Clinical applications of control systems models: The neural integrators for eye movements.

The first models that were proposed to account for the neural control of eye movements applied a classic control systems approach, including feedback, and measured system responses to sinusoidal and transient stimuli. Although such models provided many insights, their limitations were quickly recognized, such as their inability to account for anticipatory responses. Another question was whether models with lumped transfer functions could usefully represent a population of neurons, in which individual units were shown to encode a spectrum of different signals, including resting discharge rates

Pattern of reading eye movements during monovision contact lens wear in presbyopes.

Monovision can be used as a method to correct presbyopia with contact lenses (CL) but its effect on reading behavior is still poorly understood. In this study eye movements (EM) were recorded in fifteen presbyopic participants, naïve to monovision, whilst they read arrays of words, non-words, and text passages to assess whether monovision affected their reading. Three conditions were compared, using daily disposable CLs: baseline (near correction in both eyes), conventional monovision (distance correction in the dominant eye, near correction in the non-dominant eye), and crossed monovision (th

Eye movements and postural control in dyslexic children performing different visual tasks.

The aim of this study was to examine eye movements and postural control performance among dyslexic children while reading a text and performing the Landolt reading task. Fifteen dyslexic and 15 non-dyslexic children were asked to stand upright while performing two experimental visual tasks: text reading and Landolt reading. In the text reading task, children were asked to silently read a text displayed on a monitor, while in the Landolt reading task, the letters in the text were replaced by closed circles and Landolt rings, and children were asked to scan each circle/ring in a reading-like fas

Binocular Summation for Reflexive Eye Movements: A Potential Diagnostic Tool for Stereodeficiencies.

PURPOSE: Stereoscopic vision, by detecting interocular correlations, enhances depth perception. Stereodeficiencies often emerge during the first months of life, and left untreated can lead to severe loss of visual acuity in one eye and/or strabismus. Early treatment results in much better outcomes, yet diagnostic tests for infants are cumbersome and not widely available. We asked whether reflexive eye movements, which in principle can be recorded even in infants, can be used to identify stereodeficiencies. METHODS: Reflexive ocular following eye movements induced by fast drifting noise stimul

Perceptual bias, more than age, impacts on eye movements during face processing.

Consistent with the right hemispheric dominance for face processing, a left perceptual bias (LPB) is typically demonstrated by younger adults viewing faces and a left eye movement bias has also been revealed. Hemispheric asymmetry is predicted to reduce with age and older adults have demonstrated a weaker LPB, particularly when viewing time is restricted. What is currently unclear is whether age also weakens the left eye movement bias. Additionally, a right perceptual bias (RPB) for facial judgments has less frequently been demonstrated, but whether this is accompanied by a right eye movement

Clinical evaluation of eye movements in spinocerebellar ataxias: a prospective multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Ocular motor abnormalities reflect the varied neuropathology of spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) and may serve to clinically distinguish the different SCAs. We analyzed the various eye movement abnormalities detected prospectively at the baseline visit during a large multicenter natural history study of SCAs 1, 2, 3, and 6. METHODS: The data were prospectively collected from 12 centers in the United States in patients with SCAs 1, 2, 3, and 6, as part of the Clinical Research Consortium for Spinocerebellar Ataxias (NIH-CRC-SCA). Patient characteristics, ataxia rating scales, the Uni

Intense Imagery Movements (IIM): More to motor stereotypies than meets the eye.

AIM: A subgroup of children who present with motor stereotypies in the context of episodes of intense imagery have recently been described in the literature,(1) termed Intense Imagery Movements (IIM). All children report conscious engagement in acts of imagery or imagination, with stereotyped movements occurring simultaneously with limited conscious awareness. This article reports preliminary cognitive data to inform clinical management and guide future research. METHOD: Intellectual functioning was assessed for ten children with IIM (7 boys, 3 girls; mean age = 10;01, age range = 6;06 to 14;

Pursuit ocular movements in multiple sclerosis: a video-based eye-tracking study.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients frequently develop some form of ocular motor dysfunction during the disease. In previous studies, ocular motor abnormalities were found to correlate with clinical disability and with impaired cognitive performance. The objective of this study was to assess the pursuit ocular movement (POM) frequency in relapsing-remitting (RR) and secondary progressive (SP) MS patients by using a vision-based non-intrusive eye tracker. POM frequency was significantly lower (p < 0.001) in MS patients compared to normal controls. No differences between RR and SP-MS patients and n

Auditory inhibition of rapid eye movements and dream recall from REM sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is debate in dream research as to whether ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) waves or cortical arousal during sleep underlie the biological mechanisms of dreaming. This study comprised 2 experiments. As eye movements (EMs) are currently considered the best noninvasive indicator of PGO burst activity in humans, the aim of the first experiment was to investigate the effect of low-intensity repeated auditory stimulation on EMs (and inferred PGO burst activity) during REM sleep. It was predicted that such auditory stimuli during REM sleep would have a suppressive effect on EMs.

