[ARFID: food restriction without fear of weight gain].

Avoidant/restrictive food avoidance disorder, or ARFID, is characterized by restrictive eating or avoidance of food in the absence of the cognitive restraint and weight phobia typically seen in anorexia nervosa. It is often based on a general disinterest in eating, selective eating due to sensory preferences, and/or fear of adverse consequences such as choking, although the diagnostic criteria allow for a number of other clinical presentations. Patients with ARFID tend to be younger, more often male, and have a longer duration of illness compared to patients with other eating disorders. Delimi

A Scoping Review to Identify Interventions That Support Healthier Food Choices for Pupils in Specialist Schools.

Background/Objectives: Children and young people (CYP) with a learning disability are at higher risk of living with overweight and obesity and may consume fewer fruits and vegetables compared to the general paediatric population. They are more likely to experience eating and drinking difficulties, restrictive eating, and mealtime behavioural challenges. The school environment is considered an ideal setting to improve CYP's dietary intakes. The primary objective was to identify existing interventions to support healthier food choices for CYP attending specialist schools. Secondary objectives co

Evaluating the Viability of Virtual Reality for Children's Food Choice Research: Comparative Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) systems offer promising potential as a controlled platform to investigate human behaviors specifically related to food choices. Yet, little is known about its viability for conducting food choice studies with children, thus limiting the development of public health research. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the viability of VR technology for understanding children's food choices, focusing specifically on perceptual differences between VR and real-life (RL) settings. We examined how children perceive and interact with food portion sizes and container

Visual attention to food cues and dental caries-Are they associated?

BACKGROUND: The role of diet has a key role in dental caries. Attention to food cues can be an indicator for food choices. AIM: This study investigates children's visual attention to images with healthy and unhealthy food cues and correlates it with that of their parents and with their dental caries status using eye-tracking technology. DESIGN: A total of 30 children with and without dental caries and their 30 parents were calibrated to the eye-tracking device (Tobii Nano Pro) to ensure standardisation. Participants viewed matching images of healthy and unhealthy food cues, whereas an eye-tr

Understanding the Meat-Masculinity Link: Traditional and Non-Traditional Masculine Norms Predicting Men's Meat Consumption.

Conformity to masculinity ideology predicts men's meat consumption and willingness to reduce their meat intake, but it is unknown which specific masculine norms account for these relationships. This study investigated which traditional and non-traditional masculine norms predict meat consumption, red and processed meat consumption, and willingness to reduce meat consumption in 557 Australian and English males. Men who support the use of physical violence and place high importance on sex ate more meat. Willingness to reduce was highest among men with gender egalitarian views. Targeting these sp

Increase in the frequency of scurvy in children with food selectivity: A case series.

Scurvy is a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Although rare, in recent years, the number of scurvy cases in children with eating disorders has increased. Its manifestations are varied because vitamin C is a cofactor in numerous processes, such as collagen synthesis. The typical skin manifestations include petechiae, bruising, and hyperkeratosis. Mucosal involvement manifests as gingivitis with hypertrophy, bleeding, and loss of teeth. The diagnosis is based on clinical findings and may be confirmed by measuring plasma vitamin C levels. The objective of this study was to describe a cohort

Change in food choice during acute treatment and the effect on longer-term outcome in patients with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of food intake is a central pathological feature of anorexia nervosa (AN). Maladaptive eating behavior and, specifically, limited intake of calorie-dense foods are resistant to change and contribute to poor long-term outcomes. This study is a preliminary examination of whether change in food choices during inpatient treatment is related to longer-term clinical course. METHODS: Individuals with AN completed a computerized Food Choice Task at the beginning and end of inpatient treatment to determine changes in high-fat and self-controlled food choices. Linear regression

Research Progress on the Role and Mechanism of GDF15 in Body Weight Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF15) is a member of the growth differentiation factor subfamily in the transforming growth factor beta superfamily. GDF15 has multiple functions and can regulate biological processes. High levels of GDF15 in the circulation can affect metabolic processes. Studies have shown that GDF15 is associated with changes in body weight. SUMMARY: This review reviews the current knowledge on the relationship between GDF15 and body weight change, focusing on the role and mechanism of GDF15 in body weight regulation. GDF15 plays an important role in reducing

Eye fluke infection changes diet composition in juvenile European perch (Perca fluviatilis).

