Intake of marine-based n-3 fatty acids (EPA, docosapentaenoic acid and DHA) is recommended to prevent CHD. Stearidonic acid (SDA), a plant-based n-3 fatty acid, is a precursor of EPA and may be more readily converted to EPA than a-linolenic acid (ALA). While transgenic soyabeans might supply SDA at low cost, it is unclear whether SDA is associated with CHD risk. Furthermore, associations of other n-3 fatty acids with CHD risk remain inconsistent. The present ancillary study examined the association of erythrocyte SDA as well as other n-3 fatty acids with the risk of CHD. In a prospective neste

High-fat diets have been associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, and the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been reported to vary based on the length of PUFAs. We explored the association between dietary omega-6 and omega-3 PUFAs intake and CRC. We analyzed 865 CRC patients and 3206 controls from a case-control study of Iran (IROPICAN study). We used multivariate logistic regression models to calculate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between PUFAs intake and CRC risk. Our results showed that gamma-linolenic acid (18:3 n-6, GLA), ara

BACKGROUND: The understanding of bile acid (BA) and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) profiles, as well as their dysregulation, remains elusive in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) coexisting with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Investigating these metabolites could offer valuable insights into the pathophy-siology of NAFLD in T2DM.
AIM: To identify potential metabolite biomarkers capable of distinguishing between NAFLD and T2DM.
METHODS: A training model was developed involving 399 participants, comprising 113 healthy controls (HCs), 134 individuals with T2DM without NA

'Nanguo' pear (Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim.) is a typical climacteric fruit with an attractive aroma after postharvest ripening. Esters are the key volatile compounds determining the typical aroma formation. However, the mechanism of aroma-related ester formation remains largely unknown. In this study, we performed transcriptome and metabolome analyses to reveal the changes of aroma-related compounds during pear ripening in the optimal taste period (OTP). During the pear ripening process, typical fatty acid-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are transformed from aldehydes, alcohols, and ket

The hydroxylation and epoxidation of lipids rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are significant processes that cannot be overlooked. In this study, the concentrations of non-volatile and volatile compounds derived from lipid oxidation significantly increased during storage of salted large yellow croaker. In which epoxy-fatty acids demonstrated greater stability and steadily accumulated throughout the entire process. The precursors for non-volatile lipid oxidation secondary products included linoleic acid, α-linolenic acid, arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic ac

To investigate the main aroma-active volatiles out from comprehensive chemical profile, we proposed an aroma correlation assisted volatilome coupled network analysis strategy and applied it to the study of Rosa roxburghii. Based on 475 detected volatiles with GC × GC-TOF/MS analysis, the volatilome was screened with both positive aroma activities and high contents to discover some aliphatic acids, alcohols, aldehydes and esters, terpenoids as well as some alkenes and ketones. Especially, a series of homologous C6- and C8- acids, alcohols, aldehydes, esters as well as some terpenoids like limon

Theobroma speciosum, known as "cacauí" in Brazil, is considered a prominent unconventional food plant. The objective of this work was to evaluate the chemical profiles, antioxidant capacity and minerals of the aqueous extract and fractions from its flowers. The identified compounds were sugars, organic acids and phenolics compounds such as citric, malic and protocatechuic acids, quercetin, quercetin pentoside and quercetin-3-O-glucoside. The extract was rich in phenolic compounds (640 mg GAE g-1). Furthermore, fractions also presented phenolic compounds from 170.7 to 560.7 mg GAE g-1 (mainly p

Mammalian cell viability is dependent on the supply of the essential fatty acids (EFAs) linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid. EFAs are converted into omega3- and omega6-polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are essential constituents of membrane phospholipids and precursors of eicosanoids, anandamide and docosanoids. Whether EFAs, PUFAs and eicosanoids are essential for cell viability has remained elusive. Here, we show that deletion of delta6-fatty acid desaturase (FADS2) gene expression in the mouse abolishes the initial step in the enzymatic cascade of PUFA synthesis. The lack of PUFAs an

