Multiple levels assessment of the RDoC "system for social process" in Eating Disorders: Biological, emotional and cognitive responses to the Trier Social Stress Test.

BACKGROUND: Social dysfunction is a putative risk and maintaining factor for Eating Disorders (EDs). We assessed biological, emotional, and cognitive responses to a psychosocial stressor, in order to provide a multilevel investigation of the RDoC social process system in EDs. METHODS: Patients were recruited among those seeking treatment for an ED. Cortisol response to Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was measured in 105 subjects: 35 women with anorexia nervosa (AN), 32 with bulimia nervosa (BN) and 38 healthy women. Anxiety, hunger, and desire to eat throughout TSST were rated in a subgroup o

Introducing breathlessness as a significant animal welfare issue.

Breathlessness is a negative affective experience relating to respiration, the animal welfare significance of which has largely been underestimated in the veterinary and animal welfare sciences. In this review, we draw attention to the negative impact that breathlessness can have on the welfare of individual animals and to the wide range of situations in which mammals may experience breathlessness. At least three qualitatively distinct sensations of breathlessness are recognised in human medicine--respiratory effort, air hunger and chest tightness--and each of these reflects comparison by cere

Randomised clinical trial of five ear acupuncture points for the treatment of overweight people.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the five ear acupuncture points (Shen-men, Spleen, Stomach, Hunger, Endocrine), generally used in Korean clinics for treating obesity, and compare them with the Hunger acupuncture point. METHODS: A randomised controlled clinical trial was conducted in 91 Koreans (16 male and 75 female, body mass index (BMI)≥23), who had not received any other weight control treatment within the past 6 months. Subjects were divided randomly into treatment I, treatment II or sham control groups and received unilateral auricular acupuncture with indwelling needles replaced

World War II-related post-traumatic stress disorder and breast cancer risk among Israeli women: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is related to adverse health outcomes. There are limited data on PTSD and cancer, which has a long latency period. We investigated the association between World War II (WWII)-related PTSD and subsequent breast cancer (BC) risk among Jewish WWII survivors and examined whether this association was modified by exposure to hunger during WWII. METHODS: We compared 65 BC patients diagnosed in 2005 through 2010 to 200 population-based controls who were members of various organizations for Jewish WWII survivors in I

Appetite and food intake results from phase I studies of anamorelin.

BACKGROUND: Loss of appetite and body weight are potentially devastating, highly prevalent cancer complications. The ghrelin receptor is a mediator of appetite and metabolism, and anamorelin is a novel, orally administered ghrelin receptor agonist. Effects on appetite and food intake may influence body-weight gain but can be difficult to measure in multi-site studies. Here, we summarize two single-centre trials. METHODS: Both trials were phase I, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, partly/wholly crossover studies of healthy young adults. Study 102 tested single anamorelin doses of 1

A preoperative whey protein and glucose drink before hip fracture surgery in the aged improves symptomatic and metabolic recovery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of a carbohydrate-whey protein solution on aged patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Forty patients were randomly assigned to the carbohydrate-whey protein (CHP) group or the control group (CTL). In the CHP group, a mixed solution of CHP was orally administered to patients before surgery: 400 mL was administered on the day before surgery, and 200 mL was administered 3 h before surgery. The size of the liquid dark area in the gastric antrum was measured by ultrasound, and the bleeding volume during surgery wa

Stimulus-dependent sex differences in dyspnoea: Mechanical loading vs. hypercapnia.

Dyspnoea is a multidimensional sensation of breathing discomfort that varies in sensory and affective experience. During exercise, healthy adults commonly report dyspnoea sensations of 'air hunger' and 'work/effort', with females more frequently reporting air hunger at maximal exertion. Interpreting these sex differences and their underlying mechanisms is challenging due to the complex physiological responses associated with exercise. Therefore, this study used laboratory models to target respiratory stimuli and evaluate sex-differences in perceptual and physiological responses to dyspnoea. In

Comparison of perioperative patient comfort with 'enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) approach' versus 'traditional approach' for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative anxiety, hunger, thirst, fatigue, pain along with nausea and vomiting can influence a patient's recovery after surgery. We aimed to compare 'enhanced recovery after surgery' (ERAS) protocol with a traditional perioperative approach to evaluate a patient's recovery after elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: A prospective randomised controlled study was conducted after institutional ethical clearance on 50 patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and divided equally into two groups. In group 1 (traditional); standard fasting guidelines and

Poorer mental health and sleep quality are associated with greater self-reported reward-related eating during pregnancy and postpartum: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Depression, stress, and poor-quality sleep are common during pregnancy and postpartum, but the relationship of these factors with reward-related eating is not well understood. This observational cohort study examines associations of depression, stress, and sleep quality with self-reported reward-related eating in pregnancy and postpartum. METHODS: Participants were enrolled at < 12 weeks gestation and followed through 1 year postpartum. Self-reported measures obtained at baseline and 23-31 weeks postpartum included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Perceived Stress Scale,

Non-caloric sweetener effects on brain appetite regulation in individuals across varying body weights.

