Detection of Helicobacter pylori DNA in the saliva of patients complaining of halitosis.

Helicobacter pylori infection, which causes peptic ulcers and gastric cancer, is considered a possible cause of halitosis. Recently, the oral cavity was identified as a possible H. pylori reservoir, particularly in the presence of periodontal disease, which is a cause of halitosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate by PCR the prevalence of oral H. pylori in the saliva of subjects complaining of halitosis. Samples were obtained from 326 non-dyspeptic subjects, comprising 251 subjects with actual malodour and 75 subjects without halitosis. DNA was extracted from the samples, and the pres

Is transmission of bacteria that cause halitosis from pets to humans possible?

OBJECTIVE: Bacteria that cause halitosis naturally colonize the animal's mouth. The possibility of transmission of these bacteria from pets to human is an intriguing question. Therefore, the possible correlation between halitosis and regular contact of dental patients with pet animals was the aim of the presented study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study covered 84 patients suffering from halitosis and 40 healthy controls aged 20-62 years. Each person completed a questionnaire and was then examined for organoleptic score, volatile sulphur compounds (VSC) and evaluation of low molecular mass ami

Clinical and measurement variables affecting halitosis intensity following cysteine challenge test.

The cysteine challenge test is a reliable and efficient method for halitosis diagnosis and assessing treatment effectiveness by measuring the capacity to produce hydrogen sulfide. However, several aspects related to the test including evaluation timing and total duration following cysteine loading has not been investigated in-depth and a standardized protocol is yet to be established. This observational study compared concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) following cysteine challenge at various time points based on different measurement tools to investigate clinical factors influe

Halitosis vaccines targeting FomA, a biofilm-bridging protein of fusobacteria nucleatum.

Halitosis (bad breath) is estimated to influence more than half of the world's population with varying degree of intensity. More than 85% of halitosis originates from oral bacterial infections. Foul-smelling breath mainly results from bacterial production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. To date, major treatments for elimination of oral malodor include periodontal therapy combined with antibiotics or antimicrobial agents, and mechanical approaches including tooth and tongue cleaning. These treatments may transiently reduce VSCs but carry risks

The relationship between volatile sulfur compounds and major halitosis-inducing factors.

BACKGROUND: Although tongue coating and periodontal conditions have been reported to be major halitosis-inducing factors, the relationship between volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) and these 2 major factors is not yet fully understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of VSC concentrations to tongue coating and periodontal health. METHODS: Forty subjects (mean age 33.3 years, range 14 to 64 years) were enrolled in this study. Gas chromatography was performed to analyze each VSC component from the mouth air sampled prior to tongue scraping, after tongue scraping, and aft

Endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of persistent halitosis after pharyngeal flap surgery.

A patient presenting with persistent dramatically offensive fetid malodor 1 year after pharyngeal flap surgery is described. Nasendoscopic examination revealed the presence of a foreign body within the nasopharynx lying on the flap. The foreign body was immediately removed by endoscopic telebiopter and revealed itself to be a gauze pad forgotten during the pharyngeal flap surgery. Modern endoscopic equipment allowed both quick diagnosis of this very rare complication and immediate and simple treatment under topical anesthesia.

Halitosis associated volatile sulphur compound levels in patients with laryngopharyngeal reflux.

Previous reports have suggested that laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) may cause halitosis. However, it remains unclear if LPR is a risk factor for halitosis. The aim of this study was to investigate if patients diagnosed with LPR have an increased probability of halitosis compared to a normal population. Fifty-eight patients complaining of LPR symptoms and 35 healthy subjects were included in the study. A LPR diagnosis was made using an ambulatory 24-h double pH-probe monitor, which is the gold standard diagnostic tool for LPR. Additionally, halitosis was evaluated by measuring the levels of vol
