Deficient sustained attention to response task and P300 characteristics in early Huntington's disease.

Evidence for the extent and nature of attentional impairment in premanifest and manifest Huntington's disease (HD) is inconsistent. Understanding such impairments may help to better understand early functional changes in HD and could have consequences concerning care for HD patients. We investigated attentional control in both early and premanifest HD. We studied 17 early HD subjects (mean age: 51 years), 12 premanifest HD subjects (mean age: 43 years), and 15 healthy controls (mean age: 51 years), using the sustained attention to response task (SART), a simple Go/No-go test reflecting attenti

Independent coding of reward magnitude and valence in the human brain.

Previous research has shown that two components of the event-related brain potential, the P300 and feedback negativity, are sensitive to information about rewards and penalties. The present study investigated the properties of these components in a simple gambling game that required participants to choose between cards that were unpredictably associated with monetary gains and losses of variable magnitude. The aim was to determine the sensitivity of each component to two critical features of reward stimuli: magnitude (small or large) and valence (win or loss). A double dissociation was observe

Difference in P300 latency in two types of leukoaraiosis.

P300 examination was performed in patients with periventricular leukoaraiosis and in patients with leukoaraiosis in the centrum semiovale. Ten patients with periventricular leukoaraiosis, ten patients with leukoaraiosis in centrum semiovale and ten age-matched controls without leukoaraiosis were studied. The P300 was measured with an evoked potential recorder using an oddball paradigm. The mini-mental state examination score was significantly lower and the P300 latency was significantly longer in the leukoaraiosis in the centrum semiovale group than in the periventricular leukoaraiosis group a

Do changes in cerebral blood flow modulate the amplitudes of P300 during cognitive task?

A single session of aerobic or resistance training transiently enhances cognitive function, making it a valuable strategy for dementia prevention in the older people. Despite its acknowledged benefits, the precise mechanism behind exercise-induced cognitive improvement remains controversial. In the present study, we investigated the impact of altered cerebral blood flow (CBF) on brain neural activity originating from motor executive and inhibitory processing using electroencephalographic event-related potentials (EEG-ERPs). Sixteen healthy subjects participated in four sessions, with EEG-ERPs

P300 alterations in schizophrenic patients experiencing auditory hallucinations.

RATIONALE: Attentional deficits have been implicated in the pathophysiology of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. Since the latency of the P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs) is considered to be a sensitive measure of stimulus classification speed, while its amplitude-a measure of attentional resource allocation when memory updating is engaged, the present study focuses on the comparison of P300 between healthy subjects and schizophrenic patients experiencing auditory hallucinations and treated with clozapine and olanzapine. METHODS: The auditory P300 was assessed during

The specificity of the auditory P300 responses and its association with clinical outcomes in youth with psychosis risk syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia often occurs in youth, and psychosis risk syndrome (PRS) occurs before the onset of psychosis. Assessing the neuropsychological abnormalities of PRS individuals can help in early identification and active intervention of mental illness. Auditory P300 amplitude defect is an important manifestation of attention processing abnormality in PRS, but it is still unclear whether there are abnormalities in the attention processing of rhythmic compound tone stimuli in PRS individuals, and whether the P300 amplitude induced by these stimuli is specific to PRS individuals and rel

Event-related potentials in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Twenty-three unmedicated patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were compared with 12 unmedicated patients with social phobia (SP) and 18 age-matched normal controls (C) using a two-tone auditory oddball event-related potentials (ERP) paradigm. The OCD group showed significantly shorter P300 latencies and shorter N200 latencies for target stimuli than the SP and the C groups. The OCD patients also tended to have greater N200 negativity compared with normal controls. However, there were no significant relationships between these ERP abnormalities in OCD patients and the type or sever

Bid outcome processing in Vickrey auctions: An ERP study.

