Wavefront-guided photorefractive keratectomy with and without iris registration: comparison of astigmatic correction.

This study aimed to compare the visual outcomes after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), with and without the iris registration (IR) technology. The retrospective cohort study was performed for wavefront-guided PRK using the Technolas 217z100 excimer laser system in patients with myopic astigmatism (cylinder error - 2 to - 4 diopter [D]). Eyes were divided into IR group (IRPRK) and non-IR group (non-IRPRK). Visual acuity (VA), cylindrical refraction, and the astigmatic vector components using the Alpins method were compared between the two groups preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Fi

Epithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy and Corneal Cross-linking for Keratoconus: The Tel-Aviv Protocol.

PURPOSE: To present the Tel-Aviv Protocol for patients with progressive keratoconus, which consists of epithelial photorefractive keratectomy (ePRK), and corneal cross-linking (CXL). METHODS: This was a retrospective case series of 20 consecutive patients diagnosed as having progressive keratoconus at Care-Vision Laser Centers, Tel Aviv, Israel. The Tel-Aviv Protocol included laser epithelial ablation using the EX500 excimer laser (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX) with 50% of the manifest refractive astigmatism (on the same axis) while the spherical ablation is added so as not to exc

Clinical outcomes of Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy to treat low to moderate myopic astigmatism.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the refractive and visual outcomes of Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) in the treatment of low to moderate myopic astigmatism. METHODS: This retrospective study enrolled a total of 47 eyes that had undergone Transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy. Preoperative cylinder diopters ranged from - 0.75D to - 2.25D (mean - 1.11 ± 0.40D), and the sphere was between - 1.50D to - 5.75D. Visual outcomes and vector analysis of astigmatism that included error ratio (ER), correction ratio (CR), error of magnitude (EM) and error of angle (EA) were evaluated

Effect of topical diclofenac on postoperative photorefractive keratectomy pain: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A major disadvantage of photorefractive keratectomy is postoperative pain and discomfort. This study aims to evaluate whether topical diclofenac 0.1% therapy adds any extra benefit to systemic diclofenac in controlling pain after photorefractive keratectomy. DESIGN: Prospective randomized, double-masked clinical trial applied in the Khatam-al-Anbia Eye Hospital, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty-eight individuals (age range, 18-35 years) having bilateral photorefractive keratectomy for myopic correction with or without astigmatism. METHOD

Superficial keratectomy for chronic corneal ulcers refractory to medical treatment in 36 cats.

OBJECTIVE: To review the outcome of a case series in which superficial keratectomy was used as a treatment for chronic corneal ulceration. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study ANIMALS STUDIED: Thirty-six cats (41 eyes) with ulcerative keratitis. RESULTS: Forty-one superficial lamellar keratectomies were performed. Thirty-two and a half percent (32.5%) of the ulcers were resolved within 2 weeks and 85% within 4 weeks after surgery. Management of residual refractive error after laser in situ keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the various steps and methods in managing residual refractive error after laser in situ keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). RECENT FINDINGS: Past studies have shown the efficacy and safety of flap relifts over recuts and for surface ablation over the flap. Other previous and also more recent studies show the use of a femtosecond laser for side cuts only. Recently, the creation of a femtosecond mini flap has been described. New studies also demonstrate the use of collagen cross-linking in postrefractive surgery ectasia. SUMMARY: Residual refracti

PURPOSE: Inadequate pain control after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) surgery can be a source of distress for patients and ophthalmologists. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of extended-release diclofenac for the management of pain after PRK surgery. METHODS: In this prospective clinical trial study, patients in the case group were given extended-release diclofenac pre- and postoperatively, and patients in the control group were given acetaminophen and ibuprofen pre- and postoperatively. Patients were examined 2 days after PRK surgery. Pain, photophobia, and functiona

Recurrent corneal hypertrophic scar after laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy with mitomycin C treatment.

PURPOSE: To report recurrent corneal hypertrophic scar after laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK) with mitomycin C treatment. METHODS: Two patients experienced decreased visual acuity in 1 eye arising from elevated corneal opacity about 12 months after uneventful LASEK with intraoperative mitomycin C application. The elevated opacities were easily removed mechanically. RESULTS: Pathologic examinations showed irregular arrangement of collagen fibers and myofibroblasts, diagnosed as hypertrophic scars. The lesions recurred at about 4-month intervals, despite repeated debridement wi

Successful treatment of superficial corneal irregularity by lamellar keratectomy using the femtosecond laser.

The authors report successful vision restoration after cataract surgery using a femtosecond laser in a patient with superficial corneal irregularity. A 62-year-old man with corneal irregularity and a cataract in the left eye was referred for treatment. The superficial corneal opacity causing the irregularity was mainly located within the superficial anterior cornea. To acquire a stable keratometric value, which is important for accurate calculation of intraocular lens power, lamellar keratectomy using a femtosecond laser (IntraLase; AMO, Irvine, CA) was performed to smooth the cornea surface.