Deficits in local and global motion perception arising from abnormal eye movements.

Albino mammals exhibit a range of visual deficits including disrupted hemispheric pathways, an underdeveloped central retina, and nystagmus. Recently, it has been reported that albino animals also show deficits in the processing of visual motion, exhibiting higher motion coherence thresholds (MCTs; the proportion of coherently moving elements within a field of randomly moving distracters required to reliably report direction). Here we compare MCTs-collected from human observers with albinism-with an equivalent noise analysis of their fine-direction discrimination and report that their loss in

Short-latency disparity vergence eye movements: dependence on the preëxisting vergence angle.

We recorded the vergence eye movements that are elicited at ultra-short latencies when binocular disparities are applied to large-field patterns (Busettini, C., Miles, F.A. and Krauzlis, R.J. (1996). J. Neurophysiol., 75: 1392-1410) and determined their dependence on the preëxisting vergence angle (PVA). The search coil technique was used to record the movements of both eyes in four healthy subjects (two with presbyopia). Using dichoptic viewing, the two eyes saw identical images each consisting of a fixation cross at the centre of a random-dot pattern in a circular aperture. The subject fixat

Extra-retinal adaptation of cortical motion-processing areas during pursuit eye movements.

Repetitive eye movement produces a compelling motion aftereffect (MAE). One mechanism thought to contribute to the illusory movement is an extra-retinal motion signal generated after adaptation. However, extra-retinal signals are also generated during pursuit. They modulate activity within cortical motion-processing area MST, helping transform retinal motion into motion in the world during an eye movement. Given the evidence that MST plays a key role in generating MAE, it may also become indirectly adapted by prolonged pursuit. To differentiate between these two extra-retinal mechanisms we exa

Head-body righting reflex from the supine position and preparatory eye movements.

CONCLUSION: Saccular and utricular maculae can provide information on the supine static position, considering that both have pronounced curved structures with hair cells having a variety of polarization vectors that enable them to sense an inverted position and thus direct the righting reflex. OBJECTIVE: The vestibular system is essential for the structuring of motor behaviour, senses linear and angular acceleration and has a strong influence on posture and balance at rest, during locomotion and in head body righting reflexes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using guinea pigs in the supine position wi

Commentary: smooth pursuit eye movements: from low-level to high-level vision.

If an object of great interest moves in our environment, we are able to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that keep the image of the moving object stationary on our fovea. The processing of visual motion underlying the execution of smooth pursuit eye movements is very similar to the processing underlying the perception of visual motion. During initiation of smooth pursuit, an averaging across all available motion information occurs. Cognitive factors including attention, prediction and learning are able to influence the execution of smooth pursuit. The pursuit target trajectory in space is r

The eye movements of pure alexic patients during reading and nonreading tasks.

We compared the eye-movements of two patients who read letter-by-letter (LBL) following a left occipital lobe lesion with those of normal control subjects and of hemianopic patients in two tasks: a nonreading visual search task and a text reading task. Whereas the LBL readers exhibited similar eye-movement patterns to those of the other two groups on the nonreading task, their eye movements differed significantly during reading, as reflected in the disproportionate increase in the number and duration of fixations per word and in the regressive saccades per word. Importantly, relative to the tw

Functional anatomy of pursuit eye movements in humans as revealed by fMRI.

We have investigated the functional anatomy of pursuit eye movements in humans with functional magnetic imaging. The performance of pursuit eye movements induced activations in the cortical eye fields also activated during the execution of visually guided saccadic eye movements, namely in the precentral cortex [frontal eye field (FEF)], the medial superior frontal cortex (supplementary eye field), the intraparietal cortex (parietal eye field), and the precuneus, and at the junction of occipital and temporal cortex (MT/MST) cortex.
