OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of patient narratives that discuss decision processes versus patient experiences on decisions about treatments for early stage breast cancer.
METHODS: We recruited 300 women with no previous history of breast cancer to imagine that they had been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and to choose between mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation. Before learning about their treatment options, participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions with videotaped stories from fictitious cancer survivors, using a 2 (content: experience versus process) ×

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy is a global issue of public health importance. Due to the low rates of help-seeking in response to IPV, research on survivors' help-seeking behaviors is scarce, particularly within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The present study provides a cross-national evidence of informal and formal help-seeking patterns among pregnant women experiencing IPV.
METHODS: This study made use of population-based data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program from 54 LMICs, collected between 2005 and 2020 (N = 359,027). Applying

A pilot study conducted with young women in an urban clinic examined a Transtheoretical Model processes of change measure to better understand strategies and behavioral mechanics that facilitate seeking gonorrhea and chlamydia screening. This information may be useful in developing interventions to improve sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening. Consistent with other studies, greater use of experiential and behavioral processes was associated with the action/maintenance stages for seeking gonorrhea and chlamydia screening.

OBJECTIVE: Dysregulated behaviors including substance use, disordered eating, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) have significant negative implications for individuals and health systems. It is therefore paramount to understand factors influencing behavioral dysregulation, to inform prevention and treatment approaches. The literature suggests that distress and rumination (brooding) prompt individuals to engage in behavioral dysregulation for distraction (Emotional Cascade Model), although these concepts have limited investigation in clinical, treatment-seeking samples, particularly alongside n

Based on the Theory of Motivated Information Management (TMIM), this study examines how undergraduates manage information related to post-graduation pathways, with a particular focus on their interactions with teachers, family, and friends. In addition, it explores how individuals perceive and process information in uncertain situations, specifically examining undergraduates' behaviors and decision-making regarding employment and further education. Furthermore, this study sheds light on the decision-making processes of students facing graduation choices, particularly in terms of information ma

This cross-sectional study examines health information-seeking behaviors and access to and use of technology among rural African Americans, Caucasians, and Hispanics. There was a low level of health information seeking across the sample. Few used smartphones or tablets and did not endorse receiving health information from their health care provider by e-mail. Printed materials remained a source of health information as did friends and family. Information should be shared using multiple platforms including more passive methods such as television and radio. More research is needed to ensure the

Substance use disorder is conceptualized as a form of maladaptive learning, whereby drug-associated memories, elicited by the presence of stimuli related to drug contexts or cues, contribute to the persistent recurrence of craving and the reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior. Hence, use of pharmacology or non-pharmacology way to disrupt drug-related memory holds promise to prevent relapse. Several studies have shown that memories can be unstable and susceptible to modification during the retrieval reactivation phase, termed the "reconsolidation time window". In this study, we use the classic

BACKGROUND: Recent A(H1N1) studies suggest that intrapersonal and interpersonal factors may exert influence on people's preventive behaviors for avoiding the flu during pandemics.
AIMS: Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and vaccinations play key roles in containing disease transmission during a pandemic. We examined how intrapersonal and interpersonal factors influenced adoption of NPIs and vaccine uptake during the A(H1N1) pandemic of 2009.
METHOD: The data come from a nationally representative sample survey of 1,569 American adults. Hierarchical multivariable logistic regression was c

This scoping review aims to summarize current research on help-seeking behaviors and patterns among children who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) victimization and/or are at high risk of exploitation. Because the literature on help-seeking specific to CSEC victimization is limited, the current review was expanded to summarize findings from help-seeking research for children who have experienced harms that often co-occur with CSEC, such as maltreatment and homelessness. The authors searched three large article databases (PsycInfo, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of Scien

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cancer increasingly rely on online information about their disease. However, the impact of clinicians' responses to patients presenting this information remains unclear. This randomized experiment tested the effects of oncologists' communication approaches on patients' trust, satisfaction, and intentions to seek and discuss online information. Additionally, we explored moderating effects of patients' psychological characteristics.
METHODS: In an online vignette experiment, we manipulated clinicians' communication approaches (patient-centered vs. clinician-centered) in
