Zeolites with Divalent Ions as Carriers in the Delivery of Epigallocatechin Gallate.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a compound with very high therapeutic potential in the treatment of osteoporosis and cancer. The disadvantages of this compound are its low stability and low bioavailability. Therefore, carriers for EGCG are sought to increase its use. In this work, new carriers are proposed, i.e., zeolites containing divalent ions of magnesium, calcium, strontium, and zinc in their structure. EGCG is retained on the carrier surface by strong interactions with divalent ions. Due to the presence of strong interactions, EGCG is released in a controlled manner from the carrier-i

The Quantum Tunneling of Ions Model Can Explain the Pathophysiology of Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a well-known pathological entity in clinical practice. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms behind tinnitus seem to be elusive and cannot provide a comprehensive understanding of its pathogenesis and clinical manifestations. Hence, in the present study, we explore the mathematical model of ions' quantum tunneling to propose an original pathophysiological mechanism for the sensation of tinnitus. The present model focuses on two major aspects: The first aspect is the ability of ions, including sodium, potassium, and calcium, to depolarize the membrane potential of inner hair ce

Electron transfer and intersystem crossing triggered fluorescence quenching detection of mercury ions.

Via a specific fluorescence quenching response, organic compound L serves as an excellent probe for Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The underlying detection mechanism is proposed based on the analyses of orbital interactions between probe L and Hg2+, which is new and intrinsically different from the previously proposed one. By investigating the excitation process and the excited state deactivation process of the organometallic compound formed by L and Hg2+, two non-emissive channels, namely intermolecular electron transfer and intersystem crossing, are observed. The co-effect of the two channels lea

An environment-friendly composite as an adsorbent for removal Cu (II) ions.

The low-cost composite film was prepared by incorporating chitosan, berry soap fruit extract (rarasaponin), and bentonite as the raw materials. The produced chitosan/rarasaponin/bentonite (CRB) composite exhibits outstanding adsorption capability toward copper metal ions (Cu(II)). A series of static adsorption experiments were carried out to determine the isotherm and kinetic properties of CRB composite in the adsorption process. The adsorption equilibrium shows a good fit with the Langmuir isotherm model; the CRB composite has maximum uptake of Cu (II) of 412.70 mg/g; the kinetic adsorption d

Using pretreated chestnut endothelium to adsorb lead and cadmium ions from water.

The nature chestnut endothelium, as waster source from chestnut (Castaneamollissima) has pigment effecting the process of adsorbing heavy metalions, and the decolorized endothelium has low adsorption capacity. In order to raise the adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions, the discolor endothelium was pretreated by acidic formaldehyde, cis-butenedioic acid and irradiation. Thermodynamic and kinetics model was fitted to the adsorption of Pb (II) and Cd(II) ions onto modified chestnut endothelium by cis-butenedioic acid. Three independent variables including pH, adsorption time and contact temper

In the present work we have studied in vitro the effect of increasing red cell Ca2+ ions on human erythrophagocytosis by peripheral monocyte-derived autologous macrophages. In addition, the relative contribution to phagocytosis of phosphatidylserine exposure, autologous IgG binding, complement deposition and Gárdos channel activity was also investigated. Monocytes were obtained after ficoll-hypaque fractionation and induced to transform by adherence to glass coverslips, for 24 h at 37°C in a RPMI medium, containing 10% fetal calf serum. Red blood cells (RBC) were loaded with Ca2+ using 10 μM A

Computational modelling of local calcium ions release from calcium phosphate-based scaffolds.

A variety of natural or synthetic calcium phosphate (CaP)-based scaffolds are currently produced for dental and orthopaedic applications. These scaffolds have been shown to stimulate bone formation due to their biocompatibility, osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity. The release of the [Formula: see text] ions from these scaffolds is of great interest in light of the aforementioned properties. It can depend on a number of biophysicochemical phenomena such as dissolution, diffusion and degradation, which in turn depend on specific scaffold characteristics such as composition and morphology. Modelling the effects of salt solutions on the hydration of calcium ions.

Classical molecular dynamics simulations of several aqueous alkali halide salt solutions have been used to determine the effect of electrolytes on the structure of water and the hydration properties of calcium ions. Compared with the simulations of Ca(2+) ions in pure liquid water, the frequency of water exchange in the first hydration shell of calcium, which is a fundamental process in controlling the reactivity of calcium(ii) aqua-ions, is drastically reduced in the presence of other electrolytes in solution. The strong stabilization of the hydration shell of Ca(2+) occurs not only when the

Removal of Cr(VI) ions by adsorption onto sodium alginate-polyaniline nanofibers.