Dietary n-3 fatty acids generally attenuate elevated cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels in disease states. However, models of renal cystic disease (RCD) exhibit reduced renal COX-2 expression. Therefore, the in vivo regulation of COX-2 expression by dietary n-3 fatty acids was examined. In archived tissues from dietary studies, COX-2 protein and gene expression was up-regulated in diseased pcy mouse and Han:SPRD-cy rat kidneys when given diets containing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and/or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), but not those containing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), compared to control diets wi

Animal biosynthesis of high polyunsaturated fatty acids from linoleic, alpha-linolenic and oleic acids is mainly modulated by the delta6 and delta5 desaturases through dietary and hormonal stimulated mechanisms. From hormones, only insulin activates both enzymes. In experimental diabetes mellitus type-1, the depressed delta6 desaturase is restored by insulin stimulation of the gene expression of its mRNA. However, cAMP or cycloheximide injection prevents this effect. The depression of delta6 and delta5 desaturases in diabetes is rapidly correlated by lower contents of arachidonic acid and high

Continuous inhalation of perchloroethylene (PCE) (320 ppm) for 3 months by Mongolian gerbils resulted in an altered fatty acid pattern of a brain phospholipid. A minor decrease in the brain weight was also observed. In ethanolamine phosphoglyceride of the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, a decrease was found among the minor fatty acids derived from linolenic acid with a corresponding increase in several fatty acids of the linoleic acid family. Linoleic acid itself was decreased. Stearic acid was also decreased in both the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus. These changes in the fatty acid

Alterations in lipid metabolism may play a role in the vascular pathology associated with hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). Homocysteine is linked to lipid metabolism through the methionine cycle and the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine (PC) by phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) methyltransferase, which is responsible for the synthesis of 20-40% of liver PC. The goal of the present study was to determine if the reduced methylation capacity in HHcy is associated with alterations in liver phospholipid and fatty acid metabolism. Mice heterozygous for disruption of cystathionine beta-synthase (Cbs+/-) fed a

Whether circulating fatty acids (FAs) play a causal role in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclear. We conducted a Mendelian randomisation study to explore the associations between plasma phospholipid FA levels and 15 CVDs. Summary-level data from the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D, MEGASTROKE, and Atrial Fibrillation consortia and UK Biobank were used. Sixteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with ten plasma FAs were used as instrumental variables. SNPs in or close to the FADS1 gene were associated with most FAs. We performed a secondary analysis of the associatio

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Salvia officinalis has been used as a traditional remedy against diabetes in many countries and its glucose-lowering effects have been demonstrated in animal studies. The active compounds and their possible mode of action are still unknown although it has been suggested that diterpenes may be responsible for the anti-diabetic effect of Salvia officinalis.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate whether the reported anti-diabetic effects of Salvia officinalis are related to activation of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ and to ide

The study investigated the impact of three processes-curd-butter (CD), cream-butter (CM) and fermented cream-butter (FC) on fatty acid composition and volatile profiles of clarified butter (ghee) obtained from two cow breeds, Deoni (DN) and Holstein Friesian (HF). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identified 26 fatty acids in ghee. There was no difference in fatty acid composition due to processing. Significant differences were observed by breed, with HF ghee exhibiting higher polyunsaturated fatty acids and α-linolenic acid than DN ghee. Headspace GC-MS detected 57 volatile compoun

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; EC 3.1.1.8), a serine hydrolase found in various tissues, hydrolyses choline esters such as acetylcholine and succinylcholine, as well as other esters such as heroin and acetylsalicylic acid. It is considered to play a role in lipid metabolism as it belongs to the same enzyme group as lipases and its catalytic subunits are similar. In this study, the effects of unsaturated fatty acids, namely arachidonic (AA), linoleic (LA), alpha-linolenic (ALA) and oleic acid (OA), on equine serum BChE (EqBChE) were investigated. Enzyme activity was measured by the modified Ellma
