Voluntary action influences visual competition.

Converging lines of evidence point to a strong link between action and perception. In this study, we show that this linkage plays a role in controlling the dynamics of binocular rivalry, in which two stimuli compete for perceptual awareness. Observers dichoptically viewed two dynamic rival stimuli while moving a computer mouse with one hand. When the motion of one rival stimulus was consistent with observers' own hand movements, dominance durations of that stimulus were extended and, remarkably, suppression durations of that stimulus were abbreviated. Additional measurements revealed that this

Artistic-Value Descriptions Are Associated with Higher Aesthetic Ratings than Social-Value Descriptions for AI-Generated Variants of Classical Paintings.

Contextual meaning can influence art evaluation even when viewers encounter images within a structured visual stimulus family. This exploratory questionnaire-version study examined whether value-oriented textual descriptions were associated with aesthetic ratings of AI-generated variants of classical paintings in three Chinese-language questionnaire versions emphasising cultural value, artistic value, or social value. The available dataset contained 61 participants, each rating 40 images on a 1-10 aesthetic scale, yielding 2440 complete observations. A post hoc three-rater manipulation check o

Recruitment of motor cortex inhibition differentiates between generalized and focal epilepsy.

Intracortical disinhibitory mechanisms play a crucial role in epilepsy. Therefore, the recruitment of motor cortical excitability was evaluated to distinct between focal and generalized epileptic syndromes. Twenty-five untreated patients with epilepsy and 20 controls were enrolled. Classification into focal (FE, n=10) or idiopathic generalized (IGE, n=15) epilepsy was based on seizure semiology, EEG and MRI. The recruitment of motor cortical inhibition and facilitation was measured by varying the stimulus intensity (SI) of the first conditioning stimulus in a paired-pulse transcranial magnetic

Delayed visual P3 in unilateral thalamic stroke.

The P3 potential is accepted as a neurophysiological correlate of memory and attention. Delayed latencies were reported in different forms of dementias. Although the generator sites are still under debate, the thalamus may play a crucial role. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of an unilateral thalamic ischaemic infarction on P3 generation. The event-related P3 component of six patients (2 male, four female; mean age 47 years, range 22-63 years) with unilateral thalamic ischaemic infarction was studied and compared to age-matched controls (five male, nine female; mean age

EEG Temporal-Spatial Feature Learning for Automated Selection of Stimulus Parameters in Electroconvulsive Therapy.

The risk of adverse effects in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), such as cognitive impairment, can be high if an excessive stimulus is applied to induce the necessary generalized seizure (GS); Conversely, inadequate stimulus results in failure. Recent efforts to automate this task can facilitate statistical analyses on individual parameters or qualitative predictions. However, this automation still significantly lags behind the requirements in clinical practices. This study addresses this issue by predicting the probability of GS induction under the joint restriction of a patient's EEG (electro

Extracellular Electrophysiological Recording of Visually Evoked Swim Pacemaker Signals from the Isolated Rhopalium of Tripedalia cystophora.

The box jellyfish Tripedalia cystophora combines image-forming lens eyes and well-characterized visually guided behaviors with a tractable rhopalial nervous system of approximately 1000 neurons, making it an emerging model for systems-level investigation of visual information processing and sensorimotor integration. Swim pacemaker neurons generate motor commands directly controlling bell contractions, and these signals can be recorded extracellularly from the epidermal stalk nerve of an isolated rhopalium, providing a quantitative proxy for visually driven motor output. The strength of the pac

To gamble or not to gamble: at risk for craving and relapse--learned motivated attention in pathological gambling.

In recent research similarities between pathological gambling and drug addiction have been identified, suggesting excessive gambling to constitute an addiction. So far, we have insufficient knowledge concerning the psychophysiological mechanisms underlying this kind of non-substance-related addiction. The objective of the study was to investigate emotional processing of gambling-relevant and -irrelevant stimuli in pathological gamblers and non-gambling controls using an EEG cue-reactivity paradigm. Whereas gambling-irrelevant stimuli were processed similarly in non-gambling controls (HC) and p

Equine complement activation as a mechanism for equine neutrophil migration in Onchocerca cervicalis infections.

Extracts of Onchocerca cervicalis, an equine parasite, were incubated with radiolabeled equine neutrophils and neutrophil migration was assessed for factors derived from the parasite itself or for host-derived factors after incubation of these same parasite extracts with equine serum. No stimulus for cell migration was observed in saline extracts of adult worms, uterine microfilariae, or skin microfilariae at any dosage tested. However, after incubation of saline extracts with fresh normal equine sera a marked stimulus for neutrophil migration was observed. Ablation of this biologic activity w

Stimulus-induced behavior in F1 hybrids of seizure-sensitive and seizure-resistant gerbils.

We previously established two strains of Mongolian gerbil: a seizure-sensitive strain, established by selective inbreeding for motor seizures elicited by a stimulus called the S method and a seizure-resistant strain that does not exhibit inducible seizures. The behavior of the seizure-sensitive strain is characterized by a progressive increase in responsiveness to weekly application of the S method, from repetitive backward ear movements appearing after postnatal day 40, to a full-blown seizure, while the seizure-resistant strain is apparently unaffected by the stimulation. The difference betw

Judging AI-generated paintings: art-education differences in source classification.

