Hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease in African Americans and whites with HIV/AIDS.

Therapeutic advances have resulted in an epidemiological shift in the predominant causes of hospitalization for patients with HIV/AIDS. An emerging cause for hospitalization in this patient population is cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, data are limited regarding how this shift affects different racial groups. The objective of this observational, retrospective study was to evaluate the association between race and hospitalization for CVD in African Americans and whites with HIV/AIDS and to compare the types of CVD-related hospitalizations between African Americans and whites with HIV/AID

Association between hospital finances, payer mix, and complications after hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: deficiencies in the current healthcare reimbursement system and future implications.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing implementation of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), there are little data on its financial implications. We analyzed hospital cost and reimbursement data within the context of insurance provider type and postoperative complications. METHODS: Clinicopathologic variables, hospital costs, and reimbursement for all patients undergoing CRS/HIPEC at a single institution from 2009 to 2013 were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 64 patients underwent CRS/HIPEC. Median PCI score was 19, and average operative time was 550 min.

[Disability, the risk of disability and changes in work capacity-- unacceptable conditions for insurance in occupational injuries and diseases].

According to Croatian legislation disability, risk of disability and altered work capacity are prerequisites for recognition of job injuries, occupational diseases, and, consequently, of the worker's special rights. That is also valid for all areas of insurance. The legislation, if applied, would make it impossible for a great number of insured workers to realize their particular rights based on work related health damage, especially in the field of health insurance and reinsurance of health care costs. Health insurance boards, along with insurance companies, manage by evading the condition of

A cohort cost analysis of lumbar laminectomy--current trends in surgeon and hospital fees distribution.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spine-related health-care expenditures accounted for $86 billion dollars in 2005, a 65% increase from 1997. However, when adjusting for inflation, surgeons have seen decreased reimbursement rates over the last decade. PURPOSE: To assess contribution of surgeon fees to overall procedure cost, we reviewed the charges and reimbursements for a noninstrumented lumbar laminectomy and compared the amounts reimbursed to the hospital and to the surgeon at a major academic institution. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective review of costs associated with lumbar laminectomies. PATIEN

The Financial Sustainability of Programs to Initiate Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Emergency Department Settings.

BACKGROUND: The US is experiencing an epidemic of opioid misuse and mortality. Effective treatments are available, including medications for opioid use disorders (MOUD), but they are greatly underused due to a variety of barriers. In response, some US hospitals have established programs to identify emergency department (ED) patients with opioid use disorders (OUD) and begin treatment with MOUD ("ED induction"). For this model to be widely adopted, financial sustainability for hospitals is critical. Little is known about the financial aspects of ED-based treatment models, including insurance bi
