FOXG1 variants can be associated with milder phenotypes than congenital Rett syndrome with unassisted walking and language development.

Since 2008, FOXG1 haploinsufficiency has been linked to a severe neurodevelopmental phenotype resembling Rett syndrome but with earlier onset. Most patients are unable to sit, walk, or speak. For years, FOXG1 sequencing was only prescribed in such severe cases, limiting insight into the full clinical spectrum associated with this gene. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) now enables unbiased diagnostics. Through the European Reference Network for Rare Malformation Syndromes, Intellectual and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders, we gathered data from patients with heterozygous FOXG1 variants presen

Does the duration matter? Effect of cochlear implantation on language development in Mandarin-speaking children with hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have shown that cochlear implantation (CI) can influence language development in children with severe-to-profound hearing loss. However, whether the age of implantation and duration of CI use influence language development remains unclear, particularly in Mandarin-speaking children with hearing loss. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of CI-related variables on language development in these children. METHODS: The present study recruited 133 Mandarin-speaking children with hearing loss, aged between 36 and 71 months chronologically, from a nonprofit organ

Congenital Cytomegalovirus and Human Immunodeficiency Virus: Effects on Hearing, Speech and Language Development, and Clinical Outcomes in Children.

Prenatal infections can have adverse effects on an infant's hearing, speech, and language development. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are two such infections that may lead to these complications, especially when left untreated. CMV is commonly associated with sensorineural hearing loss in children, and it can also be associated with anatomical abnormalities in the central nervous system responsible for speech, language, and intellectual acquisition. In terms of speech, language, and hearing, HIV is most associated with conductive and/or sensorineural he

Expressive Dominant Versus Receptive Dominant Language Patterns in Young Children: Findings from the Study to Explore Early Development.

We examined language profiles of 2571 children, 30-68 months old, with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), other developmental disabilities (DD), and typical development from the general population (POP). Children were categorized as expressive dominant (ED), receptive dominant (RD), or nondominant (ND). Within each group, the ED profile was the least frequent. However, children in the ASD group were more likely to display an ED profile than those in the DD or POP groups, and these children were typically younger, had lower nonverbal cognitive skills, and displayed more severe social-affect sympto

Differentiating Autism from Typical Development: Preliminary Findings of Greek Versions of a Pragmatic Language and Social Communication Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: A social pragmatic communication disorder is one of the primary characteristics of children with autism. Although several measures of pragmatics and social communication exist, many are not comprehensive, do not examine the quality of interactions across contexts and interlocutors, and cannot be easily administered and interpreted. The aim of this article is to report on preliminary data collected using the Greek version of comprehensive social communication and pragmatic language questionnaires completed by parents and teachers interacting with young children in different contexts.

Speech and language development in a population of Swedish hearing-impaired pre-school children, a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: There is little information on speech and language development in pre-school children with mild, moderate or severe hearing impairment. The primary aim of the study is to establish a reference material for clinical use covering various aspects of speech and language functions and to relate test values to pure tone audiograms and parents' judgement of their children's hearing and language abilities. METHODS: Nine speech and language tests were applied or modified, both classical tests and newly developed tests. Ninety-seven children with normal hearing and 156 with hearing impairmen

Differences in assertive speech acts produced by children with autism, Asperger syndrome, specific language impairment, and normal development.

The assertive speech acts of children with autism (n = 12) and Asperger syndrome (n = 12), individually matched to children with specific language impairment (SLI; n = 24) and children with normal development (n = 24) were studied in the context of gently structured conversation. These children also completed the false belief test of theory of mind. The children with autism used significantly lower proportions of assertions involving explanations and descriptions than the children with SLI or normal development and significantly lower proportions of assertions involving internal state and expl

Measures of language proficiency as predictors of behavioral difficulties, social and cognitive development in 2-year-old children.

An exploratory study of the relation of language proficiency, behavioral difficulties, and various areas of development was conducted with 64 children ranging from 24 to 29 months of age (M = 25.7 mo.). Data were obtained through language sampling, direct developmental assessment, and maternal reports of children's development and behavior. While scores on measures of expressive language abilities were moderately predictive of scores on measures of behavior problems, a stronger association was found between indices of delayed speech and lower scores on both social and cognitive development. Domain-general multitasking strategy developed from language experience: Neurobehavioral evidence from student interpreters.

