Replacement of L-valine with D-valine in a standard culture medium can selectively inhibit fibroblast proliferation. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether human myometrial cells cultured with D-valine instead of L-valine can survive and express their characteristics. The measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) using X-rays is usually employed to monitor the mineral content in a given portion of bone. However, this method cannot differentiate between changes in bone volume or in degree of mineralization of the bone matrix. This report includes details of the clinical and pathologic features of 31 dogs with a range of systemic illness and granulomatous lymphadenopathy associated with the presence of birefringent crystalline material within lymph nodes. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis was used to determine whether experimental acrylamide (ACR) neuropathy involves deregulation of subcellular elements (Na, P, S, Cl, K, Ca and Mg) and water in Schwann cells and small, medium and large diameter myelinated axons of rat sciatic nerve. Electron microscopic and X-ray microanalytic studies were performed on four cases of argyria; one generalized and three localized. Deposition of electron dense granules was predominantly found on elastic fibers and around basal laminas of secretory portions of eccrine glands, although the amount of deposition was much less in the case of generalized argyria. In all four cases, X-ray microanalysis revealed that the depositions consisted mainly of silver, selenium, and sulfur. The importance of selenium in the detoxification of heavy metals was discussed.

A common tattoo occurring in the mouth is caused by the insertion of amalgam filling material into the soft tissues. Fifteen amalgam tattoos were examined. Amalgam or its derivatives were found within macrophages, fibroblasts and multinuclear giant cells. Fine particles were found associated with: the basement-membranes of mucosal epithelium, of striped muscle fibres, and of muscle cells of blood vessels; collagen; elastic tissue; and the connective tissue of nerves. Using trimethyl phosphate and calcium nitrate tetrahydrate as the calcium and phosphorus precursors, respectively, HA films were prepared layer by layer by a sol-gel method. The phase constitution, microstructure and calcium/phosphorus (Ca/P) molar ratio of the sol-gel films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electronic probe microanalysis (EPMA). We have used published rat micropuncture data to construct a matrix of ion concentrations along the rat nephron. With an iterative computer model of known ion interactions, we calculated relative supersaturation ratios in all nephron segments. The collecting ducts and urine showed expected supersaturation with stone-forming salts. X-ray microanalysis was used to study the elemental composition of the rat parathyroid gland. Analyses were performed in morphologically defined cells. Use of semi-thin cryosections allowed us to selectively analyze cell nucleus, cytoplasm and occasionally dense granules in the cytoplasm. The concentration of elements (mmol/kg dry weight) in chief cells of parathyroid gland were as follows: Na 83, Mg 48, P 853, S 224, Cl 164, K 551 and Ca 10. We report a patient who developed corneal argyrosis secondary to occupational silver soldering. Clinically, the cornea was notable for a green-brown discoloration localized to Descemet's membrane by slit-lamp biomicroscopy. Silver particles were identified within the anterior three eighths of Descemet's membrane by light and electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis. To our knowledge, the association between corneal argyrosis and silver soldering has not been previously reported.
