Dealing with the fear of mutilation in the donation discussion.

Fear of mutilation is a significant barrier to organ and tissue donation. It constitutes an example of Mystical Thinking and may be seen as an exemplar of animal learning or, more specifically, as a representation of the "blood phobia." As such the fear is not amenable to conventional public education efforts. Cognitive and behavioral techniques used in treating other types of phobias should be studied as a way to remove this barrier to donation.

The overprediction of fear and panic in panic disorder.

The present study examined changes in the prediction of fear and panic in a clinical sample of patients (N = 25) meeting DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA). Data were collected for approx. 2000 trials of in vivo exposure. As expected, PDA patients displayed a bias for overpredicting both the level of fear and the likelihood of panic during an exposure trial. This overprediction bias was evidenced across several domains including heights, transportation and social situations. Although patients learned to make more accurate predictions within an exposure session, the le

Overprediction of fear in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The overprediction of fear model is discussed in relation to the development and maintenance of panic disorder with agoraphobia. Data are presented which demonstrate a significant relationship between self-reports of phobic avoidance and anticipation of panic, both before and after treatment, and the occurrence of panic. Implications of the overprediction model for exposure-based therapy are also discussed along with its limitations and some directions for future research.

Stress-Enhanced Fear Learning (SEFL) is Associated with Enhanced Reactivation of Fear Engrams in Caudal but not Rostral Dentate Gyrus.

Traumatic stress can cause long-lasting changes in cognition and affect, sometimes leading to diagnoses such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) model recapitulates understudied components of PTSD, such as stress-induced sensitization of fear learning. The SEFL procedure entails exposing mice to footshock stress followed later by fear conditioning in a different context. When tested later for recall of fear conditioning, previously stressed mice exhibit enhanced freezing compared to non-stressed controls. Studies have shown that dorsal and ventral

The relationship of fear of pain, pain anxiety, and fear-avoidance beliefs with perceived stress in surgical patients with postoperative kinesiophobia.

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia is one of the most prevalent postoperative problems with negative effects on patient mobility. Fear of pain (FOP), pain anxiety (PA), and fear of avoidance beliefs (FABs) are influential factors on postoperative mobility and may be affected by perceived stress (PS). The present study examined whether perceived stress serves to mediate the relationship between fear of pain, pain anxiety, and fear of avoidance beliefs with kinesiophobia (fear of movement) in postoperative patients. METHODS: The study was conducted in the neurosurgery, general surgery, and orthopedic wa

Influence of footshock number and intensity on the behavioral and endocrine response to fear conditioning and cognitive fear generalization in male rats.

Foot-shock paradigms have provided valuable insights into the neurobiology of stress and fear conditioning. An extensive body of literature indicates that shock exposure can elicit both conditioned and unconditioned effects, although delineating between the two is a challenging task. This distinction holds crucial implications not only for the theoretical interpretation of fear conditioning, but also for properly evaluating putative preclinical models of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involving shock exposure. The characteristics of shocks (intensity and number) affect the strength of l

Behavioral avoidance tasks for eliciting disgust and anxiety in contamination fear: An examination of a test for a combined disgust and fear reaction.

While research supports the role of disgust in contamination OCD, there is also an overlap with fear in motivating avoidance. The "heebie-jeebies" is an emotional response associated with fear and disgust that motivates avoidance of contact with skin-transmitted pathogens (e.g., parasites). This motivation aligns with characteristics of contamination OCD. From a screening of undergraduate students (N = 188), contamination fearful (n = 14), high trait-anxious (n = 14), and low trait-anxious (n = 18) groups were created. Participants engaged in disgust, fear, and "heebie-jeebies" behavioral avoi

Fear of Fear and Broad Dimensions of Psychopathology over the Course of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of fear of fear and broad dimensions of psychopathology in panic disorder with agoraphobia over the course of cognitive behavioural therapy in Japan. METHODS: A total of 177 Japanese patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia were treated with group cognitive behavioural therapy between 2001 and 2015. We examined associations between the change scores in Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire or Body Sensations Questionnaire and the changes in subscales of Symptom Checklist-90 Revised during cognitive behavioural therapy controlling the change in panic

"Blindsight" and subjective awareness of fearful faces: Inversion reverses the deficits in fear perception associated with core psychopathic traits.

Though emotional faces preferentially reach awareness, the present study utilised both objective and subjective indices of awareness to determine whether they enhance subjective awareness and "blindsight". Under continuous flash suppression, participants localised a disgusted, fearful or neutral face (objective index), and rated their confidence (subjective index). Psychopathic traits were also measured to investigate their influence on emotion perception. As predicted, fear increased localisation accuracy, subjective awareness and "blindsight" of upright faces. Coldhearted traits were inverse

The psychology of fear of flying (part I): a critical evaluation of current perspectives on the nature, prevalence and etiology of fear of flying.

Fear of flying, its nature, prevalence, etiology and treatment, has been the subject of a substantial quantity of research over the past 30 years. With the exception of a dated review of treatment methods however, there has been no evaluation of this expanding body of evidence, its contribution to theory and influence on clinical practice. Published research has also generally failed to apply developments in the understanding and treatment of anxiety disorders generally to fear of flying. This review provides a critical evaluation of the existing literature and what it reveals about theory and

Assessing fear in patients with cervical pain: development and validation of the Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale-Cervical (PFActS-C).

The fear avoidance model (FAM) postulates that fear of pain or reinjury is a risk factor for persistent pain and disability, because it leads to the avoidance of physical activity. Research on the FAM has not yielded consistent results, which may be attributed to the model itself, but could also be a product of the way fear of movement is assessed. Studies of the FAM have measured fear using verbal scales consisting of items that are often vague and have only an indirect relationship with fear. This study reports on the development of a Pictorial Fear of Activity Scale-Cervical (PFActS-C). The

A Cortical Stress Signature of Fear-Induced Walking: Mobile Electroencephalography Theta Suppression in Older Women With Fear of Falling.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling is one of the most common and disabling stress responses of later life, yet how it is expressed in the brain during real walking is poorly understood. We examined whether walking under a naturalistic psychological threat, a fear-of-falling stressor, changes cortical oscillatory activity in older women, using mobile electroencephalography. METHODS: In this within-subject study, 30 community-dwelling women aged 65 years or older underwent three-dimensional gait analysis with concurrent 14-channel electroencephalography (128 Hz) during habitual walking and after intro

[The effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on fear memory and spleen inflammatory response in fear-conditioned mice].

Objective: To investigate the effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) on fear memory and its regulatory role in splenic inflammatory responses in fear-conditioned mice. Methods: Twenty-four 12-week-old healthy, male C57BL/6J mice were randomized into two groups using a random number table: taVNS (n=12) and control (n=12). Both groups underwent conditioned fear modeling using a fear conditioning chamber. The taVNS group received daily taVNS stimulation (dense-disperse wave, 2 Hz/15 Hz, intensity 2 mA, 30 min) for 6 consecutive days, while the control group received sh

Microglial activation in the medial prefrontal cortex after remote fear recall participates in the regulation of auditory fear extinction.

Excessive or inappropriate fear responses can lead to anxiety-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Studies have shown that microglial activation occurs after fear conditioning and that microglial inhibition impacts fear memory. However, the role of microglia in fear memory recall remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the activated profiles of microglia after the recall of remote-cued fear memory and the role of activated microglia in the extinction of remote-cued fear in adult male C57BL/6 mice. The results revealed that the expression of the microglia ma
