Mandibular disto-lingual root: a consideration in periodontal therapy.

BACKGROUND: Developmental and morphological abnormalities may contribute to the progression of localized periodontal disease. Although the presence of a disto-lingual root in the mandibular first molar is rare, its role in periodontal destruction has not been examined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of this root contributes to localized periodontal destruction. METHODS: The presence of the disto-lingual root was identified by examination of two periapical radiographs in each of 197 Taiwanese patients with 332 mandibular first molars. Regression analysis was use

A clinical study of an electronic constant force periodontal probe.

Automated probing systems have been developed to provide a more precise method of evaluating periodontal pocket depths and attachment levels. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical performance (reproducibility, time, and comfort) of a new electronic probe (E.P.) compared to the UNC 15 conventional probe (C.P.). Paired measurements 2 hours apart were performed by one examiner on 20 patients with moderate to advanced localized or generalized adult periodontitis. Both the E.P. and C.P. were used on each patient in a random manner. Overall reproducibility (+/- 1.5 mm) was: E.P. 94% (

An in vitro study of oscillating instruments for root planing.

The objective of this in vitro study was to test PER-IO-TOR instruments on the Profin Directional System angle piece (Dentatus-Sweden), using extracted human teeth. In the 1st part of the study, 6 root surfaces were treated with the instruments TOR 1, TOR 2, TOR 3 and TOR 4. For comparison purposes, half the samples treated with each instrument were then subjected to further treatment with a Gracey curette. All samples were then examined by SEM. In the 2nd part of the study, 4 root surfaces were given standardized treatment with each PER-IO-TOR instrument and the amount of substance removed wa

Dental Management of a Child With Mitochondrial DNA Deletion Syndrome (Kearns-Sayre Syndrome): A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a rare mitochondrial DNA deletion disorder characterized by progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary retinopathy, and cardiac conduction abnormalities. Dental management may be complicated by developmental enamel defects, high caries burden, limited cooperation, and anesthetic considerations related to multisystem mitochondrial disease. Published dental case reports focused specifically on pediatric KSS remain extremely sparse. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the staged dental management of a 10-year-old girl with genetically confirmed KSS and

Enhancement of periodontal tissue regeneration by locally controlled delivery of insulin-like growth factor-I from dextran-co-gelatin microspheres.

The present work focused on the design of novel hydrogel microspheres based on both dextran- and gelatin-derived biomaterials, and discussed whether locally controlled delivery of IGF-I from dextran-co-gelatin hydrogel microspheres (DG-MP) was useful for periodontal regeneration enhancement. Microspheres were synthesized when gelatin was cooperating with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) derivatized dextrans (Dex-GMA) and the resultant DG-MP with a hydrogel character of which the cross-linking density could be controlled by the degree of substitution (DS, the number of methacrylates per 100 glucopyr

[Guided tissue regeneration--the beginning of a new era in periodontal surgery].

UNLABELLED: The therapy of deep infrabony defects in periodontal diseases has been a great problem for decades both for dentists and their patients, as well. After application of classic therapy in patients with serious stages of periodontal diseases (subgingival curettage, Modified Widmann flap surgery with and without implantation of implants) a significant strengthening of teeth in alveolus was observed, as well as alleviation of patient's discomfort, and decrease of the depth of periodontal pockets, bleeding, inflammation, etc. However, in spite of the application of this therapy a postope

Clinical efficacy of titanium prepared platelet rich fibrin in periodontal regeneration: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal regeneration therapies frequently involve autologous platelet concentrates (APCs). They can be used in sinus lift surgeries and socket preservation, among other clinical settings. Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) membrane has been used to treat gingival recession in individuals or groups of individuals using a coronally progressed or lateral pedicle flap. In the treatment of mixed periodontic endodontic lesion/furcation defect, PRF functions as a healing and interpositional biomaterial, filling a cystic cavity. PRF is known to help the bone regeneration process. In the last f

Thirty Years of Autologous Platelet Concentrates: From Platelet-Rich Plasma to Platelet-Rich Fibrin.

Nearly three decades have now passed since autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) were introduced into clinical practice. Harnessing the body's innate intrinsic capacity for healing, the concepts of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) emerged to concentrate growth factors and cells at supra-physiological levels. Nearly three decades ago, Professor Robert Marx demonstrated that PRP-obtained via centrifugation of whole blood with anti-coagulants-could accelerate healing across a wide range of indications in both dentistry and medicine. Subsequent research showed that elimi
