Climatic, ecological, and socioeconomic factors associated with West Nile virus incidence in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.

The integrated effects of the many risk factors associated with West Nile virus (WNV) incidence are complex and not well understood. We studied an array of risk factors in and around Atlanta, GA, that have been shown to be linked with WNV in other locations. This array was comprehensive and included climate and meteorological metrics, vegetation characteristics, land use / land cover analyses, and socioeconomic factors. Data on mosquito abundance and WNV mosquito infection rates were obtained for 58 sites and covered 2009-2011, a period following the combined storm water - sewer overflow remed

Impact of unfounded vaccine safety concerns on the nationwide measles-rubella immunization campaign, Georgia, 2008.

Vaccine safety fears following media reports of adverse events led to low (50.3%) coverage in a supplementary measles-rubella immunization campaign in Georgia in 2008. Review of adverse events associated with the campaign identified 432 reports (<0.1% of ∼ 493,000 vaccinees) including 338 (78.2%) cases of syncope. There were no deaths. Causality assessment was performed for 79 cases perceived by providers as severe and with clinical details available. Conditions likely caused by the vaccine were identified in 13 (16.5%) cases (allergic and local reactions, thrombocytopenia). Thirty-seven (46.8

Entamoeba histolytica: the serine-rich gene polymorphism-based genetic variability of clinical isolates from Georgia.

It is generally accepted that a majority of individuals infected by Entamoeba histolytica do not develop symptomatic disease. However, the parasite and the host factors contributing to the development of the disease, remain undetermined. It is also unclear why certain individuals develop extra-intestinal amebiasis without exhibiting apparent intestinal symptoms. An outbreak of amebic liver abscess in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1998-1999 suggested that the causative E. histolytica strain had an unusual propensity for extra-intestinal spread. To correlate the genetic differences with pathogenic potenti

Multilevel insights into obesity, race/ethnicity, and survival in early-onset colorectal cancer in Georgia.

PURPOSE: To examine how county-level obesity status affects early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) survival across racial groups and survival timeframes in Georgia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the 2010 to 2020 Georgia Cancer Registry, linked with County Health Rankings. The primary exposures were race/ethnicity and county-level obesity rates. Outcomes were survival time from diagnosis to 12, 36, and 60 months. Traditional and piecewise Cox regression models were used. RESULTS: Among 6291 patients, 63.4% lived in high-obesity areas, and 53.3% were White p

Tropical cyclone exposure and risk of adverse birth outcomes in urban and rural areas of Georgia.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are highly destructive weather disasters. Prior studies of TCs and birth outcomes often examined single storms or single TC characteristics (e.g. maximum wind speed) and rarely assessed urban/rural differences. To better understand TC impacts on perinatal health, we evaluated associations between multiple TC exposure metrics and several adverse birth outcomes and considered urban-rural variations. We conducted a population-based time series analysis of 2436 478 singleton births in Georgia from 2000-2018, in which individual-level state birth records were aggregated to t

Chemical Composition Analysis of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae) in Georgia and Development of Innovative Valorization Technologies.

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.), a wild berry abundant in Georgia, is a rich source of bioactive compounds, including antioxidants, fatty acids, and phenolic compounds, with significant potential for applications in food, nutraceutical, and cosmetic industries. Despite its traditional uses, the physicochemical properties and valorization potential of Georgian sea buckthorn remain underexplored. This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition of sea buckthorn berries from three distinct regions of Georgia (Adjara, Samtskhe-Javakheti, and Imereti) and develop innovative, environment

Service capacity of institutions serving the mental health needs of persons living with HIV in Georgia.

This study mapped the availability, integration, and referral patterns of mental health (MH) and substance use disorder (SUD) services for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Georgia. PLWH face a heightened burden of MH conditions, compounded by systemic and social barriers. In Georgia, these challenges are exacerbated by fragmented healthcare system, centralized HIV care, and limited service integration. Cross-sectional survey was conducted between January-August 2024 using a structured questionnaire distributed to 80 institutions across 11 regions of Georgia, including MH centers, HIV-focused N

Challenges and perspectives of surgical treatment of liver failure. Current status and last achievements in Georgia.

Liver transplantation is considered to be the last hope of treatment for irreversible liver failure caused by different diffuse and/or space-occupying lesions of this organ. The strict limitation of the donor organs stipulates for development of alternative approaches for the solving this problem. The presented review of literature and our experience aims to discuss the modern aspects of management of different hepatic pathologies causing liver failure with the view of creation of the auxiliary, bioengineer-based functional tissues and/or organs and innovative surgical interventions allowing t

Measles and rubella seroprevalence among adults in Georgia in 2015: helping guide the elimination efforts.

A large-scale measles outbreak (11 495 reported cases, 60% aged ≥15 years) occurred in Georgia during 2013-2015. A nationwide, multistage, stratified cluster serosurvey for hepatitis B and C among persons aged ≥18 years conducted in Georgia in late 2015 provided an opportunity to assess measles and rubella (MR) susceptibility after the outbreak. Residual specimens from 3125 participants aged 18-50 years were tested for Immunoglobulin G antibodies against MR using ELISA. Nationwide, 6.3% (95% CI 4.9%-7.6%) of the surveyed population were seronegative for measles and 8.6% (95% CI 7.1%-10.1%) wer

Founding Physicians of the Medical College of Georgia and Their Connections to Crawford Long and the First Surgical Anesthetic.

Milton Antony (1789-1839), an apprenticed trained physician, began educating medical apprentices in 1826 and helped to establish the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in 1829. Antony recruited additional faculty, Louis Dugas (anatomy and physiology), and Paul Eve (surgery), and together they worked to promote the dissemination of new medical knowledge and enhance and reform medical education. As a result of their efforts, the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal (SMSJ) was established in 1836. The SMSJ became the most successful and widely read regional medical journal.