Online retailers often sell products using a socially competitive second-price sealed-bid auction known as a Vickrey auction (VA), an incentivized demand-revealing mechanism used to elicit players' subjective values. The VA presents a situation of risky decision-making, which typically implements value processing and a loss aversion mechanism. Neural outcome processing of VA bids are not known; this study explores this for the first time using EEG. Twenty-eight healthy participants bid on household items against an anonymous, computerized opponent. Bid outcome event-related potentials were pre

The efficacy and safety of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation for patients with minimally conscious state: a sham-controlled randomized double-blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has emerged as a potentially effective neuromodulation technique for addressing neurological disorders, including disorders of consciousness. Expanding upon our prior clinical study, which demonstrated the superior effectiveness of a 4-week taVNS treatment in patients with minimally conscious state (MCS) compared to those in a vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness state, the aim of this investigation was to evaluate the safety and therapeutic efficacy of taVNS in individuals with MCS through a sham-controlled randomized d

ERPs in Children and Adolescents with Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Before and after an Intervention Program.

According to DSM 5, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable worry about various topics that occupies the majority of the subject's time for a period of at least six months. The aforementioned state causes distress and/or functional impairments. This paper presents the outcomes of a pilot study that evaluated the implementation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and CBT with an SSRIs intervention program. The participants comprised 16 children and adolescents with GAD (8 males and 8 females) matched with 16 typically developing peers (8 males and 8 fe

Psychophysiology of spider phobia in 8- to 12-year-old girls.

The present investigation focused on late event-related potentials (ERPs) and facial electromyographic (EMG) activity in response to symptom provocation in 8- to 12-year-old spider phobic girls and compared results to those in non-fearful controls. Fourteen patients and 14 controls were presented with phobia-relevant, generally fear-inducing, disgust-inducing and affectively neutral pictures in an EEG/EMG session. ERPs were extracted in the time-windows 340-500ms (P300) and 550-770ms (late positive potential, LPP). Relative to controls, phobics showed enhanced amplitudes of P300 and LPP in res

Speed of processing of the visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological systems in adult dyslexics: the contribution of "asynchrony" to word recognition deficits.

This study investigated whether "asynchrony" in speed of processing (SOP) between the visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological modalities contributes to word recognition deficits among adult dyslexics. Male university students with a history of diagnosed dyslexia were compared to age-matched normal readers on a variety of experimental measures while event-related potentials and reaction time data were collected. Measures were designed to evaluate auditory and visual processing for non-linguistic (tones and shapes) and linguistic (phonemes and graphemes) low-level stimuli as well as higher

Electrophysiological evidence that musical experience affects spatial auditory perception.

Musical experience is associated with enhanced auditory abilities, but it remains unclear how these benefits are expressed across different stages of spatial auditory processing. Therefore, we examined participants with and without musical experience using a spatial auditory oddball paradigm with multiple spatial deviations under both unattended and attended conditions. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials, and phase-locking value (PLV)-based functional connectivity were jointly analyzed to characterize spatial auditory processing at behavioral, local neural, and network levels. Childhood trauma predicts attenuated N170 responses to happy child faces: ERP Evidence of early perceptual gating deficits.

Maternal sensitivity to children's emotional cues is a fundamental determinant of healthy child development, yet childhood trauma can disrupt the neurobiological processes underlying this sensitivity, contributing to the intergenerational transmission of adversity. This study investigated how childhood trauma (CT) and trauma-specific reflective functioning (RF-T) influence the neural processing of children's emotional expressions. Using event-related potentials (ERPs) in a sample of mothers with histories of maltreatment (N = 30), we examined three functionally distinct stages: early structura

Disgust evoked by strong wormwood bitterness influences the processing of visual food cues in women: An ERP study.

The perception of intense bitterness is associated with disgust and food rejection. The present cross-modal event-related potential (ERP) study investigated whether a bitter aftertaste is able to influence affective ratings and the neuronal processing of visual food cues. We presented 39 healthy normal-weight women (mean age: 22.5 years) with images depicting high-caloric meat dishes, high-caloric sweets, and low-caloric vegetables after they had either rinsed their mouth with wormwood tea (bitter group; n = 20) or water (control group; n = 19) for 30s.