In the present study, sodium alginate-polyaniline (SAP) nanofibers are evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI) ion from aqueous solution by batch mode. The SAP nanofibers are characterized using FTIR, SEM, EDX and XRD techniques. The influences of various parameters such as pH, dosage, co-anions, contact time and concentration on Cr(VI) removal efficiency are investigated. The results of FTIR, SEM and EDX analysis reveals the removal of Cr(VI) ions by SAP nanofibers. Also, the existence of the electrostatic interaction between the Cr(VI) ions and SAP nanofibers is further proved by

Computational simulation of a new system modelling ions electromigration through biological membranes.

BACKGROUND: The interest in cell membrane has grown drastically for their important role as controllers of biological functions in health and illness. In fact most important physiological processes are intimately related to the transport ability of the membrane, such as cell adhesion, cell signaling and immune defense. Furthermore, ion migration is connected with life-threatening pathologies such as metastases and atherosclerosis. Consequently, a large amount of research is consecrated to this topic. To better understand cell membranes, more accurate models of ionic flux are required and also

Ligand action on sodium, potassium, and calcium channels: role of permeant ions.

Ion channels are targets for many naturally occurring toxins and small-molecule drugs. Despite great progress in the X-ray crystallography of ion channels, we still do not have a complete understanding of the atomistic mechanisms of channel modulation by ligands. In particular, the importance of the simultaneous interaction of permeant ions with the ligand and the channel protein has not been the focus of much attention. Considering these interactions often allows one to rationalize the highly diverse experimental data within the framework of relatively simple structural models. This has been

Enhanced adsorption of mercury ions on thiol derivatized single wall carbon nanotubes.

Thiol-derivatized single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT-SH) powders were synthesized by reacting acid-cut SWCNTs with cysteamine hydrochloride using carbodiimide coupling. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the successful functionalization of the SWCNTs. SWCNT-SH powders exhibited a threefold higher adsorption capacity for Hg(II) ions compared to pristine SWCNTs, and a fourfold higher adsorption capacity compared to activated carbon. The influence of adsorption time, pH, initial metal concentration and adsorbent dose on Hg(II) ion removal was

Quantification of the uptake of silver nanoparticles and ions to HepG2 cells.

The toxic mechanism of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is still debating, partially because of the common co-occurrence and the lack of methods for separation of AgNPs and Ag(+) in biological matrices. For the first time, Triton-X 114-based cloud point extraction (CPE) was proposed to separate AgNPs and Ag(+) in the cell lysates of exposed HepG2 cells. Cell lysates were subjected to CPE after adding Na2S2O3, which facilitated the transfer of AgNPs into the nether Triton X-114-rich phase by salt effect and the preserve of Ag(+) in the upper aqueous phase through the formation of hydrophilic comple

Insight into the interaction of metal ions with TroA from Streptococcus suis.

BACKGROUND: The scavenging ability of sufficient divalent metal ions is pivotal for pathogenic bacteria to survive in the host. ATP-binding cassette (ABC)-type metal transporters provide a considerable amount of different transition metals for bacterial growth. TroA is a substrate binding protein for uptake of multiple metal ions. However, the function and structure of the TroA homologue from the epidemic Streptococcus suis isolates (SsTroA) have not been characterized. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we determined the crystal structure of SsTroA from a highly pathogenic streptococcal to

Preparation of xanthated bentonite and its removal behavior for Pb(II) ions.

Xanthate was successfully grafted onto bentonite by a relatively simple solution reaction. The obtained xanthated bentonite (XBent) was characterized by FT-IR spectrophotometer, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), particle size analysis, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XBent acting as a type of environmentally friendly adsorbent was applied to remove lead ions from aqueous solutions. The optimum conditions were as follows: [Pb(2+)] = 500 mg L(-1), [XBent] = 2 g L(-1), pH = 5.0; oscillating 60 min under 200 rpm at 25 degrees C. The removal rate of lead was up to 99.

Detection of copper ions using microcantilever immunosensors and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

A sensitive and specific monoclonal antibody (designated as mAb6A9) recognizing a Cu(II)-ethylenediamine-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid (EDTA) complex but not metal-free EDTA was obtained by using an 1-(4-aminobenzyl)-EDTA-Cu(II) complex covalently coupled to a carrier protein as an immunogen to immunize the Balb/c mice. A mAb6A9-modified microcantilever sensor (MCS) was developed. A bending response was found to occur at or below 1 ng mL(-1) of Cu(II)-EDTA complex. An indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA) was developed with mAb6A9. The icELISA had a half maximum inhibit

Ca, Cd, Zn, and their ions interacting with Cytosine: a theoretical study.

Metal atoms play a major role in the chemical behavior of biological systems. In this work, known issues of the metal-base interactions, such as the stabilization of different tautomers of cytosine that could be incompatible with the DNA double helix, are researched using DFT methods. Ca-, Zn-, and Cd-cytosine in neutral and ionic forms were studied at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. Several neutral and ionic isomers were found within an interval of 10 kcal/mol of relative stability, with the most stable isomer in each group being a compound derived from the canonical isomer of cytosine, except for t