Intraspecific diet specialization, usually driven by resource availability, competition and predation, is common in natural populations. However, the role of parasites on diet specialization of their hosts has rarely been studied. Eye flukes can impair vision ability of their hosts and have been associated with alterations of fish feeding behavior. Here it was assessed whether European perch (Perca fluviatilis) alter their diet composition as a consequence of infection with eye flukes. Young-of-the-year (YOY) perch from temperate Lake Müggelsee (Berlin, Germany) were sampled in two years, eye

Neural mechanisms supporting maladaptive food choices in anorexia nervosa.

People routinely make poor choices, despite knowledge of negative consequences. The authors found that individuals with anorexia nervosa, who make maladaptive food choices to the point of starvation, engaged the dorsal striatum more than healthy controls when making choices about what to eat, and that activity in fronto-striatal circuits was correlated with their actual food consumption in a meal the next day.

Rumen distension and contraction influence feed preference by sheep.

Distension of the rumen limits feed intake by livestock. Ruminal dysfunctions due to bloat, which causes distension by accumulation of excessive gas within the rumen, also reduce feeding. We hypothesized that excessive levels of rumen distension cause feed aversions and that preference increases for feeds eaten in association with recovery from bloat. To test these hypotheses, we determined whether 12 commercial crossbred lambs (average initial BW of 43 +/- 2 kg) could associate ingestion of specific feeds with the consequences of increased intraruminal pressure and its subsidence. Six of the

Characteristics of school children who are choosy eaters.

Choosiness, manifested in refusal of foods, eating little, and disinterest in food, was studied with regard to prevalence, stability, sociodemographic characteristics, health problems, weight, and associated problem behaviors in a sample of 240 Swedish primary school children. Questionnaires were used, and data on sociodemographic variables, health problems, weight, and height were collected from child health-care and school health records. Choosiness was present in one third of the children, but only 8% showed choosy behavior both at home and in school. The choosy children had no more health

Elevated sweet taste pleasantness ratings in bulimia nervosa.

Recent studies suggest that some patients with bulimia nervosa may experience elevated pleasantness responses to sweet taste. This study explored possible associations between symptoms patterns and pleasantness ratings for sucrose solutions in bulimic patients. Subjects included 15 women meeting DSM III-R criteria for narrowly defined bulimia nervosa (no history of other eating disorder); five patients with current bulimia nervosa and a past history of anorexia nervosa; and 20 healthy age-matched female controls. Subjects ate a standardized breakfast prior to the morning study visit. Sucrose-w

Taste detection and discrimination performance of rats following selective desalivation.

Taste sensitivity and responsivity, two-tastant and taste-mixture discrimination performance, and taste preferences were examined prior to and after the selective desalivation of 48 male Long-Evans rats. Altered preference behavior was observed in rats after removal of the major salivary glands, as well as after removal of only the submandibular-sublingual complexes. In 9 of 12 desalivated rats, decreased sensitivity and increased responsivity to near-threshold sodium chloride solutions were observed, although these changes were less than one-half an order of magnitude. No between-group differ

Selective Devaluation Affects the Processing of Preferred Rewards.

The present study investigated whether the representation of subjective preferences in the event-related potential is manipulable through selective devaluation, i.e., the consumption of a specific food item until satiety. Thirty-four participants completed a gambling task in which they chose between virtual doors to find one of three snack items, representing a high, medium, or low preference outcome as defined by individual desire-to-eat ratings. In one of two test sessions, they underwent selective devaluation of the high preference outcome. In the other, they completed the task on an empty

Self-restraint spillover: Inhibitory control disrupts appetite regulation among ruminators.

OBJECTIVE: People can use inhibitory control to temporarily inhibit their personal preferences to achieve their long-term goals. According to the ego fixation model (Koole et al., 2014), ruminators have difficulties relaxing inhibitory control, leading them to continue inhibiting their personal needs, even when this is no longer required by the situation. Inhibitory control may thus disrupt healthy appetite regulation among ruminators. METHOD: Among 324 Dutch undergraduate students (218 women; Mage  = 21.5), different inhibitory control states were manipulated by varying whether or not partic

Attitudes toward health and taste of food among women with bulimia nervosa and women of a non-clinical sample.

Taste preferences and health concerns play important roles in determining eating attitudes, thus influencing food choices. Disordered eating attitudes are common among women, and can lead to the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). Attitudes toward health and taste of food among ED patients and its comparison with non-clinical women are not well known, and this knowledge could improve eating interventions. In this study, we compared taste preferences and health concerns in 27 women with diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (BN) and 216 women of a non-clinical sample. All participants
