Case Report: Bocavirus Infection Radiologically Resembling a Congestive Heart Failure in a Patient with Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

Background: Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a viral pathogen from the genus Bocaparvovirus (family Parvoviridae, subfamily Parvovirinae) discovered in 2005. Most of available literature is about HBoV in children and adults with hematological malignancies and in otherwise healthy children with respiratory infections. Information regarding infection in the adult population with solid tumors is scarce. Case Report: We report the case of a 51-year-old male with metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment who presented with fever, dyspnea, dry cough, and pleuritic pa

Respiratory viral coinfection in a birth cohort of infants in rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory illnesses are a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality in children. Coinfection with multiple respiratory viruses is common. Although the effects of each virus have been studied individually, the impacts of coinfection on disease severity are less understood. METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed of a maternal influenza vaccine trial conducted between 2011 and 2014 in Nepal. Prospective weekly household-based active surveillance of infants was conducted from birth to 180 days of age. Mid-nasal swabs were collected and tested for respiratory syncyti

The association between enteric viruses and necrotizing enterocolitis.

Studies on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) have not largely focused on enteric viruses. In order to demonstrate the association between enteric viruses and NEC, stool specimens of 51 neonates with NEC and 39 "normal" neonates were collected to detect rotavirus (RV), astrovirus (ASV), sapovirus, enterovirus (EV), adenovirus (ADV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and human bocavirus (HBoV). Rotavirus A (RVA), ASV, EBV, and ADV were detected in both the NEC and control groups; however, EV and HBoV were detected only in the NEC group and CMV was not detected in either group. ASV w

New Epidemiological and Clinical Signatures of 18 Pathogens from Respiratory Tract Infections Based on a 5-Year Study.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are a heavy burden on society. However, due to the complex etiology of RTIs, the clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these infections remain challenging, especially in developing countries. METHODS: To determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 18 respiratory pathogens, we analyzed 12,502 patients with acute respiratory infections (ARIs) by performing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on patient pharyngeal swabs. RESULTS: Samples positive for at least 1 pathogen were obtained from 48.42% of the total patients. Of t

Quito's virome: Metagenomic analysis of viral diversity in urban streams of Ecuador's capital city.

In Quito, the microbiological contamination of surface water represents a public health problem, mainly due to the lack of sewage treatment from urban wastewater. Contaminated water contributes to the transmission of many enteric pathogens through direct consumption, agricultural and recreational use. Among the different pathogens present in urban discharges, viruses play an important role on disease, being causes of gastroenteritis, hepatitis, meningitis, respiratory infections, among others. This study analyzes the presence of viruses in highly impacted surface waters of urban rivers using n

Minute Virus of Canines NP1 Protein Interacts with the Cellular Factor CPSF6 To Regulate Viral Alternative RNA Processing.

The NP1 protein of minute virus of canines (MVC) governs production of the viral capsid proteins via its role in pre-mRNA processing. NP1 suppresses polyadenylation and cleavage at its internal site, termed the proximal polyadenylation (pA)p site, to allow accumulation of RNAs that extend into the capsid gene, and it enhances splicing of the upstream adjacent third intron, which is necessary to properly enter the capsid protein open reading frame. We find the (pA)p region to be complex. It contains redundant classical cis-acting signals necessary for the cleavage and polyadenylation reaction a

Frequent detection of bocavirus DNA in German children with respiratory tract infections.

BACKGROUND: In a substantial proportion of respiratory tract diseases of suspected infectious origin, the etiology is unknown. Some of these cases may be caused by the recently described human bocavirus (hBoV). The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and the potential clinical relevance of hBoV in pediatric patients. METHODS: We tested 835 nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) obtained between 2002 and 2005 from pediatric in-patients with acute respiratory tract diseases at the University of Würzburg, Germany, for the presence of hBoV DNA. The specificity of positive PCR reactions was

Epidemiology of Respiratory Viruses in Korean Children Before and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Prospective Study From National Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to a decrease in the seasonal incidence of many respiratory viruses worldwide due to the impact of nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). However, as NPI measures were relaxed, respiratory viral infections re-emerged. We aimed to characterize the epidemiology of respiratory viruses in Korean children during post-COVID-19 pandemic years compared to that before the pandemic. METHODS: A nationwide prospective ongoing surveillance study has been conducted for detection of respiratory viruses between January 2017 and June 2023. We i

Long-Term Dynamics of Pediatric Respiratory Pathogens Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence From Nine Years of Surveillance in the Netherlands (2015-2023).

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are common in children and are caused by viral and bacterial pathogens. However, seasonal variability and limited age-specific data obscure a clear understanding of their epidemiology and clinical outcomes. The annual incidence of respiratory pathogens, co-infections, and disease burden was retrospectively investigated. Clinical data and respiratory swabs were collected from children < 18 years who presented with respiratory symptoms at a Dutch Emergency Room between 2015 and 2023. Swabs were tested for 20 common pathogens using MLPA technology. In total, 35

A new epidemic wave of Bordetella pertussis in paediatric population: impact and role of co-infections in pertussis disease.

BACKGROUND: In recent months, Bordetella pertussis has reappeared after maintaining a low rate for many years. Although pertussis is usually characterized by a favorable course, several factors can contribute to the severity of the disease, such as mixed respiratory infections. In this study, we evaluate B.pertussis cases observed in the pediatric population followed at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital and analyzed the potential impact of co-infections in relation to disease severity. METHODS: From January to May 2024, a total of 1,151 children and adolescents (both inpatients and outpati
