Recent studies suggest that speech, solid feeding, and sleep difficulties may be linked to restricted tongue function. Children with tongue restrictions and speech, feeding, and sleep issues underwent lingual frenectomies with a CO2 laser, paired with myofunctional exercises. Questionnaires were completed before, 1 week after, and 1 month following treatment. Thirty-seven patients participated in the study (mean age 4.2 years [range 13 months to 12 years]). Overall, speech improved in 89%, solid feeding improved in 83%, and sleep improved in 83% of patients as reported by parents. Fifty percen

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess unilateral posterior crossbite, sucking habits, orofacial functions, and otolaryngological findings in the deciduous dentition. These findings would allow us to establish a preventive program for posterior crossbite, based on interceptive treatment at an early stage of dental development. We would determine the predictive value for posterior crossbite development in correlation with the duration of sucking habits.
METHODS: Data were collected on 30 children (13 boys, 17 girls) with unilateral posterior crossbite (mean age, 5.5 years; range, 3.

Craniofacial defects involving the lip and/or palate are among the most common human birth defects. X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia results from loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding the T-box transcription factor TBX22. Further studies show that TBX22 mutations are also found in around 5% of non-syndromic cleft palate patients. Although palate defects are obvious at birth, the underlying developmental pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we report a Tbx22(null) mouse, which has a submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and ankyloglossia, similar to the human phenotype, with a small min

Cleft palate with ankyloglossia (CPX; MIM 303400) is inherited as a Mendelian, semidominant X-linked disorder and has been described in several large families from different ethnic origins. It is a useful genetic model for non-syndromic cleft palate, a common congenital disorder. Recently, the underlying genetic defect in CPX was identified, where unique mutations were found in the T-box-containing transcription factor TBX22. Here we report two new familial cases with novel missense and insertion mutations, each occurring within the T-box domain and highlighting the functional significance of

Moebius syndrome is a congenital, nonprogressive disorder clinically characterized by loss of facial expression, impaired stomatognathic system functions, incapacity to close the eyelids, and several oral impairments. The purpose of this paper was to present the clinical manifestations and the dental treatment in a 5-year, 2-month-old male Moebius syndrome patient. The child presented with facial asymmetry, difficulty performing facial mimic movements and pronouncing some letters, and compromised suction, mastication, breathing, and deglutition. An intraoral examination revealed hypofunction o

AIM: Bad habits result in altered functions which with time can cause anomalies of the orofacial morphology. To solve these problems, orthodontic treatment can be supported by myofunctional therapy in order to recover the normal functionality of the oral muscles. The aim of this study is to assess the need to treat patients with neuromuscular disorders, from both the occlusion and the muscles condition approach in order to obtain the balance needed for the stability of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 23 patients with atypical swallowing was included in this study, some of them p

T-box genes constitute a conserved gene family with important roles in many developmental processes. Several family members have been implicated in human congenital diseases. Recently, mutations in TBX22 were found to cause X-linked cleft palate (CPX and ankyloglossia), a semidominant X-linked disorder affecting formation of the secondary palate. Here, we have cloned the chick ortholog of human TBX22 and have analyzed its expression during embryogenesis. Expression is very prominent in the somites and in the myotome, and in the mandible and maxilla of the developing jaw. Other sites of express