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in generative image models have increased the visual plausibility of AI-generated paintings, raising questions about how viewers attribute image source and whether source-classification performance varies with art-education background. This study examined stimulus-specific patterns of AI/human source classification, differences associated with art education, and participants' self-reported visual judgment cues. METHODS: A total of 356 participants completed a pairwise source-classification task involving six matched pairs of documented human-made paintings and AI

Objective audiometry with DPOAEs : New findings for generation mechanisms and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) are sound waves generated as byproducts of the cochlear amplifier. These are measurable in the auditory canal and represent an objective method for diagnosing functional disorders of the inner ear. Conventional DPOAE and TEOAE methods permit detection of hearing impairment, but with less than desirable accuracy. OBJECTIVE: By accounting for DPOAE generation mechanisms, the aim is to improve the accuracy of inner-ear diagnosis. METHODS: DPOAEs consist of two components, which emer

Effects of stimulus-driven and goal-directed attention on prepulse inhibition of the cortical responses to an auditory pulse.

OBJECTIVE: Inhibition by a prepulse (prepulse inhibition, PPI) of the response to a startling acoustic pulse is modulated by attention. We sought to determine whether goal-directed and stimulus-driven attention differentially modulate (i) PPI of the N100 and P200 components of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) and (ii) the components' generators. METHODS: 128-channel electroencephalograms were recorded in 26 healthy controls performing an active acoustic PPI paradigm. Startling stimuli were presented alone or either 400 or 1000ms after a visual prepulse. Three types of prepulse were used: t

Buses, cars, bicycles and walkers: the influence of the type of human transport on the flight responses of waterbirds.

One way to manage disturbance to waterbirds in natural areas where humans require access is to promote the occurrence of stimuli for which birds tolerate closer approaches, and so cause fewer responses. We conducted 730 experimental approaches to 39 species of waterbird, using five stimulus types (single walker, three walkers, bicycle, car and bus) selected to mimic different human management options available for a controlled access, Ramsar-listed wetland. Across species, where differences existed (56% of 25 cases), motor vehicles always evoked shorter flight-initiation distances (FID) than h

Disruptions to human speed perception induced by motion adaptation and transcranial magnetic stimulation.

To investigate the underlying nature of the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on speed perception, we applied repetitive TMS (rTMS) to human V5/MT+ following adaptation to either fast- (20 deg/s) or slow (4 deg/s)-moving grating stimuli. The adapting stimuli induced changes in the perceived speed of a standard reference stimulus moving at 10 deg/s. In the absence of rTMS, adaptation to the slower stimulus led to an increase in perceived speed of the reference, whilst adaptation to the faster stimulus produced a reduction in perceived speed. These induced changes in speed perce

A spatiotemporal comparison between olfactory and trigeminal event-related potentials.

The present study compared the temporal and spatial aspects of human olfactory and trigeminal processing. A relatively selective trigeminal stimulus, CO2, and a relatively selective olfactory stimulus, H2S, were delivered with an olfactometer to young, healthy volunteers. The analysis was performed in a classical (5-electrode, main ERPs peaks) and modern approach (high topographical resolution, inverse solution, source localization). Results of microstate segmentation highlighted 5 maps that generally described the two processes at cerebral level. The trigeminal response differed from the olfa

Sedation and the stimulus properties of antihistamines.

A group of six rats was trained to discriminate the effects of diphenhydramine (10 mg/kg; 30 min pretreatment time) and saline in a two-lever choice task using a fixed ratio schedule of water reinforcement. Stimulus control was assumed to be present when 80% or more of the first ten responses were appropriate for the treatment condition on each of five consecutive days. Diphenhydramine established stimulus control in each of the subjects. The mean number of sessions prior to the onset of criterion performance was 26 (standard error = 7). A second group of six rats was similarly trained with ch

Human Frequency Following Responses to Filtered Speech.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing interest in using the frequency following response (FFR) to describe the effects of varying different aspects of hearing aid signal processing on brainstem neural representation of speech. To this end, recent studies have examined the effects of filtering on brainstem neural representation of the speech fundamental frequency (f0) in listeners with normal hearing sensitivity by measuring FFRs to low- and high-pass filtered signals. However, the stimuli used in these studies do not reflect the entire range of typical cutoff frequencies used in frequency-specific g

Evidence for a reactionary account of retrieval state initiation.

Engagement of the retrieval state (or mode) is theorized to be a precursor to successful retrieval, but precisely when the retrieval state is engaged is unclear. Our aim in the present study is to determine the time course of retrieval state initiation. Based on growing evidence that the retrieval state reflects internal attention, we hypothesize that the retrieval state is reactionary rather than preparatory, whereby the retrieval state is engaged following-rather than preceding-a stimulus. We collected scalp electroencephalography data during a mnemonic state task in which we explicitly bias

The onset of nonlinear growth of middle-ear responses to high intensity sounds.

The human tympanic membrane (TM) and ossicles are generally considered to act as a linear system as they conduct low and moderate level environmental sounds to the cochlea. At intense stimulus levels (> 120 dB SPL) there is evidence that the TM and ossicles no longer act linearly. The anatomical structures that contribute to the nonlinear responses and their level and frequency dependences are not well defined. We used cadaveric human ears to characterize middle-ear responses to continuous tones between 200 and 20,000 Hz with levels between 60 and 150 dB SPL. The responses of the TM and ossicl

Mix, a program for pseudorandomization.

In psychological experiments involving multiple trials, the order in which individual trials presented to participants influences the results obtained. For this reason, experimenters often create carefully constrained experimental lists or check randomly generated lists to avoid known causes of order artifacts (e.g., short-term stimulus or response repetition). Creating appropriately structured pseudorandom lists can be a difficult and time-consuming task in generating psychological experiments. Mix is a Windows program that can generate pseudorandomized orders according to complex, user-speci
