A 50-year-old male was admitted to us presenting a bulging of 5 X 6 cm in size on the forehead. His general condition was excellent and neurological status was normal. The mass in the forehead was soft and showed a fluctuation. On the plain skull films, a lobulated bone defect of 5 X 4 cm in size was noticed in the frontal bone and the frontal sinus completely disappeared. Carotid angiograms revealed posterior displacement of the supraclinoid portion of the internal carotid arteries and the proximal part of the anterior cerebral arteries, and elevation and posterior displacement of both fronto

The patterns of midface fractures were related to postoperative computed tomography scans and clinical results to assess the value of ordering fracture assembly in success of treatment methods. A total of 550 midface fractures were studied for their midface components and the presence of fractures in the adjacent frontal bone or mandible. Preoperative and postoperative computed tomography scans were analyzed to generate recommendations regarding exposure and postoperative stability related to fracture pattern and treatment sequence, both within the midface alone and when combined with frontal

We report our experience with 14 consecutive cases of frontal basilar trauma occurring in children and adolescents aged 18 months to 18 years (mean 9.5 years). Brain parenchymal injury resulting in functional deficit occurred in 5 patients (36 percent), 2 patients suffered bilateral blindness, and 1 suffered unilateral loss of vision. A classification system and treatment algorithm based on the clinical fracture pattern seen by computed tomography are introduced. Type I, central, is confined to the upper nasoethmoidal complex, central frontal bone, and medial third of the superior orbital rims

Bony defects of the face continue to challenge the reconstructive surgeon. Traditional sources of autologous bone from the rib or pelvis have been associated with the limitations of pain at the donor site, the need for a second operative field, variable "take" of the graft with poor eventual survival and, ultimately, less than optimal reconstruction. Calvarial bone grafting provides a readily accessible source of bone from an inconspicuous donor site, usually within the same operative field. The morbidity is minimal. The calvarial bone graft is especially useful in repair of the frontal sinus,

Bone involvement in cysticercosis is a rare occurrence. A case of cysticercosis of the frontal orbital bone in a thirty-year-old female is reported. The diagnosis was established by computerized tomographic scanning of the orbit and histopathological examination of the cyst, surgically removed from the cavity in the orbital plate of the frontal bone. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of cysticercosis of the bony orbit.

There are various flaps for bifrontal exposure of the anterior fossa classically described in the neurosurgical literature. This article describes a bifrontal split osteoplastic flap that is characterized by removal of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus without the placement of burr holes on the external surface of the frontal bone. The procedure is safe and rapid, gives the same exposure as other techniques, and allows a superior cosmetic result.

The frontal bone is an integral part of viscero-cranium. It forms the roof of the orbit and its lateral projection namely the zygomatic process of frontal bone forms part of the lateral wall of the orbit. There is a paucity of literature describing foramen in the zygomatic process of frontal bone. Hence the study was conducted. The aim of the study is to expound the incidence and location along with the clinical implications of the foramen on the zygomatic process of frontal bone designated as latero-orbital foramen. The study was conducted using 80 skulls (160 sides) of unknown age and sex. T

General considerations about frontal sinus development are first discussed. We include retrospective clinical and radiographical studies dealing with 90 craniosynostoses among 850 patients operated in the Craniofacial Unit of Necker's Hospital for Sick Children (1976-1988; Paris, France). The incidence of frontal sinus development is analyzed: The pneumatization of the frontal bone seemed to develop according to the type of surgery and to the age at which review was realized, but was not linked to the age at which surgery was performed. The surgery consisted of fronto-orbital remodeling after

We sought to determine the extent of the frontal sinus by intraoperative transillumination through the superomedial orbital wall in a subcranial approach to the anterior skull base. After raising a bicoronal flap, the frontal sinus was transilluminated through the superomedial orbital wall with a fiber-optic light source, delineating the extent of the frontal sinus. The frontal sinus boundary was marked with a marker pen. A frontal sinus anterior wall osteotomy was performed with a sagittal saw, staying within the confines of the frontal sinus marking. A bone flap was removed, and the posterio

The aim of this study is to describe the morphology of frontal recess area with its anatomical variations and to reveal if frontal recess morphology and the anatomical variations related to that region have effects on the pneumatization of the frontal sinuses. The frontal sinus and recess morphometry of 136 sides of 68 dry skulls were evaluated on multislice high-resolution computed tomography. The relationships between frontal sinus and frontal recess measurements were analyzed by correlation and linear regression analysis. The variables between the groups of anatomical variations were analyz

BACKGROUND: Osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, otherwise known as Pott's puffy tumour, is a rare complication of frontal sinusitis. The aim of this paper is to illustrate this condition as a separate entity to other causes of supraorbital swelling and describe the various types of management.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 56-year-old man who was seen in the emergency department with a painful forehead swelling. The maxillofacial surgical team on call arranged for incision and drainage of what was thought to be a sebaceous cyst. Despite oral antibiotic treatment, a continuing dis

A Pott's Puffy Tumour (PPT) is a rare clinical entity, which, traditionally has been described as an acute abscess with periosteitis secondary to osteomyelitis of the external table of the frontal bone of the skull, complicating an acute frontal sinusitis. The aim of this article is to present a case of progressively evolving PPT, which emerged during the course of a common rhinitis, in a patient who, thirty years previously, had undergone a reconstruction of the frontal sinus involving osteosynthesis. The patient was treated with antibiotic therapy coupled with external access surgery using t

PURPOSE: Reliable application of endosseous implants for prosthetic facial reconstruction depends on the bone volume available at the defect site. Regarding the orbit, sufficient bone presentation in the medial superior orbital rim is limited due to the frontal sinus. The aim of this article is to report for the first time on the augmentation of the frontal sinus for gaining bone volume for supraorbital implant placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2007 and 2014, five patients with orbital exenteration were treated by frontal sinus augmentation using autogenous cancellous bone graft from

This paper describes the role of the displacement of bone centers, i.e., the tubers, in the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis. This displacement was studied in 54 patients with isolated or syndromic craniosynostosis in the form of CT scans as well as in two dry neonate skulls with Apert syndrome. For comparison, 49 fetal and 8 normal infant dry skulls were studied. Our investigation was restricted to the coronal and metopic sutures. The results showed a significantly more occipital localization of the frontal bone center and a more frontal localization of the parietal bone center at the side of

Osteoblastoma is a solitary, benign bone tumor that is rarely localized in the frontal sinus. It consists of hypocellular mineralized tissue that may form large masses or irregular trabeculae. A 31 year old man came to our attention with a 7 month history of diplopia, photophobia, frontal headhaches and progressive exophthalmos with proptosis of the left eye. The patient was submitted to computed tomography (CT) which allowed to appraise the extension of the lesion. The mass expanded inside the left frontal sinus and the upper ethmoidal cells invading the left orbital roof. Considering the ext

We report a case of a 17-year-old male who had hit the front of his head in a traffic accident. CT scan revealed contusional hemorrhage and pneumocephalus of the left frontal lobe 10 hours after the accident. A month later he complained of rhinorrhea and CT scan revealed intracerebral pneumocephalus. One day he complained of headache and began to vomit after he sneezed. CT scan revealed that the pneumocephalus had become worse and air had spread throughout the subarachnoid space. Bone CT scan revealed the air communicated from the frontal sinus to the intracerebral air cavity. 3D-CT scan revea