Multitasking as a cognitive ability is significant, and yet few studies have investigated how to improve multitasking, especially by language experience. To investigate how language multitasking may enhance domain-general multitasking, this fMRI study compared interpreting students and matched bilingual controls in a non-linguistic dual-task (auditory Task 1, visual Task 2) and examined how their neural data may relate to behavioral performance. Behaviorally, interpreting students showed higher response-time costs in Task 1 but lower costs in Task 2, resulting in faster responses to dual-task

The Effects of Digital Interventions on Language Development in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Interdisciplinary Synthesis.

Background/Objectives: Digital technologies are increasingly used in interventions for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to support language development. However, existing evidence remains fragmented due to heterogeneity in intervention types, participant characteristics, and outcome measures. This systematic review aims to synthesize current empirical findings on the effects of digital interventions on language development in children with ASD and to identify key factors influencing intervention effectiveness. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 202

Development and validation of a natural language processing system to assess quality of physician communication in prostate cancer consultations.

BACKGROUND: AUA guidelines for shared decision making (SDM) in prostate cancer recommend discussion of five content areas in consultations: (1) cancer severity (tumor risk (TR), pathology results (PR)); (2) life expectancy (LE); (3) cancer prognosis (CP); (4) baseline urinary and erectile function (UF and EF); and (5) treatment side effects (erectile dysfunction (ED), urinary incontinence (UI), and irritative urinary symptoms (LUTS)). However, patient retention of information after the visit and inconsistent risk communication by physicians are barriers to informed SDM. We sought to develop na

Short stature and language development in the United Kingdom: a longitudinal analysis of children from the Millennium Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, poverty and impaired growth prevent children from meeting their cognitive developmental potential. There are few studies investigating these relationships in high-income settings. METHODS: Participants were 12,536 children born between 2000 and 2002 in the UK and participating in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS). Short stature was defined as having a height-for-age 2 or more standard deviations below the median (≤ - 2 SDS) at age 3 years. Standardized British Abilities Scales II (BAS II) language measures, used to assess language development a

Language Development in the Second Year of Life: The Case of Children with Sex Chromosome Trisomies Diagnosed before Birth.

Many individual factors, such as early communicative skills, could play a role in explaining later linguistic outcomes. The detection of predictive variables is fundamental to identifying early the children who need intervention. The present study focuses on children with sex chromosome trisomies (SCTs), genetic conditions with an increased risk of developing language delays or impairments. The aims are to analyse their communicative skills at 18 months of age, and identify significant predictors of their later vocabulary size. Participants were 76 18-month-old children (38 with SCTs, and 38 t

A meta-analysis of functional reading systems in typically developing and struggling readers across different alphabetic languages.

Functional neuroimaging research has identified multiple brain regions supporting reading-related activity in typical and atypical readers across different alphabetic languages. Previous meta-analyses performed on these functional magnetic resonance imaging findings typically report significant between-group contrasts comparing typical readers and readers with reading difficulty or a clinical diagnosis of developmental dyslexia. In order to advance our understanding of cross-linguistic convergence of reading-related brain activations for these reader groups, analyses using activation likelihoo

Basic reading skills in Swedish children with late developing language and with or without autism spectrum disorder or ADHD.

Reading skills at age 7-8 years were examined in a community-representative sample of 21 screened and clinically examined children with language delay (LD) followed prospectively from 2.5 years of age. The present study aimed to (1) determine whether these children with a history of LD had deficits in basic reading skills, i.e. decoding and comprehension, compared to the age norms of standardized tests, (2) analyze if there was a relationship between reading outcome and neuropsychiatric diagnosis by comparing three subgroups of children, LD pure, LD+ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and LD+ADHD,

Differences at 17 months: productive language patterns in infants at familial risk for dyslexia and typically developing infants.

Productive vocabulary composition is investigated in 17-month-old children who are participating in an ongoing longitudinal dyslexia research project in the Netherlands. The project is searching for early precursors for dyslexia and follows a group of children who are genetically at risk for dyslexia and a control group during the first 10 years of their lives. Among other measures, the Dutch version of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences (N-CDI) is used to investigate early vocabulary development. In this article, the first N-CDI results from the 2 groups of
