Congenital anomalies in the offspring of nurses: association with area of employment during pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether registered nurses in specific areas of employment during pregnancy had a higher risk for congenital anomalies in their offspring. An offspring cohort (n = 22,611) was created through linkage of the British Columbia Vital Statistics Agency live and stillbirth records from 1986 to 2000, to a female cohort database of registered nurses. Of these, 16,005 (70.8%) were registered in a specific area of employment when pregnant. Odds ratios were calculated using generalized estimating equations (GEE), binary logistic regression with adjustment for sex

AIMS: To investigate the factors, including size of organisation, associated with job loss in patients awaiting surgery to the hip or knee joint. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to 498 consecutive patients of working age listed at a district general hospital for major joint replacement, knee arthroscopy, or periacetabular osteotomy. Questions were asked about level of physical disability, duration of symptoms, employment circumstances at the time the joint problem began, and job changes since the onset of symptoms with their reasons. Analysis focused on those in work when their health pro

Beyond transition: a comparison of the employment experiences of American and Canadian adults with LD.

With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the United States and the Canadian Chartre of Rights and Freedoms, there is a new work environment for individuals with learning disabilities (LD) in North America. This qualitative study sought to compare the employment experiences of 25 U.S. adults with LD and 24 Canadian adults with LD. Areas of comparison were job getting, experiences on the job, and job advancement. Remarkably, the U.S. and Canadian adults with LD had nearly the same employment experiences. In essence, each set of data mirrored the other despite marked differences

Consumer participation in the employment rehabilitation process: contextual factors and implications for practice.

Rehabilitation models of practice have emerged that offer persons' with disabilities opportunities to have an active role in the work entry or re(entry) process. Despite the growth and interest in empowering client involvement in practice, consumer views on the determinants of participation are not fully understood. Thus, consumer feedback on using a self-directed approach to employment rehabilitation was elicited to identify factors integral to their participation in the process. Focus groups were conducted with 35 adult consumers with developmental, mental health, physical and learning disab

Employment as butcher and cancer risk in a record-linkage study from Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of cancer among butchers and other meat workers in a large record-linkage study from Sweden. METHODS: The Swedish Cancer Environment Register III contains nationwide data on cancer incidence during 1971-1989 for all residents, by occupation and industry of employment as reported at the 1960 and 1970 censuses. We identified 25,049 men classified as butchers or meat workers at either census. We used as a comparison group the remaining part of the active male population, after exclusion of workers with direct contact with animals. RESULTS: Butchers in the meat

Supported employment for persons with severe and profound mental retardation: a critical analysis.

An analysis of the employment outcomes of 109 persons with severe profound mental retardation was undertaken. The mean age of the group was 28 years and mean intelligence quotient (Stanford-Binet) was 30. The data were drawn from over 90 local community programmes in the United States. Results indicated that all persons were in supervised residential situations and that 93% of the total were competitively employed with the mean wage being $3.63 per hour. Mean hours of weekly employment were 22 hours. After 12 months of placement, 81.5% of the clients were still employed. Supported employment h

Factors affecting employability among young adults with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

A sample of 98 young adults with spina bifida were interviewed. None had severe learning difficulties. All were resident in S. Wales or the West of England. Only a third were in open competitive employment, mainly of a clerical nature. Their incomes fell well below average British earnings. Comparing those in work with the unemployed showed they differed significantly according to intelligence, academic qualifications, continence, behaviour, overall disability score and place of residence. The non-discriminating factors are listed and the implications of the findings discussed.

Exploring the impact of aphasia severity on employment, social participation, and quality of life.

Aphasia impairs communication and is associated with reduced employment, limited social participation, and lower quality of life. However, the relationship between aphasia severity and these outcomes remains underexplored, especially regarding employment. This cross-sectional study examined employment status, social participation, and quality of life in 136 individuals with chronic aphasia following cerebrovascular disease. Multiple logistic and linear regression models were used to evaluate the influence of aphasia severity, non-linguistic cognitive function, apathy, mobility, and social envi

Employment insecurity and binge drinking in the United States: Implications of unemployment insurance.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether employment transitions are associated with within-person variation in binge drinking and whether unemployment insurance may buffer this risk. METHODS: Using 19 waves of data from the Understanding America Study (May 2020-March 2021; N = 1710) in the United States, mixed-effects models examined within-person associations between employment transitions and binge drinking days. Postestimation contrasts evaluated restorative changes associated with upward employment transitions. RESULTS: Shifts from secure employment to underemployment (β = 0.033, p

Fibromyalgia, gender, and employment: unveiling an overlooked reality in occupational health in Chile.

Fibromyalgia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction that primarily affects women of working age. Because it lacks biological markers and its diagnosis is largely based on clinical criteria, fibromyalgia has been subject to gender biases that tend to minimize its symptoms and question the legitimacy of the condition. This delegitimization affects the employment trajectories of women with fibromyalgia, who experience higher rates of unemployment, withdrawal from employment, and discrimination. Studies indicate that only a minorit

Employment status and self-rated health in people with multiple sclerosis in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: In Sweden, many people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) remain employed due to flexible work and social insurance support. However, as MS progresses, work income declines while reliance on sickness absence (SA) and disability pension (DP) increases. Self-rated health, a holistic measure of physical and mental well-being, is informative in the work context. This study aims to explore factors associated with combined categorical indicators that integrate employment status and self-rated health and examines factors associated with different employment-health states. METHODS: This popu

Patients with viral liver disease may fear discrimination or social prejudice. This study aimed to clarify the employment status of patients with liver disease in Japan and provide basic data to promote support for balancing treatment and work responsibilities. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey on employment was