Sucralose, a widely used non-caloric sweetener, provides sweet taste without calories. Some studies suggest that non-caloric sweeteners stimulate appetite, possibly owing to the delivery of a sweet taste without the post-ingestive metabolic signals that normally communicate with the hypothalamus to suppress hunger. In a randomized crossover trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02945475 ), 75 young adults (healthy weight, overweight or with obesity) consumed a drink containing sucralose, sweetness-matched sucrose or water. We show that acute consumption of sucralose versus sucrose stimulate

Homeostatic circuits selectively gate food cue responses in insular cortex.

Physiological needs bias perception and attention to relevant sensory cues. This process is 'hijacked' by drug addiction, causing cue-induced cravings and relapse. Similarly, its dysregulation contributes to failed diets, obesity, and eating disorders. Neuroimaging studies in humans have implicated insular cortex in these phenomena. However, it remains unclear how 'cognitive' cortical representations of motivationally relevant cues are biased by subcortical circuits that drive specific motivational states. Here we develop a microprism-based cellular imaging approach to monitor visual cue respo

Respiratory sensations in subjects who lack a ventilatory response to CO2.

An urge to breath is perceived during breath hold and hypercapnia (termed 'air hunger') and during heavy exercise (often termed 'shortness of breath'). To better understand the neural mechanisms responsible for these sensations we studied five patients (8-17 years old) with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) who lack ventilatory response to CO2. CCHS patients reported no respiratory discomfort during CO2 inhalation or during maximal breath hold which was of much longer duration than age-matched controls. However, all 3 CCHS patients who exercised heavily reported some sensation

Perioperative changes in prouroguanylin hormone response in severely obese subjects after bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Prouroguanylin is a gut hormone converted into uroguanylin in the hypothalamus. Uroguanylin induces satiety through guanylyl-cyclase-2C receptor signaling. However, little is known about the role of this hormone in regulating human food intake. METHODS: In prospective-cohort study, prouroguanylin profile changes were determined during meal stimulation in obese patients 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. We also investigated whether these changes play a role in the anorexigenic effect of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. RESULTS: The study enrolled 8 health

Eating disorder pathology and menstrual cycle fluctuations in eating variables in oral contraceptive users and non-users.

Food intake and food cravings fluctuate across the menstrual cycle in women who are not using oral contraceptives (OCs), however less is known about cyclical variations in eating variables in women using OCs. Furthermore, few studies have examined the relationship between eating disorder pathology and menstrual cycle fluctuations in eating behaviors. In the present study, we examined self-report, retrospective ratings of food cravings intensity, hunger level, and amount eaten across the menstrual cycle in 67 non-OC users and across exogenous hormone regimens in 81 OC users. We also investigate

Investigation of setmelanotide, an MC4R agonist, for obesity in individuals with Smith-Magenis syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Smith Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by RAI1 haploinsufficiency. Obesity in people with SMS is believed partially due to dysfunction of the proximal melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) pathway. We therefore studied effects of treatment with the MC4R agonist setmelanotide on obesity and hunger, as well as metabolic, cardiac and safety, in individuals with SMS. METHODS: People with SMS received once-daily setmelanotide injections, with the dose titrated bi-weekly to a maximum of 3 mg over ∼1 month; and a full-dose treatment duration of 3mo. The primary outcome w

Food aid in emergencies and public health nutrition.

HUNGER LEAVES SCARS: The visible kind may be born by the survivors of famine. Less visible, but all the more damaging, are the long-term effects of hunger that run through families through generations. Hunger passed from mother to child represents a ruinous inheritance. It marks a cycle of hunger that transcends generations, unless the cycle is broken. Food aid provided at crucial times in the lives of women and infants represents an investment for future. Thus, in contrast to former conceptions of food aid as an exclusively life-saving vehicle, modern aims of food aid also include preventing

The Impacts of Programs and Policies to Address Food Insecurity: An Analysis of Change in Income.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This paper examines hunger over time to analyze how food insecurity is impacted by reduced income, including household funding from the government. Federal policies and community-based programs have the ability to prevent increases in food insecurity, particularly for populations that have risk factors, such as households with children; single-parent households; low-income households, especially those in rural areas; Black and Hispanic households; and, households experiencing economic hardships. METHODS: This study is bas ed on a cross-sectional survey that was administ

Neonatal body composition, salivary feeding gene expression, and feeding outcomes in infants of diabetic mothers.

INTRODUCTION: Infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs) may exhibit decreased oral intake, requiring nasogastric feedings and prolonged hospitalization. The objective of this study was to explore whether saliva serves as an informative biofluid for detecting expression of hunger signaling and energy homeostasis modulator genes and to perform exploratory analyses examining expression profiles, body composition, and feeding outcomes in late preterm and term IDMs and infants born to mothers with normoglycemia during pregnancy. METHODS: In this prospective cohort pilot study, infants born at ≥ 35 weeks'

Eating Behavior and Satiety With Virtual Reality Meals Compared With Real Meals: Randomized Crossover Study.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders and obesity are serious health problems with poor treatment outcomes and high relapse rates despite well-established treatments. Several studies have suggested that virtual reality technology could enhance the current treatment outcomes and could be used as an adjunctive tool in their treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the differences between eating virtual and real-life meals and test the hypothesis that eating a virtual meal can reduce hunger among healthy women. METHODS: The study included 20 healthy women and used a randomized crossover desi
