Gambling in Transition: Assessing Youth Narratives of Gambling in Nigeria.

Nigeria has witnessed some significant changes in gambling which have resulted in more people becoming interested in the activity. In an attempt to increase participation, bookmakers have introduced a variety of innovations. Literature has established that this increased participation is inter-generational, cross-cultural, and inter-religious. Particularly among Nigerian youth, participation in gambling cuts across all age groups, socio-economic status, and gender. Both financial and social rewards have been identified as reasons why many youths gamble. Through a qualitative lens, this study i

Increasing socio-economic inequalities in drug-induced deaths in Australia: 1981-2002.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Since the 1990s illicit drug use death rates in Australia have increased markedly. There is a notable gap in knowledge about changing socio-economic inequalities in drug use death rates. Some limited Australian and overseas data point to higher rates of drug death in the lowest socio-economic groups, but the paucity of available studies and their sometimes conflicting findings need to be addressed. DESIGN AND METHODS: This paper uses data obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to examine changes in age-standardised drug-induced mortality rates for Austr

An Enhanced Approach for Economic Evaluation of Long-Term Benefits of School-Based Health Promotion Programs.

Chronic diseases constitute a tremendous public health burden globally. Poor nutrition, inactive lifestyles, and obesity are established independent risk factors for chronic diseases. Public health decision-makers are in desperate need of effective and cost-effective programs that prevent chronic diseases. To date, most economic evaluations consider the effect of these programs on body weight, without considering their effects on other risk factors (nutrition and physical activity). We propose an economic evaluation approach that considers program effects on multiple risk factors rather than o

Socio-economic inequality in the prevalence of violence against older adults - findings from India.

BACKGROUND: Violence against older adults is a well-recognised socio-psychological and public health problem. It is uncared-for, undiagnosed, and an untreated problem that is widespread across both developed and developing countries. The present paper aims to understand the extent of the socio-economic status related inequality in violence against older adults in India. METHODS: The study uses data from Building a Knowledge Base on Population Aging in India (BKPAI). Violence against older adults is the outcome variable for the study and is defined as older adults who faced any abuse or violen

The vitamin status of Viennese school children aged 11-12 years.

In 830 Viennese school children of both sexes, aged 11-12 years, plasma carotene, retinol and alpha-tocopherol, erythrocyte transketolase activity (alpha ETK), erythrocyte glutathione-reductase (alpha EGR) and erythrocyte glutamic acid oxalacetic acid transaminase (alpha EGOT) were determined. The mean alpha ETK value indicated inadequate thiamine supply. The vitamin status was better in boys and in children of higher socio-economic classes than in girls and in the low income group, with respect to beta-carotene, retinol, tocopherol, thiamine and riboflavin. The opposite situation was true in

Psychological Factors That Suppress Help-Seeking among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Living Alone.

Help-seeking among destitute adults has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, this study clarifies the mechanisms that suppress help-seeking in middle-aged and older adults living alone. Data were collected from 1274 individuals (aged 50-79 years) who were living alone, using a survey that measured future time perspective, barriers to help-seeking, help-seeking intentions, and current and childhood economic statuses. Men living alone experienced lower help-seeking intention than women, were more likely to try to solve problems by themselves, and experienced greater distrust in others. N

Economic inequality caused by feedbacks between poverty and the dynamics of a rare tropical disease: the case of Buruli ulcer in sub-Saharan Africa.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have received increasing attention in recent years by the global heath community, as they cumulatively constitute substantial burdens of disease as well as barriers for economic development. A number of common tropical diseases such as malaria, hookworm or schistosomiasis have well-documented economic impacts. However, much less is known about the population-level impacts of diseases that are rare but associated with high disability burden, which represent a great number of tropical diseases. Using an individual-based model of Buruli ulcer (BU), we demonstrat

[A study on the general public understanding and utilization of Korean traditional medicine in colonial period].

During Colonial Period, Western Medicine was introduced, and due to the lean-to-one-side policy by the Japanese, Western Medicine became the mainstream medical science while Oriental Medicine was pushed to the outskirts. The general public in colonial period got help from medical profession after they tried something they could do at home when they got sick or injured. There were differences to get help from western or traditional medicine according to their economic status, living area, and educational status, the character of disease or injury, etc. In general, public made more use of tradit

Do trends in the prevalence of overweight by socio-economic position differ between India's most and least economically developed states?

BACKGROUND: India's economic development and urbanisation in recent decades has varied considerably between states. Attempts to assess how overweight (including obesity) varies by socioeconomic position at the national level may mask considerable sub-national heterogeneity. We examined the socioeconomic patterning of overweight among adults in India's most and least economically developed states between 1998 and 2016. METHODS: We used state representative data from the National Family Health Surveys from 1998 to 99, 2005-06 and 2015-16. We estimated the prevalence of overweight by socioeconom

Exploring poverty: skeletal biology and documentary evidence in 19th-20th century Portugal.

BACKGROUND: The inference of the state of wealth or poverty from human skeletal remains is a difficult task, as the limited number of skeletal changes are mediated by numerous other physiological, biomechanical and pathological events. In recent years, identified skeletal collections have become valuable resources in enabling aetiologies of these changes to be understood while controlling for some known causative factors, e.g. age, sex and occupation. This has favoured more rigorous data analysis and interpretation. AIM: This study compares the presence of osteological makers of occupation -

Economic and living statuses of community-dwelling older adults and the related factors.

AIM: The health and well-being of older adults are closely related to their economic and living statuses. Socioeconomic inequality has a substantial impact on the healthcare received by these older adults. The present study aimed to understand the current economic and living statuses of community older adults, and examine the relationships among their demographics, economic status and living status. METHODS: This study used a cross-sectional correlational design. Stratified random sampling was applied to recruit 384 community-dwelling older adults. A face-to-face structured questionnaire was

Economic collapse under epidemic-induced lockdowns and its prediction: A coupled dynamics approach.

The sudden outbreak of an epidemic poses a significant challenge to alleviating global poverty. To suppress the epidemic, governments impose restrictions on social and economic activities. While most studies discuss the indirect impact of social restrictions on disease and the economy, the effects of economic restrictions-such as workplace and business closures, workforce capacity limits, international trade and travel restrictions, and supply chain disruptions (collectively called economic lockdown)-exert a harsh impact on the economy, which remains largely overlooked. This study addresses th
