetic and idiographic determinants of dietary lapses and adherence: an exploratory mixed methods ecological momentary assessment study of open-text responses.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary interventions often fail to achieve sustained behavior change, partly due to limited understanding of momentary factors driving dietary lapses and instances of goal adherence. Given constrained item pools in ecological momentary assessment (EMA), it remains unclear which factors are most relevant to individuals in daily life. This study therefore examined dieters' self-reported momentary reasons for lapses and adherence and whether these are broadly applicable (nomothetic) or individual-specific (idiographic). METHODS: Data were drawn from two EMA studies (N = 199) in which

The real-time interplay between identity, emptiness, and nonsuicidal self-injury ideation: An ecological momentary assessment study in treatment-seeking individuals.

Although research has shown that individuals with identity difficulties are at greater risk of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), less is known about the associations between identity, emptiness, and NSSI ideation in daily life. This study addressed this gap using an ecological momentary assessment design with six daily EMA surveys for 28 days in a treatment-seeking sample of 123 adolescents and adults (mean age = 23.07, SD = 5.32), yielding a total of 14,776 longitudinal assessments (median compliance = 77.4%). Results showed that lower-than-usual momentary identity synthesis and higher-than-usu

Affective States and Ultra-Processed Food Intake in Youth With Overweight or Obesity: Evidence From Laboratory and Ecological Momentary Assessment Studies.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are increasingly prevalent in children's diets and linked to adverse health outcomes, yet factors driving UPF intake in youth remain unclear. Negative affect may be one factor. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between affective states and UPF intake in youth with overweight or obesity, using a laboratory study and a naturalistic study. METHODS: Study 1 included 46 girls (7-12 years) who completed counterbalanced negative and neutral mood inductions, followed by ad libitum access to a buffet of UPFs and minimally processed foods. Study 2 included 38

Feeling socially connected to others is linked to better emotion regulation in adolescent girls' daily lives: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Developing effective emotion regulation ability to manage negative emotion (NE) is critical during adolescence. Social baseline theory posits social connectedness may impact adolescents' everyday emotion regulation. This study examined the relation between social connectedness and NE after a negative social interaction (emotion regulation) and whether contextual factors moderate the association. Adolescent girls (N = 114; Mage = 12.26, SD = 0.8) from a midsized Midwestern U.S. city (67.5% White, 19.3% Black/African American, 9.6% biracial, 1.8% Asian, 1.8% Native American/other race; 8.8% Lati

Multivariate prediction of temper outbursts in a sample of youth enriched for irritability using ecological momentary assessment data: A registered report.

Irritability and temper outbursts are among the most common reasons youth are referred for psychiatric assessment and care. Identifying in vivo clinical variables that precede the onset of temper outbursts would provide valuable clinical utility. Here, we provide the rationale for a study testing the performance of a classifier trained to predict temper outbursts in a group of clinically-referred youth presenting with symptoms of irritability and temper outbursts. Due to the large sample sizes needed for multivariate classification studies, here, we demonstrated the feasibility of our approach

Psychological risk factors and resources for low back pain intensity and back health in daily life: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a highly prevalent and disabling health condition. Identifying risk factors and resources for low back pain (LBP) and back health in everyday life is crucial for its prevention and management. This study examined moment-to-moment fluctuations in pain intensity and perceived back health and their associations with fear of movement, pain self-efficacy, and leisure-time physical activity in individuals with (n = 128) and without (n = 94) cLBP. Data were collected five times per day for 14 days (nmeasurements = 13,292). Participants with cLBP reported experiencing L

Evidence for mood instability in patients with bipolar disorder: Applying multilevel hidden Markov modeling to intensive longitudinal ecological momentary assessment data.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by large episodic changes in mood and energy. Recently, BD has been proposed to be conceptualized as chronic cyclical mood instability, as opposed to the traditional view of alternating discrete episodes with stable periods in-between. Recognizing this mood instability may improve care and call for high-frequency measures coupled with advanced statistical models. To uncover empirically derived mood states, a multilevel hidden Markov model (HMM) was applied to 4-month ecological momentary assessment data in 20 patients with

Sleep and day-to-day PTSD symptom variability: an ecological momentary assessment and actigraphy monitored study in trauma-exposed young adults.

BACKGROUND: Disrupted sleep and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are bi-directionally linked and have been found to mutually reinforce each other on a day-to-day basis. However, most of the previous research has focused on subjective measures of sleep only. OBJECTIVE: Here, we investigated the temporal relationship between sleep and PTSD symptoms using both subjective (sleep diary) and objective measures of sleep (actigraphy). METHODS: Forty-one non-treatment seeking, trauma exposed young adults (age M = 24.68, SD = 8.15) with a range of PTSD symptom severities (PTSS, 0-53 on PCL-5) wer

Evidence for avolition in bipolar disorder? A 30-day ecological momentary assessment comparison of daily activities in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Disability is common in bipolar disorder (BD) and predicted by persistent sadness. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine daily activities in people with BD and schizophrenia. We classified activities as productive, unproductive, or passive recreation, relating them to momentary sadness, location, and social context. METHODS: 71 people with BD and 102 people with schizophrenia were sampled 3 times/day for 30 days with an EMA survey. Each survey asked where they were, with whom, what they were doing, and if they were sad. RESULTS: People with BD were home more th

Examining intra-individual variability in food-related inhibitory control and negative affect as predictors of binge eating using ecological momentary assessment.

Binge eating presents in the context of several eating disorders (EDs) and has been shown to be associated with negative affectivity and inhibitory control deficits. While considerable ecological momentary assessment (EMA) work in EDs has demonstrated the importance of intra-individual variability in affect in predicting binge episodes, no research has considered how fluctuations in inhibitory control and negative affect together influence binge eating, or the extent to which these relationships may differ across ED diagnoses. Therefore, the present EMA study assessed the extent to which daily

Daily factors driving daily substance use and chronic pain among older adults with HIV: An exploratory study using ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Adults 50 and older make up approximately 50% of persons living with HIV. Multiple co-morbidities are common among this group, including chronic pain and substance abuse, yet little is known about the daily factors that either enhance or inhibit these experiences or behaviors. This study explored daily drivers of substance use, pain, and relief from pain among older adults living with HIV utilizing ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHOD: Participants (N = 55), ages 49-71, completed seven consecutive days of daily EMA online surveys prior to treatment initiation within a ran

The Impact of Expectations and Framing on the course of Symptom Severity in Somatic Symptom Disorder-Ecological Momentary Assessment from the SOMA.SSD Study.

PURPOSE: Symptom expectations are considered contributing mechanisms for underlying persistent somatic symptoms in somatic symptom disorder. Expectation framing has been suggested as a promising technique to modify expectations. However, the short-term interplay between symptom expectations, expectation framing, and symptom severity in patients with somatic symptom disorder remains unexplored. METHODS: In this study, 217 patients with somatic symptom disorder participated in a 10-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment. Participants were randomized to one of two expectation frami

Mood in the moment: a study protocol for embedding ecological momentary assessments into established longitudinal cohorts to examine depression in real time.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is a major global health challenge, with onset commonly occurring in youth. There is an urgent need to better understand the epidemiology of depression to facilitate better interventions and preventions that are person-specific and time-specific. Long-term depression trajectories and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) can help address this need. Embedding EMA designs within established longitudinal cohorts offers a uniquely powerful approach to examine depression in both long- and short-term settings and to identify distal and proximal modifiable risk factors for de
